Fremantle Roosters v Rockingham Sharks The 2017 NRL WA Smarter than Smoking Premiership is in the final week, and we are down to two. The Roosters are back in the big dance, and will look to emulate their 2015 victory over the South Perth Lions. Boasting experienced players such as Delane Edwards, Bjorn Crotty, Brad Gibson, Jarrod Thompson, the most impressive thing about them this year has been the form of their younger players, particularly Simon Tabakanaca and Taiapa Graham. The same can be said for their opponents this weekend. The Sharks have the experience of Reece Potter, Anthony Bowman mixed with the youth of Tyler Hunt, Josh Bransby and Brandon Wright. Both sides have done a great job managing the expectations on their rookies, but the cauldron that will be Dorrien Gardens will be a different beast this weekend. Last week, we saw Bransby, Hunt and Wright stand up when needed, and they are a big reason as to why the Sharks are in the Grand Final. Fantastic perfor- mances from all three will have coach Darren Shaw hoping they can replicate it all again this week. Player/Coach Delane Edwards will be looking for a fast start this weekend, similar to what they did to the Roosters in the Major Semi Final a cou- ple of weeks ago. The Roosters will take a massive amount of confidence from that game, knowing they have what it takes to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Will this give them the psychological edge this weekend? Let’s wait and see. After winning the Minor Premiership, anything less than a victory on Saturday will be seen as a missed opportunity for the Sharks. With that being said, the team they have struggled against most this season is the one they have to overcome. Having met 4 times in 2017, the Roosters have a 3-1 record. This will count for little unless they can get the job done in this seasons NRL WA – Smarter Thank Smoking Premiership Grand Final.

Best of luck to both teams. Premiership Grand Final Match Preview Player match up’s

How do we split the teams? Let’s look at the key match ups that will go a long way to deciding the outcome of this one. Delane Edwards v Anthony Bowman - Both very similar, yet very, very different at the same time. For the Roosters, Delane can make something out of nothing, he can be calm and collected, or he can be fiery and aggressive. All these attributes have made him such a great play- er over his career. With a great running game, he will test the defence this week- end and look to create multiple opportunities for his outside players. On the other hand, what you see is what you get with Bowman. A tough competi- tor, who will never take a backward step. Equally effective in the halves or at back row, he will make his tackles and stick to a game plan. Coming off arguably his best performance for the Sharks in the Preliminary Final, a similar display will be important to the Sharks chances this weekend. Brad Gibson v Reece Potter - Without a doubt, one of the toughest players in the NRL WA, Brad Gibson will once again be the influential leader for the Roosters this weekend. You could go as far to say that when ‘Gibbo’ plays well, the Roosters win. That is how im- portant he is to his team’s chances. Reece Potter is the Sharks ‘Club Captain’, and rightly so. He epitomises exactly what the Sharks are building their club culture around – Hard Work, Honesty and Mateship. Potter will go all day, and will hope his team will follow his lead. Taiapa Graham v Geordie Connolly - This battle will be worth the price of admission alone. Both players represented the WA State Team this year, and both will want bragging rights. Taiapa Graham has been outstanding this year. After moving from the Lions at the end of last season, he has made a home for himself on the right edge for the Roosters. power, speed, confidence are all key attributes of Taiapa’s game, and he will be wanting to show them off this weekend. Geordie Connolly was mentioned by many when the ‘Ken Allen Medal’ debate begun. New to WA this year, Connolly took little time to settle in at the Sharks, and has been one of their most con- sistent all season. A beautiful shimmy, and a great right arm fend, he can finish off back-line plays, or set something up for his winger out of nothing. A classy centre, Connolly will be a handful for his counterpart this weekend.

Premiership Coach

Delane Edwards - Fremantle Roosters

Fremantle’s favorite son, this player and coach has gone to another level this year. His late footwork and natural strength is what most players dream of and the more Delane touches the ball, the better the Roosters go.

Since stepping up as coach back in 2015 he knew being a player and a coach would never be easy, however his incredible ability to think deeply and tactfully is certainly what’s helped the team get to the 2017 Grand Final. Delane Edwards is a very elusive runner of the ball who has the ability to produce something from nothing. He possesses the power, agility, skill and strength to be the complete footballer. His presence on the field whether he is attacking or defending commands respect. His coaching and guidance of players stretches to all levels of play, starting with the young up & coming to the more veteran team members and Delane’s positive energy and conduct has been nothing short of influ- ential to these players. His knowledge and experience of the game, mixed with his exceptional leadership qualities on and off the field, Delane has conditioned the roost- ers. Their consistency this season means their systems are in place and their spine is finally set to explode into the free-flowing style that we all love to watch. Premiership Coach

Darren Shaw - Rockingham Sharks

Darren is a former Queensland Ipswich Junior Player who also had a season with the North Beach Club in 1991 before returning to QLD then heading to the UK to play with the London Broncos. Having played and coached at a very high level in the UK which included over 150 First Grade Super League Games, a Challenge Cup Final Win, 6 appearances for Scotland in World Cup and Tri-Series Matches, 3 years of Coaching UK Senior Grade Teams Rochdale and Leigh, which has provided Darren with vast Rugby League experience that he has brought to his involvement within the NRL WA competition, having previously coached the former Bunbury Reserve Grade team to their maiden Premiership in their second year within the competition. In his 2 years of coaching the Sharks Darren has been very active in giving younger players a chance in First Grade which has proven a great benefit to the club. His personal demeanour and his coaching of the team has instilled within the young Sharks a very positive influence and personal belief and knowledge as to what is required to compete, remain in the contest and win football games which has led to a club which has not had a team in a Grand Final for 9 years. Having missed the Finals last year, and taking out the club's Maiden Minor Premiership this season, the team are hoping to make it Grand Final win this weekend. On Saturday Darren will be his normal self, composed, sending out messages and working his interchanges he considers are required, allowing the players within his team to do what they have been trained to do, and hopefully be in front on the scoreboard at the final siren. Bjorn Crotty – A natural footballer with the passing game of a five eight, footwork of a fullback and the size of a front rower, he has found his home with the Fremantle club. Jesse Day – With a never say die attitude and tight defence Jesse is the starch on bench. He will deliver on every occasion. Edward Palelei – Probably the most versatile utility in WA, on the wing, centre or in the middle Eddie provides the coverage every team needs. Joel Davis – They don’t call this guy “Mental” for no reason. Hard hitting non stop action with fuel to burn. A key forward in the team Te Puna Sellers – 1st year at Fremantle. A very busy player in attack and defence and sets an example to his team mates. His on field performances have earned him Representa- tive honours in both the Perth City ANZAC Challenge Team and WA State Team and is highly regarded by his team mates and his opponents.

Left Wing Hayden Dangen-Toby - Very solid in attack and defence, very good ball runner who is more than willing to take the work load off the forwards. He loves taking the hit ups and carrying the football forward.

He has shown just what a good player he is, displaying all the skills gained from playing within a professional league team, he is a great team leader who has the respect of his team mates.

Half Back Tyler Hunt - In 2017 Tyler was given the opportunity to make his First Grade debut and has proven just what a talent he is. He has more than proven he has the ability to mix it with older more experienced players within the competition and will only improve within future seasons.
