DUBAI CARNIVAL PROGRAM REVEALED The Dubai Racing Club has revealed the list of fixtures for the Carnival, which gets underway at Meydan Racecourse Jan. 9 and culminates in the Dubai World Cup card Mar. 29. The carnival, which is worth a total of more than US$37-million in prize moneyBincluding more than US$27-million on World Cup night--will feature 11 meetings, including Super Saturday, the local prep card for the World Cup Mar. 9. The program will see a number of upgrades, including the promotion of the 3200-meter Dubai Gold Cup on Dubai World Cup night from a Group 3 to a Group 2, and the Meydan Sprint on Super Saturday from listed status to Group 3. Three conditions races will be upgraded to listed status. They are the S. over 1800m on the turf to be held Jan. 9; the Dubawi S. over 1200m on the Tapeta Jan. 16, and the Dubai Millennium S. going 2000m on the turf Feb. 20. Other races with significant changes are the Al Fahidi Fort, traditionally held over 1600m during the seventh meeting, which will this year be held over 1400m during the third meeting, and the Meydan Classic, which has been dropped from 1600m to 1400m. Martin Talty, International Manager of the Dubai Racing Club, said the changes had been made to further refine and develop the Dubai World Cup Carnival. AWe wanted to develop our 1400m program, and noted that there were not many races of the status of the Al Fahidi Fort over that distance around the world,@ he said. AWe wanted to open the race up a bit so that it ties in with the Zabeel Mile held five weeks later, which can be used to prep for Dubai World Cup day races.@ Talty added that newly upgraded Dubai Millennium S. would give trainers extra options when prepping for valuable Group 1 races on Dubai World Cup day. AThis 2000m race was named after the great Dubai Millennium and fits into our schedule on Feb. 20, where it is four weeks out from Dubai World Cup night and horses can use it to prepare for any of the three final races on the Dubai World Cup-day card, the [G1] Dubai Duty Free, the [G1] or the [G1] Dubai World Cup,@ he said. Talty also noted that the Dubai Gold Cup has been earmarked for future growth. AThis race became a Group 3 in 2010 and moved to the Dubai World Cup program in 2012. It is a race that has become attractive to trainers with stayers from around the world and hopefully in years to come it will take another step up to a Group 1, adding further value to the Dubai World Cup card," he said.
