The rest of the day is your own leisure. Accommodation: Hotel Meals: There is no meal included on this day. Day 2 Yangon – Bagan – Temples Tour In the early morning, take the short flight to Bagan. Once at Bagan, your tour guide will take you around its wonderful scenery and architecture. Bagan is a truly mesmerizing destination, and a favourite of many travellers. Renowned as the city of four million pagodas, this is one of the richest archaeological sites in Asia. Today there are more than 2,000 pagodas, temples and monasteries — most built during the Bagan Dynasty, founded by King Anawrahta in 1044. Firstly, we’ll go to lively Nyaung U Market where your guide will help you to discover a variety of Burmese traditional breakfasts. For breakfast, you will have your breakfast at a local tea house, which is situated next to the market. This Nyaung U Market provides great photo opportunity, and also the chance for tourists to mingle with the local Myanmar people, and watch how they conduct their daily lives. Next, we will start sightseeing as below: • Shwe-Zi-Gon Pagoda (considered a prototype of all future such temples) • Hti-Lo-Min-Lo Temple (a double-storied building with artistic stucco works) • Ananda Temple (the architectural masterpiece of a millennium) • That-Byin-Nyu Temple (the tallest in Bagan) • Dham-Ma-Yan-Gyi Temple (noted for its intricate brickwork) • Shwe-San-Daw Pagoda (We will spend this evening at the top of this pagoda for a superb sunset view) Accommodation: Hotel Page 3 of 6 Meals: Breakfast Day 3 Mount Popa – Local Products and Village Tour – Sunset Boat Trip After breakfast at hotel, drive to Mount Popa. It is the core of an extinct volcano lasted active 25,000 years ago; also known as the ‘Mt Olympus’ of Myanmar, the abode of Myanmar’s most powerful Nats (Spiritual beings) and the most important Nat Worship Centre. It will take 1 hour drive from Bagan passing the palm plantation. On the way to Mount Popa, stop to see skilful toddy- palm climber collecting the wine on top of the tree, toddy palm juice & palm sugar (jaggery) making cottage. Bagan is not only famous for the profusion of ancient temples, but also for its exquisite handicrafts. After lunch at local restaurant, we will drive to the place to watch the time consuming and intricate production of quality lacquer ware. Some of the finest are flexible, and made around bamboo and twisted horse hair. Next, you’ll learn about the making of Bagan’s most famous food, ‘Pone Yay Gyi’ at a local shop. This black paste is made from soy beans and you’ll get to see how it’s made, from the raw soy beans through to the finished product. Finally, visit Taung Bi Village to look through some private homes and local businesses. While not the home of any great monuments or temples, our walk through this peaceful village really is a nice change of pace from the hectic pace of cities. And then transfer to the jetty to spend the whole evening by enjoying sunset boat ride along Ayarwaddy River. Accommodation: Hotel Meals: Breakfast Day 4 Bagan – Heho – Pindaya Caves – Inle Lake After breakfast at hotel, take the short flight to Heho. Once at Heho, meet your transfer team. From here, we will proceed to Pindaya by car (about 2 hrs drive). This drive will give you delightful sceneries of hill station by passing through picturesque landscapes. With our Inle Lake Boat Trip Day tour, you will experience a unique way of life that has lived on through generations, whilst exploring the culturally significant surrounds that form part of this beautiful region of Myanmar. You will be provided with a life jacket and easy seat for each person on the boat. • Burma Pilgrimage with Roshi Joan Halifax and Ken Ballard
Burma Pilgrimage Feb 9-23, 2011 Touching the Earth, Blessed by Water: Burma Pilgrimage with Roshi Joan Halifax and Ken Ballard From the crystalline Andaman Sea to the winding Ayerwaddy River, from the green Shan mountains to shining Lake Inle, from the thousands of stupas of Bagan to the great shrine of Shwedagon, we pilgrimage through Burma as a kalyanamitra, a sangha of kindness, as we meet the Burmese people, practice in her temples, offer alms to her monks and nuns, and come home to the old Buddhism of this imperiled nation. We will be in Burma on Makha Bucha day, celebrating the first sermon the Buddha gave at Sarnath after his Enlightenment, and Valentines Day, a time of loving kindness. At these times, we give alms to the monks, meditate, and renew our Bodhisattva Vows. Burma with her misty mountains, glittering golden pagodas, monks in maroon and nuns in pink, the magnificent Ayerwaddy river which cuts through the heart of this beautiful country and more. It is a land of contradictions: a country with two names, which has been subject to many centuries of oppression, from Kublai Khan’s hoards, to King George VI and colonialism, to the present military regime. Yet in spite of this, the spirit of the Burmese people continues strong, and the awesome remnants of past grandeur are ever present, from the ancient Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon, to the dynasties of the 11th century of Bagan, on the might Ayerwaddy. Kipling said of Burma: “ Then, a golden mystery upheaved itself of the horizon-This is Burma, quite unlike any land you know about.” The countryside is golden, the pagodas golden, a cave is filled with over 8000 golden Buddha images, even the sand of the pristine Ngapali beach is golden.
