thinkers linked by time and place but these men had different experiences that led to different con- clusionsclusions about life and hope I1I love all men who dive wrote herman melville to a friend any fish can swim near the surface but it takes a great whale to go down stairs five miles or more & if he dont attain the bottom why all the lead in galena can t fashion the plummet that will im not talking of mr emerson now but of the whole corps of thought divers that have been diving & coming up again with bloodshotblood shot eyes since the world began 1 I1 although herman melville probably never met joseph smith he would have loved him as a thought diver melville said in his review 1850 of nathaniel hawthornerhawthornesHawthornes mosses from an old manse 1846 for genius all over the world stands hand in hand and one shock of recognition runs the whole circle around 2 why might one want to consider herman melville and joseph smith together this juxtaposition helps illuminate striking similarities as well as significant differences in the lives and responses to life of two of the nine- teenth century s most remarkable men both pioneers in their respective fields what editor james G bennett of the new york herald wrote about joseph smith could apply to herman melville as well he was undoubtedly one of the greatest characters of the age 1133 future generations observed josiah quincy the mayor of boston might well identify joseph smith as the american of the nineteenth century who has exerted the most power- ful influence upon the destinies of his countrymen 1145143144 likewise melville s place today as one of the greatest writers of american literature is undis- puted these two contemporaries have given to the world enduring works in the book of mormon 1830 and moby dick 1851 both melville and smith pondered the deep questions of existence such as the relationship of man to god the nature and degree of agency and the purpose of life their writings grew up in new york state melville in albany and smith in palmyra locations separated by more than two hundred miles but connected by the erie canal and V while they were misunderstood and harshly himself as well as hawthorne in mind when he said we think that into no recorded mind has the intense feel- ing of the visible truth ever entered more deeply than into this man s by visible truth we quite persuasively by his use of the name alma for his prophet christ figure in mardi 1849 melville s alma was an illustrious prophet and teacher divine who came to instruct the martiansmardiansMardians in the ways of truth virtue and happiness to allure them to good by promises of beatitude hereafter and to restrain them from evil by denunciations of woe 111414 melville also identified his misunderstood novel mardi with Morcormonsmormonsmons again as the divines say political republics should be the asylum for the persecuted of all nations so if mardi be admitted to your confidence man his masquer- ade 1857 one of the passengers on the steamboat flaefidelepime supposes that the lamblike man in cream colors is a green prophet from utah 111616 at one point in the novel the swindling confidence man tries to interest a colle- gian in the new jerusalem which he says is the new and thriving city so called in northern minnesota it was originally founded by certain fugitive Morcormonsmormonsmons hence the name 1111717 this new and thriving city founded by the cormonsmormons calls to mind nauvoo although the northernly location and the reference to fugitive cormonsmormons may also have reference to an apostate colony at beaver island wisconsin once designated the new jeru- salem by colony leader james J strang whose assassination in 1856 received national attention the narrator of the novel implies skepticism about the city s perpetual fountain and lignum vitsevitae strumsrostrumro s that is 11 the fountain of the water of life and the tree of life in the new jerusalem as described in the book of revelation see rev 211 6 melville might have had in mind as well the new jerusalem and the tree of life described in the book of mormon and the narrator includes Morcormonsmormonsmons and papistspapista in his catalog of the anacharsis cloots congress of all kinds of that multiform

