Ashford Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, MA 02139, USA Introduction The purposes of this chapter is to delve more deeply into the processes and determinants of technological, organisational, and social innovation and to discuss their implications for selecting instruments and policies to stimulate the kinds of innovation necessary for the transformation of industrial societies into sustainable ones. Sustainable development must be seen as a broad concept, incorporating concerns for the economy, the environment, and employment. All three are driven/affected by both technological innovation [Schumpeter, 1939] and globalised trade [Ekins et al., 1994; Diwan et al., 1997]. They are also in a fragile balance, are inter-related, and need to be addressed together in a coherent and mutually reinforcing way [Ashford, 2001]. Here we will argue for the attainment of ‘triple sustainability’ – improvements in competitiveness (or productiveness) and long-term dynamic efficiency, social cohesion (work/employment), and environment (including resource productivity, environmental pollution, and climate disruption)1. The figure below depicts the salient features and determinates of sustainability. They are, in turn, influenced by both public and private-sector initiatives and policies. Page 1/30 Abstract Ambio is a leading journal in environmental science and policy, sustainable development and human- environment interactions. The paper at hand aims to run a bibliometric analysis to inspect the main publications features of Ambio in Science Citation Index Expanded SCI-EXPANDED. For this scope, a bibliometric survey has been carried out to investigate the journal’s historic characteristics in the Web of Science (WoS) categories of environmental sciences and environmental engineering for Ambio from 1980 to 2019. These are the categories for which the journal has been indexed throughout the indexed time frame. The paper proposes technical and methodological innovations, including improvements in the methods and original characteristics analyzed. Documents published in Ambio were searched out from SCI-EXPANDED. Six publication indicators were applied to evaluate the publication performance of countries, institutes and authors. -

Learning objectives Mission Statement: Understand how humans are reshaping the processes of nature in the Anthropocene, articulate the repercussions of those changes for ecology and evolution, use global change datasets to answer biological questions, and be able to evaluate solutions that might mitigate the consequences. By the end of this course, you will be able to: • Describe the myriad of ways humans are altering earth’s atmosphere, land, and water. • Understand how global change is fundamentally altering the way species interact with their environments. • Apply concepts and theory of ecology and evolution to case studies detailing the effects of global change on species, species interactions, and carbon and nutrient cycling. • Understand, summarize, and critically evaluate primary scientific literature on global change biology including how scientists use gradients, experiments, and models to investigate global change. • Develop and answer scientific questions by using R to access, organize, and graph actual data sets. • Articulate the pros and cons of potential solutions to global change issues and to be able to defend your position on potential solutions. Course description We are currently living in the Anthropocene era where humans are having an outsize effect on the Earth’s environment through the burning of fossil fuels, the large-scale conversion of land for agriculture, the modification of water courses for flood control and energy, and the use of fertilizers, to name a few. -

It aims to fill a niche in the community for papers on any general topic in astronomy that may not find their place in top tier astronomical journals. The article outlines the thinking behind why there is a gap to be filled with regards to current scholarly metrics and the nature of other journals of similar scope and impact. The Journal Coverage of Web of Science and Scopus: a Comparative Analysis Philippe Mongeon and Adèle Paul-Hus [email protected]; [email protected] Université de Montréal, École de bibliothéconomie et des sciences de l'information, C.P. 6128, Succ. Centre-Ville, H3C 3J7 Montréal, Qc, Canada Abstract Bibliometric methods are used in multiple fields for a variety of purposes, namely for research evaluation. Most bibliometric analyses have in common their data sources: Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science (WoS) and Elsevier’s Scopus. This research compares the journal coverage of both databases in terms of fields, countries and languages, using Ulrich’s extensive periodical directory as a base for comparison. Results indicate that the use of either WoS or Scopus for research evaluation may introduce biases that favor Natural Sciences and Engineering as well as Biomedical Research to the detriment of Social Sciences and Arts and Humanities. Similarly, English-language journals are overrepresented to the detriment of other languages. While both databases share these biases, their coverage differs substantially. As a consequence, the results of bibliometric analyses may vary depending on the database used. ABSTRACT Approximately 350 English-language journals in the interdisciplinary field of marine science are published. Two groups, one of fity titles, and one of fourteen are analyzed for price increases between 1997 and 2003.
