THE POET AS A HORSE Conversation with Gabriel Rosenstock by Dr Mícheal Ó hAodha How and when did you get started as a writer? When did you know that you wanted to be a writer? One of my favourite poets, Ko Un from Korea, talks about the time he was a horse. Way back. I think his first human manifestation was as an innkeeper. I got started as a writer centuries ago. When asked for whom do I write, I usually say: For generations long gone. Now, that’s getting back to one’s roots! (That’s what the word ‘radical’ means). And even further back. To the Self. As a sincere advocate of Advaita, or the Nondualistic approach to the mystery of life, I can say with firm conviction that the Self has no beginning and therefore no end. So, when you ask about beginnings you are asking about something that doesn’t exist. It exists, of course, for the ego-bound and year in year out they celebrate this myth with the false mantra, Happy Birthday. Why do you write? What inspires you to write? Why do you care about writing? There are no ‘whys’ either. Why did the chicken cross the road? There are a million answers to that question. I’m not sure if the chicken herself really knew. Why? No purpose. No agenda. It’s all about expanding awareness and expanding joy. It’s all about encountering the world of illusion, memory and desire and ridding oneself of illusion, memory and desire. This is commonplace among the wisdom-writings of China, India and other parts of the world. -

HAIKU IN IRELAND Anatoly Kudryavitsky Originally nature-oriented Japanese short-form poetry that thrived in the 17th century, haiku has recently experienced colossal growth in popularity in the English language. Seamus Heaney stated in The Guardian of 24 November 2007 that since the times of the imagists “the haiku form and the generally Japanese effect have been a constant feature of poetry in English. The names of Basho and Issa and Buson have found their way into our discourse to the extent that we in Ireland have learnt to recognise something Japanese in the earliest lyrics of the native tradition.” In Ireland, the country with the beautiful landscape, most people are in touch with nature throughout their lives even if they don’t live in a rural area. The way of living may account for the fact that the Irish people have a long tradition of appreciation of poetry and respect for poets. However the history of haiku on this island goes back only a few decades, so the development of the genre started relatively late. The first Irish poet to write haiku as we know them was Juanita Casey. A travelling woman born in England of Irish parents, she spent a significant part of her life in Co. Galway. She started composing haiku in late 1960s, and a few of them appeared in her 1968 collection Horse by the River (1968), followed by a few more that found their way to her 1985 collection, Eternity Smith. Just one example: The pickers have left one plum . hey, wind Around 1969 - 1970, Patrick Kavanagh wrote a single haiku, evidently not even suspecting that it was a haiku — and a worthy one! This piece appeared in The Lace Curtain magazine in 1971. -

Theatrical Role of Interpreter As a Mediator Between Audience and Stage
Essay JAITS Theatrical Role of Interpreter as a Mediator between Audience and Stage TAKEBE Yoshiko (Shujitsu University) This essay examines the dramatic effectiveness of an interpreter, based on the writer’s own experience as an interpreter in the theatre. An Irish theatrical company called ‘Mouth on Fire’ performed several later plays of Samuel Beckett (1906-1989) in English at Theatre X in Tokyo between 13 February and 17 February, 2013. First, I will focus on the theatrical role of consecutive interpreting presented as an introductory talk before the performances. I will then investigate the mechanism of liaison interpreting offered for the post-performance discussion at the meeting between the audience and the company to understand the ‘invisible role’ of both interpreter and characters in Beckett’s plays. Finally, I will analyze the theatrical role of the interpreter for bridging the gap between audience and stage as well as between the unseen and the seen. Introduction Franz Pöchhacker describes the role of interpreters expected by the audience as “the ghost role of the interpreter over the ‘intruder role,’ but would at the same time give interpreters license to ‘correct the speaker’ and ‘add his own explanations’” (Pöchhacker, 2004, p.149). This contradiction will be further analyzed in this essay. The first section focuses on a discussion of the ‘doppelgänger’ to clarify the co-existence of two different languages in the theatre as well as duplicate characters in Beckett’s plays. The second section reinforces the discussion of ‘alter ego’ through both conceptual and theatrical performances of liaison interpreting. Thus, this essay scrutinizes how the interpreter in the theatre in the particular context of Beckett’s drama reveals his/her affinity to the characters to highlight the importance of the theatrical effect of the interpreter as a mediator between audience and stage.
