In previous articles I’ve mentioned the likely impact that the new pension regulations will have on small employers. This month will be dominated by Go Set a Watchman, written Already a number of small businesses have been fined before To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee but set aside and only for failing to auto-enrol their employees in a company discovered last year. It narrates a similar story from the perspective of pension scheme. Many employers are totally oblivious of an adult Scout Finch. Many employers who have already auto-enrolled their staff are equally confused as, after setting up a pension scheme, they find that all of their workers have opted out. The cost to small businesses is horrendous, as usual the politicians have dumped an ill thought out piece of legislation on employers. Time will tell whether the ultimate cost will be paid by those employees who are already on a low wage. In many cases it may be easier for employers not to employ people rather than become embroiled in pension red tape. This pioneering Cotswold Enterprise is in good spirits Article by Caroline Fisher with photographs by Chris Turner©Cotswold Times 02.2015

BARLEY bending in the breeze planted the grain of an

idea in the brain of an entrepreneur. Gazing out of his bedroom window at a neighbouring field, Dan Szor reckoned there could be a future in distilling in the Cotswolds – and in a converted stone barn he founded the Co tswold Distillery, the first in the area. It will take three years to produce the first batch of Cotswolds Single Malt Whisky. But after only months the New York-born businessman is poised to crack the

market in his old home town and Paris with what was initially destined to be a ‘stop-gap’ product - Cotswolds Dry Gin.

‘from hedge funds to hedge rows’ The down -to-earth rural enterprise at Phillip’s Field, Stourton near Shipston-on-Stour, is a far cry from Dan’s former high-flying, city-based financial career. As he succinctly puts it, he went ‘from hedge funds to hedge rows’, and with an infectious schoolboy-like enthusiasm

mixed with trepidation for his pioneering profession, I had the distinct impression that the quantum leap still surprises him. “The magical part of the whisky is what

goes on in the wood as it matures, which is completely unknown,” Dan confessed. “It’s frightening for an owner, and an investor, because you don’t know how it’s going to taste after that interaction. But whisky’s where it’s at.” Sinking his pension fund into the risky business, Dan has put his long-term faith in the artisanal natural product made from local organic barley, hand-

malted using traditional methods before being mashed, fermented and distilled on-site. In the interim he needed a complementary product to sell while the whisky matured so, taking another leap

into the unknown, he has created a limited edition of craft gins. A few months on, and he’s overjoyed that the first Cotswolds Dry Gin is coming up trumps. “I didn’t expect such a positive reaction – people have been over- the-top about how much flavour is packed into it,” he said. “We’ve not just got a stop-gap before the whisky matures, perhaps it can even eclipse whisky in sales.

People aren’t just buying a bottle, but the whole story behind it.”

14 Dan’s vision was for a London-style traditional gin ‘with a Cotswolds twist’. The hand-picked team of head distiller Alex Davies, general manager Nick Francino and head brewer Shaun Smith researched and listed the botanical ingredients required, building up a library of 160 bottled botanical ingredients and began concocting. “We distilled them day in day out with different flavoured herbs, spices and flowers – everything we could think of as we were learning,” Alex explained. “We bottled the recipes, checked for aroma and intensity and tasted them before presenting them every week for feedback from blind tastings. After a month we chose four gins each and went before a blind tasting panel at Campden BRI, the UK’s leading brewing research centre. They selected one gin from each of us for another blind tasting, with eight other competitor gins.” It was Dan’s recipe that came out tops.

Nine botanicals make up the blend – juniper berries, coriander and angelica root are macerated into the pure wheat spirit for 12 hours. Then bay leaf, fresh pink grapefruit peel, lime peel, cardamom seed, black pepper and local Snowshill lavender are added into a carter head still for distillation before finishing with naturally refined Cotswolds water. Some 24,000 bottles were planned for the first year.

“There’s a lot of passion and enthusiasm here in everything we do.”

Alex, 26, studied bio-chemistry and worked in Kent’s hop fields before qualifying in brewing and distillery. He leads daily tours of the gleaming copper pot stills, tailor-made in Scotland, explaining the array of sleek equipment and meticulous processes involved in creating the product. At the tasting we first sampled 46% neat gin, then added a couple of ice cubes before finishing it off with tonic water. Citrus notes hit the palette upfront, with earthy, spicy and floral notes following and a satisfying clean finish.

