Agnus Dei Lutheran Church Fifth Sunday of Easter May 2, 2021

Gather The Holy Spirit calls us together as the people of God.

Prelude I Danced in the Morning J. Wayne Kerr

Welcome Pastor Chelsea Globe (University of Washington) Pastor Joel Langholz (Western Washington University) Karla Neumann-Smiley (Washington State University & University of Idaho-Moscow) Pastor Arianna Arends (Eastern Washington University)

Call to Worship Pastor Joel Langholz & WWU students We are branches, rooted in the vine of Christ. We come because we seek to abide in Christ. The branches that remain in the vine bear much fruit. We come because we long to be spiritually vibrant, alive, productive. If we abide in Christ, then Christ’s words will abide in us. We come because we strive to be faithful disciples. We gather for worship now to the glory of the One God: Creator, Redeemer, and Sustainer. May we grow wildly as God tends us lovingly. Amen.

Gathering Song By Way of Sorrow (Cry, Cry, Cry) Julie Miller Family of Grace Lutheran Church, Auburn, WA

Verse 1: Verse 2: You’ve been taken by the wind You have drunk a bitter wine You have known the kiss of sorrows With none to be your comfort Doors that would not take you in You who once were left behind Outcast and a stranger Will be welcome at love’s tables

Chorus: Verse 3: You have come by way of sorrow All the nights that joy has slept you have come by way of tears Will awake to days of laughter But you’ll reach your destiny Gone the tears that you have wept Meant to find you all these years You’ll dance in freedom ever after Meant to find you all these years

Prayer of the Day Pastor Arianna Arends, EWU

The grace of our Lord Christ, the love of God, and the of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Let us pray: O God, you give us your Son as the vine apart from whom we cannot live. Nourish our life in his resurrection, that we may bear the fruit of love and know the fullness of your joy, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Word God speaks to us in scripture reading, preaching, and song.

Psalm 22: 25-31

First Reading: 1 John 4:13-21 Katie, UW student

By this we know that we abide in God and God in us, because we have been given of God’s own Spirit. And we have seen and do testify that the Father has sent the Son as the Savior of the world. God abides in those who confess that Jesus is the Son of God, and they abide in God. So we have known and believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and those who abide in love abide in God, and God abides in them. Love has been perfected among us in this: that we may have boldness on the day of judgment, because as the Son is, so are we in this world. There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear; for fear has to do with punishment, and whoev- er fears has not reached perfection in love. We love because God first loved us. Those who say, “I love God,” and hate their brothers or sisters, are liars; for those who do not love a sister or brother whom they have seen, cannot love God whom they have not seen. The commandment we have from God is this: those who love God love their brothers and sisters also. 2 Holy wisdom, holy word. Thanks be to God.

Children’s Message “In the Vineyard” Pastor Chelsea Globe, UW John 15:1-8 [Jesus said:] 1“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinegrower. 2He removes every branch in me that bears no fruit. Every branch that bears fruit he prunes to make it bear more fruit. 3You have already been cleansed by the word that I have spoken to you. 4Abide in me as I abide in you. Just as the branch cannot bear fruit by itself unless it abides in the vine, neither can you unless you abide in me. 5I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. 6Whoever does not abide in me is thrown away like a branch and withers; such branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask for whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8My Father is glorified by this, that you bear much fruit and become my disciples.” The Gospel of our Lord. C Thanks be to God

3 Christ Has Risen John Bell Christ has risen while earth slumbers, Christ has risen where hope died, as he said and as he promised, as we doubted and denied. Let the moon embrace the blessing; let the sun sustain the cheer; let the world confirm the rumor: Christ is risen, God is here!

Christ has risen for the people whom he died to love and save; Christ has risen for the women bringing flowers to grace his grace. Christ has risen for disciples, huddled in an upstairs room. He whose word inspired creation can’t be silenced by the tomb.

Christ has risen to companion former friends who fear the night, sensing loss and limitation where their faith had once burned bright. They bemoan what is no longer, they expect no hopeful sign till Christ ends their conversation, breaking bread and sharing wine.

Christ has risen and forever lives to challenge and to change all whose lives are messed or mangled, all who find religion strange. Christ is risen, Christ is present making us what he has been: evidence of transformation in which God is known and seen.

Communion

Communion Hymn This is Christ’s Body

Lord’s Prayer Deacon Karla Neumann-Smiley, WSU & U of I

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen.

4 Sending God blesses us and sends us in mission to the world.

Blessing and Benediction Pastor Arianna Ahrends, EWU Go now, and love one another, because love is from God. Proclaim God’s salvation to every generation. Remain in Jesus Christ, and like branches of a vine, draw your life from him. And may God the vine grower tend you and make you fruitful; May Christ Jesus abide in you and give you life; And may the Holy Spirit cast out all fear and fill you with God’s love. Amen.
