When referring specifically to a country’s aerial military organization, I capitalize the name Air Force. Otherwise, when simply discussing the concept in the abstract, I write it as the lower case air force. In accordance with military standards, I also capitalize the entire name of all code names for operations (OPERATION MATTERHORN or MATTERHORN). Air Force’s names are written out (Twentieth Air Force), the bomber commands are written in Roman numerals (XX Bomber Command, or simply XX), while combat groups are given Arabic numerals (305th Bomber Group). The rivers have intimate relationship with our lives. Those conditions have been seen after modern river improvement projects that began about a century ago. The technology which was introduced from foreign countries was improved in conformity with geographical features and the climate condition of our nation, and has redeveloped as a Japanese original technology. In 1940's, Japan had serious natural disasters that were caused by large- scale typhoons. Those typhoons wiped out everything completely. Even though the government realized the importance of flood control and management after those natural disasters, civil work still aimed to economic development. Those construction works have become the one of factors for concentrating population and degrading natural environment in urban areas. Deterioration of river environment has become serious issue in urban development and main cause of pollution. The approaches for environmental restorations which were started about 30 years ago aimed to harmonize with nature environment and cities and human lives. There have been going on many projects called “river environmental improvement projects”, the “nature friendly river works” and “natural restoration projects.” The society has tried to find a way to live in harmony with nature. -

Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

FIRE AWAY Toward the end of World War II, the Allied Forces shifted tactics from the relatively ineffective high-altitude precision bombing of military targets to low-altitude firebombing of urban areas. This new form of bombing involved dropping a combination of high-explosive bombs to break windows and incendiary bombs to start fires. Over the span of eleven days in the summer of 1943, British and American forces bombed Hamburg, Germany, multiple times in a campaign codenamed “Operation Gomorrah.” During the night of 27 July, a combination of weather conditions and concentrated bombing produced a firestorm that sucked all the oxygen out of the lower atmosphere, produced winds up to 150 mph and temperatures around 1,500ºF, and towered over 1,000 feet into the sky. No one had predicted a firestorm as a possible side-effect of the bombing. Over the course of Operation Gomorrah, the bombing and subsequent firestorm killed over 40,000 people, according an article about the operation in Air Force Magazine, 2007. The Allies conducted a similar campaign against Dresden, Germany, during three days in February 1945, while the German army was retreating from all fronts. Previous bombing raids had been conducted against the railroad classification yards in Dresden, but this campaign targeted the inner city. On the morning of 14 February, the bombing produced a firestorm similar to the one in Hamburg, with temperatures reaching 2,700ºF. German sources have the number of people killed ranging between 25,000 and 35,000. The actual number was probably closer to 45,000, according to an article called “Firebombing (Germany & Japan),” by Conrad C. -

Such popular impres- sions may include artworks insinuating copulation between wrathful Tdeities that portend to convey a profound and hidden meaning, or mysterious rites involving sexual symbolism and the summoning of otherworldly powers to execute acts of violence on behalf of a patron. Similar to tantric Buddhism elsewhere in Asia, many of the popular representations of such imagery can be dismissed as modern interpretations and constructs (White 2000, 4–5; Wede- meyer 2013, 18–36). -
