Chinese Hospital is extremely proud to be marking its 120th anniversary, a significant milestone that very few organizations achieve. It is particularly gratifying to be celebrating this anniversary as Chinese Hospital recently received a 5-Star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) based on quality of care, safety and patient experience. I credit this success to the dedicated medical providers and staff for their devotion to the hospital and the community it serves.

Reflecting on the long-standing history of Chinese Hospital, I would like to acknowledge our original founders for their visionary leadership in creating this culturally sensitive healthcare organization to serve the Chinese community when they were denied healthcare elsewhere. In addition, I wish to recognize the generations of board members, medical staff and community leaders who fought tirelessly for the survival of Chinese Hospital during the past 120 years. Thanks to the contribution and dedication from the resilient leaders and support from the community, Chinese Hospital has transformed from a small dispensary in 1899 to a modern state-of-the-art hospital today.

Together with its partners, Chinese Hospital is focused on improving healthcare access, quality of care, patient experience, long-term financial viability and strengthening of our hospital culture and operational stability.

Most importantly, I would like to express my sincere appreciation to all of you, supporters of Chinese Hospital, for your continued trust in our healthcare system. Chinese Hospital is committed in making our community healthy.

Dr. Jian Zhang, DNP, MS, FNP-BC Chief Executive Officer, Chinese Hospital

Dear Friends,

Chinese Hospital’s landmark completion of the 2016 Patient Tower has won extraordinary, positive attention throughout San Francisco and beyond, and a 5-Star Rating for overall performance from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). The 5-Star Rating from CMS is unique among all acute care hospitals in San Francisco, in which donors like you can share sincere and well-deserved pride of accomplishment.

The sparkling new building has inspired a diligent re-design with renovation plans for the adjacent but dated 1979 hospital building, so that it better complements the 5-Star standards set by the new Patient Tower. The plans will allow Chinese Hospital to provide new, more efficient and expanded healthcare services by leveraging the physical envelope of the existing structure, thus providing a cost-effective approach consistent with Chinese Hospital’s reputation for efficient use of donors’ investments.

The same capable team that successfully managed the Patient Tower Project has been working with design and construction teams to fulfill the vision set by our Hospital leadership, the Board of Trustees, current and prospective campaign donors, patients, their families, and the community-at-large.

Upgrading the seismically-sound interior layout and facilities of the 1979 building is a cost-effective, wise investment that will pay off with continued high levels of patient care and satisfaction. Every square foot of the 5-story building, the rooftop and one basement floor, will be touched and renewed as a result of this project.

Spectacular naming opportunities for donors, and those they seek to honor, are available throughout the 1979 Building with a select few remaining in the new Patient Tower. Chinese Hospital now turns to traditional and new supporters to raise the $23 million balance of the $30 million required to complete these vital renovations in time for our 125th Anniversary in 2024.

Chinese Hospital appreciates that it is the continued generous support of donors like you that makes our 5-Star healthcare possible for patients and their families. On their behalf, thank you!

George Lew, President Harvey Louie, Vice President Board of Trustees Board of Trustees Chair, 1979 Building Projects Committee Chair, Fundraising Committee

Two-term Mayor of San Francisco, legendary Speaker of the California State Assembly, and widely regarded as the most influential African-American politician of the late twentieth century, Willie L. Brown, Jr., has been at the center of California politics, government, and civic life for an astonishing four decades. His career spans the American Presidency from Lyndon Johnson to George W. Bush, and he’s worked with every California Governor from Pat Brown to Arnold Schwarzenegger. From civil rights to education reform, tax policy, economic development, health care, international trade, domestic partnerships, and affirmative action, he’s left his imprimatur on every aspect of politics and public policy in the Golden State. As Mayor of California’s most cosmopolitan city, he refurbished and rebuilt the nation’s busiest transit system, pioneered the use of bond measures to build affordable housing, created a model juvenile justice system, and paved the way for a second campus of the University of California, San Francisco, to serve as the anchor of a new development that will position the City as a center for the burgeoning field of biotechnology. Today, he heads the Willie L. Brown, Jr., Institute on Politics and Public Service, where this acknowledged master of the-art-of-politics shares his knowledge and skills with a new generation of California leaders.

The called Willie L. Brown Jr. “one of San Francisco’s most notable mayors” who had “celebrity beyond the city’s boundaries.” At Chinese Hospital, we refer him as one of the most remarkable leaders in the Chinese community. Willie L. Brown, Jr. is not only a longtime supporter of Chinese Hospital, but also a top advocate for the hospital. He played a key role in developing the golf tournament alongside Rose Pak and back in the 1990s. In 2018, he became the co-chair of our golf tournament committee. Additionally, he is our beloved auctioneer at the golf tournament.

We would like to thank Willie L. Brown, Jr. for being a key part of our community’s history and legacy. As he has played an influential part of Chinese Hospital’s evolution and success for more than 25 years, we are proud to present the Honorable Willie L. Brown, Jr. with the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Together, Keith and Carmelita embarked upon an impactful journey of philanthropy, with an emphasis on healthcare. Chinese Hospital is one of the many healthcare institutions that they support.

“My wife and I worked very hard for survival, we are now both seniors, and we are fortunate to be able to support an institution that helps the Chinese Community as well as those in the community who are less fortunate and unable to afford quality healthcare,” said Keith.

Keith took an interest in helping Chinese Hospital when he first read an article about the new Patient Tower construction project. He also learned more about Chinese Hospital through his physician friends. Keith and Carmelita valued and supported Chinese Hospital at every level, and proudly funded the Chinese Hospital new Patient Tower. In recognition of their contributions and support to the hospital, their names are listed in the stress testing room, stress exam room, radiology room, nurse station, the hospital lobby and many more locations.
