SIMMONS GALLERY PO BOX 104, LEYTONSTONE, LONDON E11 1ND, UK TEL: 020 8989 8097 (International + 44 20 8989 8097) Email [email protected] (no fax) Illustrated online catalogue at www.simmonsgallery.co.uk MAILBID MB94 Bid Auction of Tokens The collection of Welsh Tokens formed by Emyr George including his Shropshire Tavern Tokens Closing date for bids Wednesday 30 September 2020 at 12 noon BST Tokens, checks and passes 18th century tokens, 19th century silver and copper tokens Pub & refreshment checks, industry checks, Mining and colliery checks, political & working men’s clubs, and other tokens from UK and beyond. Online viewing www.simmonsgallery.co.uk or by appointment Buyer’s premium 5% including VAT at standard rate on all lots Preamble Emyr George was a dairy farmer from Wales, a collector of all things Welsh, amiable and passionate about his hobby. He co-wrote Shropshire Tavern Tokens with Neil Todd and Andrew Cunningham. Emyr was a great one for swapping his tokens with others, buying lots, and then exchanging them for tokens he needed for his collection. This is why we find stray English, Scottish and occasional overseas tokens scattered amongst the Welsh. We tried in our last auction in June to separate these non-Welsh out but there are thousands of tokens and it will take us several sales to offer them all. So we’re only up to Glamorgan in the pub checks and up to C in the mining alphabetically. There’s lots more to come and Howard used lockdown well to catalogue them. We’re selling on behalf of the family so please, to those who’ve already asked, all tokens are offered at auction. Changes in the way we all work and updated technology mean that we have made a new Simmons Gallery website for the auctions and for direct sales. The other thing is that we are getting older (like everyone else) and are trying to streamline the business so Frances doesn’t have such a huge admin workload in the future and we can continue for a while longer. If you haven’t given us your email address yet, please do so in order that we can continue to let you know what’s happening and when. All bidding will be done online and you will need to register to bid and give yourself a user name (this is masked with first and last characters only shown). If you do not have access to the internet, we can bid on your behalf as long as we receive instructions at least the day before, so you won’t lose out with the new system (see note re. Frances and admin above). Do use the key word and category search facility online once that is live - there are crossovers between the categories especially on place names and themes; you may miss things otherwise. There are a few changes, principally in the step increments for bidding. In the future bids will increase in the following way: £1-£20 £1 increments £20-£40 £2 increments £40-£100 £5 increments £100 onwards £10 increments. The auction uses proxy bidding so that you only see the current winning bid, not someone’s maximum bid (think eBay). There won’t be tied bids in the future - if someone else has bid your maximum before you, they win unless we have your instruction to increase your bid by a set number of increments e.g. 1 or 2. There’s no third party sniping facility but of course you can bid up to (almost) the closing time online. Although we’re testing the auction system, there is a Plan B in case of glitches when we go live. Ever cautious. But please be patient! And wait for the invoice once the auction is over please. The buyer’s premium remains at 5%. The price online is the reserve if no bids registered. We reckon this is roughly half estimated price but loads of these tokens are seriously rare and known from only 1 or 2 examples. We’re grateful for the assistance of certain collectors for their expertise. The Welsh pub checks follow the Cox brothers work: Pub Checks of Wales 2005. Other Welsh tokens can be found in Cox Tokens, Checks, Metallic tickets, passes and tallies of Wales 1800-1993. Those tokens starting with numbers over 2000 are from volume 2, (2012) and many of these recorded examples belong to Emyr. The majority of tokens in this listing are very modestly priced and you may need to be brave if you really want a certain token. Emyr sometimes paid into three figures for some of these. So bid high, and bid early please! All best wishes from us both in these strange times Howard and Frances Simmons, Simmons Gallery Ltd Terms & Conditions of Sale General terms: All items are guaranteed genuine as described.
