COQUILLE — Convicted of the July kidnapping of two young girls, Robert Perez will spend at least the 1 next 13 ⁄2 years in prison for his crime. The 32-year-old North Bend man was back in a Coos County courtroom Monday morning to be sentenced on a variety of charges, but the biggest were related to the kidnapping of the two girls, 12 and 13 at the time, who he had taken to various spots against their will on the evening of July 9, before police arrived and saved them. When all was said and done at his sentencing hearing, the total number of months in prison reached 212. For 164 of those months, which comes to 13 years and eight months, Perez must serve every single day. A look at the Republican presidential candidate’s schedule of public events shows a remarkably relaxed pace for a man who says this election is critical to Ameri- ca’s future. Here’s what Mitt Romney did on the trail in mid-September: He had one public appearance on his schedule Monday, Sept. 17, a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce in Los Angeles. He had one appearance scheduled the day before, an airport rally in Pueblo, Colo., but it was canceled after a small- plane crash there killed one person. Romney had no public events Saturday. On Friday,Sept. 14, he attended a single rally, at Lake Erie College in Painesville, Ohio. On Thursday, he attended a single rally, at a park in Fairfax, Va. On Wednesday, he was sched- uled to hold a single campaign event at his headquarters in Jacksonville, Fla., but instead appeared at a hastily organized press conference to denounce President Obama’s response to the embassy crises in Libya and Egypt. On Tuesday,Romney had one event, a speech to the National Guard Association con- vention in Reno, Nev. Labor petition causes alarm

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — For weeks, a manifesto com- plaining about Iran’s stum- bling economy circulated in secret among factories and workshops. Organizers asked for signatures and the pages began to fill up. In the end, some 10,000 names were attached to the petition addressed to Iran’s labor minister in one of the most wide-reaching public outcries over the state of the country’s economy, which has received a double pound- ing from tightening Western sanctions and alleged mis- management by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government. The rare protest docu- ment — described to The Associated Press this week by labor activists and others — suggests growing anxiety among Iran’s vast and poten- tially powerful working class as the ruling system struggles with the latest sanctions, which have targeted critical oil exports and blackballed Iran from international banking networks. It also appears to reinforce the U.S. and European asser- tions that the economic squeeze is bringing increas- ing pressures on Iranian authorities. President Barack Obama and others argue that sanctions and diplomacy are the best way to wring con- cessions over Iran’s nuclear program even as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu pushes for a “red line” declaration that could trigger military action. While Iran’s leadership still has broad-based public support in the nuclear stand- off with the West, the peti- tion and sporadic street demonstrations over the slumping economy suggest a growing distinction between the national pride of nuclear technology and the econom- ic hardships from Tehran’s defiance. The Iranian curren- cy, the rial, hit another all- time low against the dollar Monday, which is certain to further drive up prices of imported goods. Ikea deletes women from Saudi version of catalog

STOCKHOLM (AP) — Ikea is being criticized for delet- ing images of women from the Saudi version of its furni- ture catalog, a move the company says it regrets. Comparing the Swedish and Saudi versions of the catalog, free newspaper Metro on Monday showed that women had been air- brushed out of otherwise identical pictures showcas- ing the company’s home fur- nishings. The report raised questions in Sweden about Ikea’s com- mitment to gender equality, and the company released a statement expressing “regret” over the issue. “We should have reacted and realized that excluding women from the Saudi Ara- bian version of the catalog is in conflict with the IKEA Group values,” the company said.
