Last week on American Top 40, Whitney Houston leaped to the top of the Official Billboard Chart for her second number one song with "HOW WILL I KNOW". And coming up behind Whitney are "WHEN THE GOING GETS TOUGH" by Biily Ocean number two -- and "KYRIE" by Mister Mister at Number four. Who's going to be number one this week? We'll find out when we count 'em down, on American Top 40. 2) THE NEWCOMERS MAKE THEIR MOVES (:32) Hi, this is Casey Kasem. Some newcomers are lined up to debut this week on American Top 40. From Los Angeles, there's the four-woman band, The Bangles, with "MANIC MONDAY". From New Jersey, there's the solo singer Robert Tepper with "NO EASY WAY OUT". And from Kentucky, there's the woman we heard singing "SEPARATE LIVES", the number one smash duet with Phil Collins. She's Marilyn Martin, with her first solo hit, "NIGHT MOVES". We'll report on the new comers, the established stars and all the Official Billboard Chart action on American Top 40. 3) ROCKUM 1 SOCKUM, "ROCKY" ROCKS ' EM ( : 2 7) This is Casey Kasem. The soundtrack album from the hit movie, "Rocky Four" has already generated two hits that are now in the countdown: "BURNING HEART" by Survivor and "LIVING IN AMERICA" by James Brown. But the "Rocky Four" soundtrack wants more action. Newcomer Robert Tepper just might punch his way into the Top 40 with "NO EASY WAY OUT", the third hit single from Sylvester Stallone's movie. We'll have a ringside seat for the Official Billboard bout - on American Top 40! CThe Country Radio Hall of Famer captains his own Country Top 40 and boasts a storied career littered with accolades and awards. But the idea of a national country countdown show was anything but a no-brainer when he started with American Country Countdown in 1974. And an abrupt end to his 30-year run on the show was a game-changer. Those challenges, his ap- proach to interviewing and the big surprise that left him, literally, speechless are discussed in this wide-ranging conversation. Country Aircheck: What were you doing when you were asked to join American Country Countdown and who talked to you? Did Casey Kasem call you himself? Bob Kingsley: No. I was there quite awhile before Casey realized who I was or what I was doing.

  • 1 Voicing Passion the Emotional Economy of Songwriting by Prof
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by BCU Open Access Voicing Passion The Emotional Economy of Songwriting By Prof. Paul Long and Dr. Simon Barber Abstract This article examines articulations of the role of passion in accounts of the life and work of the songwriter. It draws upon a range of interviews with successful artists captured in the Sodajerker On Songwriting podcast. It is suggested that these interviews capture the ‘voicing’ (Toynbee, 2003) of the conventions of creativity in popular music, exploring a context in which passionate motivation, expression and understanding of the (potentially) affective responses to songs are paramount to the labour of the songwriter. The article explores how the core of this labour deals in emotion, attempting to articulate feelings in recognizable, tradable form. This is a process that is both instrumentally rationalized but often felt to be a deeply authentic process, understood (and believed) to spring from the individual’s emotional experience, so conferring identity in a generic field. In light of current debates about the nature of creative work and emotional labour, the accounts drawn upon here can be seen to epitomise many of the qualities of what constitutes ‘good work’ through a mode of self-actualisation. Keywords: songwriting; songwriter; music industries; passion; creativity; voicing; affect; emotional labour. 1 Introduction A normative and perhaps dominant characteristic of how music is framed is in terms of its emotional qualities and the affective responses it elicits (Hunter and Schellenberg, 2010; Juslin and Sloboda, 2011). Emotion is understood to be a quality of the sound and shape of music itself, while passionate responses and attachments determine the conditions of its consumption in terms of meaning, assessment and taste as well as the acquisition of artefacts in the form of recordings and associated ephemera.