Dan started work in banking, trading foreign currency and moving to a currency consultation firm. He harboured a long-term passion for single malt whisky and joined the Scotch Malt Whisky Society in Paris, where he had launched a European office for his firm. He became involved with La Maison du Whisky, and grew to appreciate what the spirit really represented on visits to Scotland, together with his best friend and business colleague. They bought their first barrel of whisky on the Isle of Isla in 2002. Post-2008 he felt the bottom was falling out of his career industry, and he had his barley field ‘epiphany’ in 2012. The idea lay dormant until the next year, when he attended a New York whisky show and noticed a booming US craze for ‘craft distilling’. Dan felt the trend could ‘jump the pond’ and with help to realise his dream from world-renowned Scottish master distiller Harry Cockburn, wood and aging consultant Jim Swan, and Scottish still makers Forsythe, he found the Cotswold site and is forging ahead. 15 PUBLIC EXHIBITION DEMAND GROWS FOR KEMBLE IRFIELD SMALL WORKSHOPS Commercial Estates Group (CEG) invites you to view & discuss the Small businesses across the region are beginning to face emerging plans for the redevelopment of Kemble Airfield. the ever growing problem of finding small workshop units. 2015 Local Business Charity Awards These awards recognise the support and contributions made by local businesses and individuals to local Gloucestershire charities – this is their second year. Last year solicitors Sewell Mullings Logie LLP won the corporate award for their work with The Churn Project, a community charity for the residents of Cirencester and the individual award was won by Geof Robins, operations director of Printwaste Recycling, for his work with two local charities, The Butterfly Garden and Cobalt Health. This year there will be three categories to enter: The Corporate Award is given to a local Gloucestershire business who judges feel have gone the ‘extra mile’ either through time given, services provided or financial support, to a local Gloucestershire charity. The Team Award is given to a local Gloucestershire business who used a team of their employees to support a local Gloucestershire charity at an event. The Individual Award is given to an individual from within a Gloucestershire company, in recognition of their personal dedication and contribution to the local Gloucestershire charity, supported by their employer. Prizes for the Individual and Corporate Awards will be a £1,000 donation to the charities supported by the winning company. The individual prize will be a luxury weekend away (value £250). The church community itself is incredibly excited about the project. Not only will it provide the church family with a meeting point, but it will also enable them to reach out to the community and share what they already do from a more formalised and permanent location. The developers are also keen to see the project as something that is a win-win situation for all. Not only does the church receive a restored beautiful building for their meetings, but the project is also providing eight affordable homes in a location that is desperate for good housing. B&R Developments are not interested in building large fancy homes which only a few can afford, but in creating The inside of the main church... like a bomb site! developments which can benefit a wide range of people within the local community.

The present church, which has been empty for over five years, was completed in 1863 – although the official founding of the Baptist Church congregation was a century-and-a-half earlier in 1694. The church has been at the centre of community life in Chippy for several hundred years, and it is hoped that this new project will enable the church to carry on as a core part of life in the town. Extensive work is required, as the interior of the site looks pretty much like a bomb site after years of neglect. However, the brick structure is in good order, and once restored will again make an impressive sight along New Street. The work is progressing well, with the majority of the rubble and interiors now removed.

The Baptist Church currently meets at the Highlands Day Centre on the Burford Road at 10.30am every 2nd and 4th Sunday, with ‘Messy’ Church on the 3rd Sunday at 2.30pm. Both developer and church hope to open the new building in May 2016. On Friday 5th June guests, including the Deputy Lieutenant of Oxfordshire David Astor, attended a ceremony to unveil a stained glass window to commemorate the Centenary of the First World War.

The stained glass windows were the product of exceptional community collaboration. Chipping Norton School was approached by the Royal British Legion and the Mayor to design a permanent memorial to the centenary of the Great War. Students submitted designs and it was decided that a stained glass window was the favoured option, with images selected by the Royal British Legion, the Mayor and the school.

The poppy design by Zoe Foster and the words by Georgia Juckes were chosen for a single panel. Steve Kingsford of the Royal British Legion made a design deconstructing the images and adding a couple more. On looking at possible sites for the commemorative glass it was decided to expand the single window to three panels to be located at the back of the main hall Chipping Norton School. Stained glass expert Graham Brant was commissioned and working sketches were produced. This allowed us to incorporate the artwork of Beth Coombes into the final design.

Fundraising was added to grants from WODC, Chipping Norton Royal Beth Coombes, Zoe Foster and Georgia Juckes British legion, Chipping Norton Rotary Club, the Town Council, the Freemasons and Chipping Norton School. The outstanding stained glass windows are a very fitting memorial to the Great War and a celebration of community collaboration.

Introduction. Detective Danger walked through his front door frowning. He had just received news from Central that they needed his help on an extremely important case. The suspected culprit had a familiar name, one he recognised. Detective Danger had dealt with him long ago on another major case - the suspected culprit was nicknamed by his victims ‘Dodgy Dick’ for ‘obtaining’ precious artwork and selling it on the black market. He had recently been let out of prison, and he was at it again. But this time it seems he had been much more cautious and efficient, and had already stolen priceless works of art from over 70 people; and word on the street had it that he had moved to France to hide away from the police. But, soon enough Central had heard of it and quickly sent the case to the top man, Detective Danger, who never let anyone down - , he was the best of the best.

