The Oxfordshire Cotswolds is like a beautifully illustrated history lesson with centuries of colourful chapters and a past that is still part of the present. So let’s go way back and start at the very beginning.

A mysterious circle of standing stones Legend has it that the Stones are the king’s knights turned to stone, eerie monuments to the sorcery of a wicked witch. Whatever the truth, this puzzling ring of stones remains an impressive sight dating back some 5,000 years into the depths of prehistory. The Oxfordshire Cotswolds has some of the most beautiful gardens in the country.

Blenheim Palace has over 2,000 acres of ‘Capability’ Brown landscaped parkland and 100 acres of formal gardens. Wander through the Rose , walk beside the 150 acre lake to the Chastleton House much acclaimed Cascades, or in the Secret Gardens. Travel by miniature train to the Pleasure Gardens which contain the Marlborough Maze, one of the largest hedge mazes in Europe. Kelmscott Manor was home to William Morris – poet, craftsman, socialist and leader of the Arts & Crafts movement who called Kelmscott “a heaven on earth”. The garden with its barns, dovecot, stream, meadow and small formal garden was a constant source of inspiration for Morris and the flora and fauna of the surrounding area are reflected in his textile and wallpaper designs, many of which are on display in the manor house. Chastleton House is a rare gem of a Jacobean country house whose and Church © DC garden has features from several periods including Jacobean topiary, an astronomical garden and a herbaceous border planted to Gertrude Jekyll’s ‘JMW Turner’ colour scheme.
