  • Two Days in Vienna
Belgian OSCE Chairmanship The Number 122 COURIER Newsletter of the OSCE Mission to Croatia July/August 2006 Two days in Vienna ienna is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe. It has become the real centre of the continent and this is most evident since the end of the Cold War and the enlargement of the VEuropean Union. The Viennese are elegant, its buildings imposing, the food delicious and art ever-present. But the perspective of the city for the OSCE Head of Mission, who goes there for a couple of days and during which has four working luncheons and dinners, no less than five official presentations and numerous bilateral conversations, resembles the torture of Tantalus. On 14 - 15 June, I went through such an ordeal. It made me hope that next time things would be better and that I’ll be able to go to the opera, have a quiet dinner with my wife, or simply walk through the distinguished streets surrounding St Stephen’s Cathedral. Certainly, I will be able to do this during my holidays because it is Press conference on Mid-Term Review at MHQ, 13 June, 2006. becoming increasingly clear that to report to the OSCE Permanent Council once or twice a year is all work and no lead to the Mission closing four of its six units in 2007. fun. Over all, however, I cannot complain. Ambassador Eventually, a solution will be found for the remaining Sanchez de Boado, the head of the Spanish delegation two units dealing with the return and integration of to the OSCE, and his charming family welcomed us in refugees and monitoring of war crimes.

  • Methods of Multivariate Analysis to Uncover Socio-Economic Differences Among Spatial-Economics Entities
METHODS OF MULTIVARIATE ANALYSIS TO UNCOVER SOCIO-ECONOMIC DIFFERENCES AMONG SPATIAL-ECONOMICS ENTITIES Paper prepared for the 45th Congress of the European Regional Science Association Volos, Greece, August 30th-Semptember 3rd, 2006 Ivana Rasic Bakaric Institute of Economics Zagreb Trg. J. F. Kennedya 7, 10000 Zagreb, Croatia [email protected] Abstract Main aim of regional policy is to reduce regional disparities. There is now doubt that action to tackle regional disparities is needed in Croatia. Main problem is the definition of region as a subject of regional policy. After discussion about definition of region and main criteria which should be considered during the process of establishment of regions, the paper will present one of the methodologies for spatial-economic entities' classification. The methodology will be used on the working sample of several Croatian counties. The classification will be obtained through use of multivariate statistical methods, and it is based on a wide number of demographic, economic, educations, employment indicators. Results leads to the identification of several axes of socio- economic characterisation, and the division of the observed territory into several homogenous clusters, regions with different degree of development. The main conclusion is that socio-economic reorients uncovered with this methodology provide useful characterisation and division of the territory, for policy making purpose. JEL Classification: C49, R12, R58 Keywords: homogeneous regions, factor and cluster analysis, regional policy 1 Introduction A precondition to formulating implementing and monitoring of regional policy measures is the existence of established regional boundaries. Division proposals depend on criteria used. Politicians and various professions use different criteria, in order to achieve the optimal territorial structure that could enable same or at least similar effects of certain policy measures within the same territorial unit, and could be easily monitored.

Chapter 3 Rural tourism in the surroundings of Krka National Park: factors of development and spatial impacts Petra Radeljak Kaufmann Abstract This chapter focuses on the development of rural tourism in the area surrounding Krka National Park, situated in northern Dalmatia. Via various functions, especially tourism and recrea- tion, protected areas can influence local development. Since the 1960s, settlements in the surroundings of Krka National Park have faced challenges related to depopulation and socio-econom- ic development. The goal of this chapter is to analyse factors of re- cent intense development of rural tourism, its spatial impacts in the immediate vicinity of the Park, and various potentials for fur- ther development. These trends should be looked at in the frame- work of tourism development of the Park itself, as well as tour- ism development trends in the interior of Dalmatia. A case study of the Town of Drniš was conducted to closely examine recent trends and the potential for development of rural tourism in the near future. Key words: rural tourism, protected areas, geography, Krka National Park, Drniš, Dalmatia, Croatia doi: https://doi.org/10.26493/978-961-7055-08-5.53-73 53 challenges of tourism development in protected areas of croatia and slovenia Introduction National parks are defined by theNature Protection Act (Official Gazette 80/13, 15/18, 14/19) as a predominantly unaltered area of exceptional and varied natural values encompassing one or more ecosystems. This cate- gory of protected area is primarily intended to protect nature and land- scapes and to serve scientific, cultural, educational, and recreational pur- poses.