I have information about ‘Dodgy Dick’, he is at an apartment in Paris. I will send you Detective Danger crossed the basement to a table, he swept his address. He has probably assumed a new name, so we his old cases aside and placed down the heavy folder will need to find him by DNA. Oh, and I found his shop, it’s marked ‘ Confidential’. He opened it slowly revealing many in the Cotswolds, you could find DNA there.” Fred replied, reports confirming that Dodgy Dick had taken artwork under “Ok, sure DD. Can you investigate the address? We will do false pretences, sold it and never paid the money. As the further research while you are on your way and email detective read, the sum of stolen money rose higher and anything we find out.” higher. It was clear - Dodgy Dick had stolen thousands of pounds! Detective Danger shook his head sadly. The next day Detective Danger walked up his staircase and Unfortunately some people took the wrong decisions in life, into his study; he shuffled through some drawers until he and deciding to steal was a bad choice ending in prison or found what he wanted, his identification card. LONGBOROUGH OPERA The day’s organiser Jackie Flaherty, Head of Physics, Chipping Campden School and co-ordinator of the Chipping Campden Primary Partnership Workshops in local schools said: "We are grateful to the Ogden Trust for funding such a brilliant day. There was a real buzz about science amongst the children and it was

lovely to see pupils from so many schools working together in our labs. Maria Jagusz and two young artists from the West End, accompanied by Jessica May, spent a day with each of four local schools in June – Longborough, Great Rollright, Kitebrook, and Ilmington. Based loosely around Verdi’s Rigoletto, one of the operas being performed at LFO St David’s C of E Primary School Headteacher: Mrs F Heming this season, the workshop was designed to bring the opera to life. Enquiring minds, caring hearts, creative hands Students from Chipping Campden Academy and other secondary Our Year 6 pupils have been extremely busy already this term, schools were invited to join the Primary school students at LFO undertaking a Bread Project in conjunctions with Warner’s Budgens. On rehearsals, encouraging them to fully experience how everything fits Monday 8th June the Year 6 pupils visited Budgens’ bakery in Tewkesbury together - the orchestra, the singers, the stage, the theatre, the crew. to have a go at making croissants and bread as well as tasting a variety of bread. Following on from this visit, the children thought about the type of bread they would like to make themselves. The children visited Budgens in order to buy their own ingredients then followed a recipe to make it. The winning bread, tasted by the Manager at Budgens, will then be sold at our Summer Fair on Saturday 20th June – good luck everyone! The children in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit from a local vet who talked about what can be discovered from an animal’s waste! It was a fantastic end to their topic ‘Bumps, Bottoms and Bile’ and the children gained a great deal of knowledge from the experience. A group of determined Year 5 pupils took part in an Archery and Mountain Biking event at Stow Rugby Club on Thursday 21st May as part of Sainsbury’s School Games calendar. Many South Cotswold Schools took part and all those who attended had a great day. Our 9 children who took part in the Archery competition learned new skills and co-operated as a team. Our Mountain Biking team achieved 2nd and 3rd place in the timed trial and our relay team finished in 3rd place; well done!

Flaming June has lived up to its’ name in both senses of the word, with generally good weather for Saturdays but somehow being less than ideal for youth cricket on Fridays.

The First XI have maintained their position in Division 2, though losing in the Cup, while the Second XI have found the going in Division 6 harder of late. July will see not only the big Charity match against the Oxford United Legends on the 5th but also several important fixtures in the league. There have been some impressive individual performances with both bat and ball, with half centuries being scored and five wicket hauls being taken, but it would seem that inconsistency of performance is a problem for both teams. This is epitomised by the Seconds winning their first five games and then losing three in a row. The Firsts, despite a second league defeat, are still top of Division 2. The highlights have been a last wicket partnership of 33 runs between Sam Townsend and Danny Molyneux seeing the Second XI to victory over Bampton and the First XI despatching E and W Hendred by 8 wickets , thanks to 5 - 26 by Matty Molyneux and 58 by Mark Usher. Wicketkeeper Ian Widdows also stumped three batsmen. Other notable First XI individual performances included Adam Wallington’s 5-27 in a win over Garsington, Mark Jarvis’s 6-40 in a loss to Marsh Gibbon and Richard Ferley’s 64 in Cup loss to Westbury. For the Second XI, Rob Bradford took 5-35 and Will Curtis scored 42 in a win against Brill, Sam Townsend reached 50 in a losing cause against Kidlington and Michael Tompkins 55 similarly against CNDCC Fixtures July Westbury. Upcoming Fixtures: First XI : Second XI July 4th Broughton NN H : Shrivenham A 11th Wantage A : Broughton NN II H 18th Faringdon H : Faringdon II A 25th Witney Swifts A : Brill H.

Training Structured squad training continues on Wednesday evenings throughout the summer starting at 6pm at the Cricket Club. For all club details, stats, fixtures, archives and match reports please visit our website: www.cndcc.co.u k
