Performing Shakespeare in Contemporary Taiwan by Ya-hui Huang A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment for the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Central Lancashire Jan 2012 Abstract Since the 1980s, Taiwan has been subjected to heavy foreign and global influences, leading to a marked erosion of its traditional cultural forms. Indigenous traditions have had to struggle to hold their own and to strike out into new territory, adopt or adapt to Western models. For most theatres in Taiwan, Shakespeare has inevitably served as a model to be imitated and a touchstone of quality. Such Taiwanese Shakespeare performances prove to be much more than merely a combination of Shakespeare and Taiwan, constituting a new fusion which shows Taiwan as hospitable to foreign influences and unafraid to modify them for its own purposes. Nonetheless, Shakespeare performances in contemporary Taiwan are not only a demonstration of hybridity of Westernisation but also Sinification influences. Since the 1945 Kuomintang (Chinese Nationalist Party, or KMT) takeover of Taiwan, the KMT’s one-party state has established Chinese identity over a Taiwan identity by imposing cultural assimilation through such practices as the Mandarin-only policy during the Chinese Cultural Renaissance in Taiwan. Both Taiwan and Mainland China are on the margin of a “metropolitan bank of Shakespeare knowledge” (Orkin, 2005, p. 1), but it is this negotiation of identity that makes the Taiwanese interpretation of Shakespeare much different from that of a Mainlanders’ approach, while they share certain commonalities that inextricably link them. This study thus examines the interrelation between Taiwan and Mainland China operatic cultural forms and how negotiation of their different identities constitutes a singular different Taiwanese Shakespeare from Chinese Shakespeare. -
Investigation of Deformation Front in Miaoli Offshore Area, Taiwan

Investigation of deformation front in Miaoli offshore area, Taiwan Sz-Jie Chen and Gwo-Shyh Song national taiwan university, Oceanography, Taipei, Taiwan Taiwan is located in the collision zone between the Eurasia plate and the Philippine Sea plate. The Philippine Sea plate moves to northwest at a rate of 7 cm per year relative to the Eurasian plate resulting in forming a series of fold-and-thrust belts aligned in northeast-southwest direction. Westward compressive forces gave the younger or more active faults are located in the west. Scholars refer the west edge of fold and thrust belts as the location of so-called deformation front. To the north of the Sanyi-Puli Seismic Zone, it is believed the front goes to ocean floor and is located offshore of Miaoli and Hsinchu County. Previous studies indicated that the deformation front follows the trace of Hsinchu fault extending offshore to the place where water depth at 35m. Beneath water layer, sediment strata were deformed compressively to imply its young occurrence. Accordingly, this study was proposed, we therefore believed that the trace of deformation front shall be turned southward and aligned offshore along the coastal line of Chunan-Houlong. The tools to trace the deformation front offshore Chunan and Houlong are reflection seismic system, multi-beam echo sounder and side-scan sonar system in this study. Survey results indicate offshore deformation front appears along a reverse fault with 0.8◦ dipping angle southeastwards, and its trace extending from Hsinchu Fault to the deeper area over 50 meters depth. -

The Nationalist Party first defined the Incident as a rebellion by pro-Japanese forces and communist saboteurs. As the enemy of the Nationalist Party in China’s Civil War (1946-1949), the Chinese Communist Party initially interpreted the Incident as a Taiwanese fight for political autonomy in the party’s wartime propaganda, and then reinterpreted the event as an anti-Nationalist uprising under its own leadership. -

Development of healthy cities in Taiwan The healthy cities movement began in 1986. It was first promoted by the WHO Regional Office for Europe, and primarily targeted European cities. After almost two decades of work, the results have been very good, and European healthy cities are now exemplars for the world. As a result, WHO regional offices have started to advocate healthy cities for each of their regions. In Taiwan, the Republic of China decided to participate in the healthy cities movement in the beginning of the new Millennium. The Bureau of Health Promotion (BHP), Department of Health called for a pilot proposal in 2003, a cross-disciplinary team of scholars at National Cheng Kung University won the project, and found collaboration from Tainan City, thus, pioneered the healthy city development in Taiwan. BHP has since continued to fund other local authorities to promote healthy cities, including Miaoli County, Hualien County, Kaohsiung City and Taipei County. Since the results have been excellent, some other counties and cities have also allotted budgets to commission related departments for implementation. -

To achieve our goals we will need everyone’s contribution and support. Nobody at Hsinchu or Standard Chartered will lose their jobs as a result of this acquisition,” said Mr. Nargolwala. Wu Chih Wei, Hsinchu President, said: “Our customers will benefit from world class financial products and services and one of the strongest banking networks in Asia. “Our people will benefit from being part of a fast growing organisation – a bank with an excellent reputation, a bank that cares deeply about its people and their development.” Mr. Nargolwala and Mr. Wu were speaking at a press conference to mark the successful tender offer for Hsinchu; 95.4 per cent of Hsinchu shareholders accepted Standard Chartered’s offer. -

This study thus applies the theory of carrying capacity and the given demand side to explore the carrying capacity, carrying efficiency, and potential adjustment ratio of medical staff in Taiwan’s administrative regions by using the data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach in which a lower carrying efficiency implies a higher shortage ratio. The main findings are as follows. (i) The carrying efficiency of Taiwan’s medical staff is weakening year by year, while the carrying efficiency of the country’s nurses is lower than that of physicians. (ii) The outlying islands of Taiwan have a more serious shortage of physicians and nurses than the main island. (iii) The central government should encourage more physicians and nurses to work in regions with a low carrying efficiency. GENERAL RULES & REGULATIONS FOR 2014 TAIWAN INTERNATIONAL WOOD SCULPTURE COMPETITION 1. Purpose: To enhance international cultural exchange as well as to promote the inheritance and innovation of the art of woodcarving. 2. Organizers: 1) Supervisor: Council for Cultural Affairs, Executive Yuan 2) Organizer: International Culture and Tourism Bureau, Miaoli County Government 3) Office-in-Charge: Sanyi Wood Sculpture Museum, Miaoli County Government 3. Entry Qualifications: For all domestic and foreign artists. 1) The submitted art piece must be original and of individual creation in the past two years. The maximum for each artist is two pieces. 2) The following offenses will cause disqualification for a 3-year period from participation in the competition. (i) Copy or assume the work of another person. (ii) Entries have been entered in other competitions, or shown in any public/private exhibitions (including any part of the art work) 4. Entry and Regulations: The contents of works are created with either traditional/contemporary single wood or complex materials. The size of each work is confined within 60cm – 150cm for every length, width and height. Please seal with sturdy boxes for transportation and stick a photo of the art work on the top of the box.