About Us Masthead In their Introduction to this book, Samuel Otter and Geoffrey Sanborn observe that American literary studies divide the practice of aesthetic criticism in two, setting an exclusionary exercise in cultural elitism against an inclusionary view of Feedback "aesthetics as the basis of a radically democratic politics" (2). As presented here, aesthetic criticism does not simply assess what is beautiful or what constitutes high, low, or middle art; it entails an entire value system that informs, as it justifies, those determinate conclusions deriving from a particular hermeneutical process. Twentieth-century aesthetic criticism on Melville, the editors contend, has been limited in range, concentrating primarily on matters related to the sublime, the picturesque, and the slants of light that fall between. In twelve chapters, the editors present disparate critical "experiments" (3) that "reconsider the relationship between aesthetic and political modes of analysis" (5-6). In fusing phenomenological and ideological approaches, the editors do not purport to trace the development of Herman Melville's aesthetics from Typee (1846) to Billy Budd (1924) or to compose a unified body of political criticism.     280 book reviews Niemeyer, Mark (ed.) The Divine Magnet: Herman Melville’s Letters to Nathaniel Hawthorne. Foreword Paul Harding. Asheville nc: Orison Books, 2016. Pp. 105. $18.00, paper. The literary works of Herman Melville and Nathaniel Hawthorne are renowned for—among other things—their narrative complexity and ambiguous symbol- ism. Those who have studied their lives know that a similar sense of mystery characterizes the friendship the two writers shared. Only a handful of their let- ters to each other remain—one remarkably pedestrian letter that Hawthorne wrote to Melville asking him to purchase a kitchen clock for the Hawthorne residence, and ten letters that Melville wrote to his dear friend Hawthorne. This epistolary paucity and the resulting biographical lacunae have produced an array of speculation about the brief, but intense, flashes of insight the few letters provide into the friendship. Certainly it was a relationship character- ized by intellectual fraternity and artistic influence. But some scholars find deeper layers of significance buried within the epistles, including an unre- quited romantic desire that Melville might have felt for Hawthorne and a prolonged estrangement that possibly began while the two corresponded. Of course, as James C. Wilson pointed out years ago, interpreting the friendship by analyzing the Melville-Hawthorne letters is akin to the Pequod’s sailors attempting to analyze the markings on the doubloon nailed to the mast in Moby-Dick—an empirical exercise, but one widely “open to subjective inter- pretation” (24). Nevertheless, Melville’s letters to Hawthorne remain a rich source of infor- mation and possess a literary and philosophical quality on par with their great fiction, all of which Mark Niemeyer highlights in his recent collection, The Divine Magnet: Herman Melville’s Letters to Nathaniel Hawthorne, which includes all ten letters Melville wrote to Hawthorne between January 1851 and December 1852 (he understandably leaves out Hawthorne’s letter to Melville about the clock).

    133 Melville and Hawthorne: A Reinterpretation of Bartleby the Scrivener Junko MATSUMOTO Abstract Herman Melville’s Bartleby, the Scrivener (1853) was composed in a period when Melville was under the strong influence of Nathaniel Hawthorne, whose friendship he valued most, sharing similar aesthetic interests and ideas. When closely examined, the story shows a revealing connection with Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850) in its narrative framework and sequence of episodes. The comparison between the two works suggests that Melville’s original intention was to create a story that would stand in striking contrast to the other. This idea offers a new approach to the author’s mind, adding increased depth and insight into our understanding of his work. Introduction Herman Melville’s Bartleby, the Scrivener was originally published in two installments on November 1 & December 1, 1853, in Putnam’s Monthly Magazine.1 The publisher sent him 85 dollars by check, and that was all the author received for his 17 pages of work (Newman 19). Never could he have known that this short piece would later become one of the most widely-read texts in literature classes, creating what Dan McCall calls the “Bartleby 134 Melville and Hawthorne: A Reinterpretation of Bartleby the Scrivener Industry” (McCall 99). In 1848, five years before Bartleby’s publication, Nathaniel Hawthorne lost his office as the surveyor of the customhouse in Salem, and with it his annual salary of $1,500 ― due to the change of administration in Washington. Two years later, his Scarlet Letter was published. It became an instant bestseller, earning him a total of $1,500 over 14 years.

    AHAB’S ARITHMETIC; OR, THE MATHEMATICS OF MOBY-DICK Sarah Hart; Birkbeck College, University of London; [email protected] Abstract Herman Melville’s novel Moby-Dick contains a surprising number of mathematical allusions. In this article we explore some of these, as well as discussing the questions that naturally follow: why did Melville choose to use so much mathematical imagery? How did Melville come to acquire the level of mathematical knowledge shown in the novel? And is it commensurate with the general level of mathematical literacy at that time? 1. Introduction Moby-Dick is one of the most famous novels ever written. ‘It is a surpassingly beautiful book,’ wrote D.H. Lawrence in 1922. ‘It is a great book, a very great book, the greatest book of the sea ever written. It moves awe in the soul.’ Melville deploys a vast array of literary, cultural and religious references, symbolism and imagery. Figure 1: Title page of the first edition of Moby-Dick, 1851 (Beinecke Library, Yale University) Any mathematician reading Moby-Dick would be struck, as I was, by the number of mathematical references, and evident mathematical knowledge, shown by that book (several examples will be given in this paper). But is the number of mathematical references really unusual? What were contemporary authors doing and saying? Was Melville especially mathematical? If so, why? I will argue that yes, Melville was indeed atypical in his level of mathematical knowledge, and moreover that he evidently enjoyed mathematics and was good at it. The main motivation for this article is to explore these questions, but it is hoped that the examples and quotations discussed could also be useful pedagogically, as a way for educators to contextualise some of the mathematics which is referenced.