NEWSLETTER Zagreb l Smičiklasova 21 doi: 10.3326/nle.2017.112 [email protected] l www.ijf.hr l tel: +385(0)1 4886 444 No. 112 l July 2017 l ISSN 1848-4662 Budget transparency in Croatian counties, cities and municipalities (November 2016-March 2017)1 KATARINA OTT, MIHAELA BRONIĆ, MIROSLAV PETRUŠIĆ, BRANKO STANIĆ The overall average level of budget transparency in Croatian local government units, measured by the number of budget documents published on their respective official websites, has improved year by year. In the current research cycle, it averages 3.1 (the maximum rank is 5), with counties already being very transparent (4.6 on average), cities fairly good (3.7 on average), but municipalities still inadequately transparent (2.8 on average). Despite the relatively solid averages, there are too many extremely non-transparent local government units. Four cities (Gospić, Imotski, Valpovo and Vrgorac) and as many as 39 municipalities have not published a single budget document that we were searching for, and another seven cities and 50 municipalities have published only one such document each. As in previous years, the most transparent local government units include very sparsely populated ones, such as Ribnik and Dekanovec, and local government units with low per capita income (e.g. Jarmina and Đelekovec). On the other hand, among the least transparent local government units there are units with very high total and per capita budget revenues (e.g. Sutivan, Šolta, Dugopolje and Bol). Detailed results for all counties, cities and municipalities are given later in the text and are also available on the interactive map and in the Excel table.

Geoadria Vol. 10 No. 1 69-89 Zadar, 2005. DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT OF THE TOWN OF KNIN IN 1991/2001 INTERCENSAL PERIOD MARTIN GLAMUZINA UDC: 911.3:314.8](497.5 Knin) "1991/2001" ŽELJKA ŠILJKOVIĆ Professional paper NIKOLA GLAMUZINA Stručni članak Department of Geography, University of Zadar Odjel za geografiju, Sveučilište u Zadru Received: 2005-05-10 Primljeno: The Town of Knin, as many other war-affected areas in Croatia, has experienced significant demographic, socio-economic and political changes. The most prominent changes include notable reduction in the number of inhabitants and altered population structures. Ethnic composition has changed significantly in comparison to prewar period, partly due to immigration of Croats from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Ključne riječi: Grad Knin, dobna struktura, narodnosna struktura, migracije, gospodarstvo Introduction In the last decade of the 20th century, Croatia experienced many social and political changes, which severely affected the demographic situation, especially in war- affected areas. The war has triggered many demographic disturbances at the Croatian state territory, but also at the wider Croatian ethnic territory (NEJAŠMIĆ, ŠTAMBUK, 2003). The situation is particularly difficult in the areas that were directly affected by the war (ŠTERC, POKOS, 1993).

Human Dimensions in Wolf Management in Croatia Understanding attitudes and beliefs of residents in Gorski kotar, Lika and Dalmatia toward wolves and wolf management Report produced by: Dr. Alistair Bath, Memorial University of Newfoundland, Department of Geography, St. John’s, Nfld, Canada. A1B 3X9 Aleksandra Majić, Site Project Coordinator, Kranjčevićeva 28, 43500 Daruvar, Croatia Support provided by: Ministry of Environmental Ministry of Agriculture Protection and Zoning and Forestry Ministry of Tourism Executive Summary Human Dimensions in Wolf Management in Croatia: Understanding attitudes and beliefs of residents in Gorski kotar, Lika and Dalmatia toward wolves and wolf management Understanding and addressing wolf management in Croatia requires the cooperation and involvement of many interest groups. Understanding the attitudes and beliefs of these groups and the general public who live in Croatia wolf range will help in making more effective decisions regarding wolf management and will ensure easier implementation of wolf management plans. This report examines public attitudes toward and beliefs about wolves and wolf management across three defined zones (Gorski kotar, Lika, and Dalmatia) that lie in Croatian wolf range. This report presents the results that address overall attitudes toward wolves, attitudes toward hunting wolves and other management options, attitudes toward wolf-livestock conflicts, beliefs about wolves and their impacts, public knowledge about wolf biology, the nature of conflicts, personal experience with wolves, and socio-demographic characteristics. The overall purpose of this study is to establish a baseline assessment of general public, hunter, foresters, and student attitudes toward and beliefs about wolves, and to build cooperation between interest groups so to better manage wolves in Croatia.
