FILM Moby-Dick (1851) Herman Melville (1819-1891) adaptation by Ray Bradbury & John Huston (1956) ANALYSIS Moby-Dick is the greatest American novel. This is the only film adaptation that is faithful to the book. All other movie versions are ridiculous. The only improvement any of them has made over this adaptation is in special effects—more spectacular shots of the white whale underwater. These are entertaining to see, but they add nothing to understanding and actually distract from the meanings of the book. Movie critics have been especially stupid in responding to this film. Ray Bradbury is a discerning writer who is largely true to Melville and John Huston was the most literary director in Hollywood. Contrary to the critics, the casting is perfect—especially Gregory Peck as Captain Ahab. Queequeg is also brilliantly portrayed. Unlike their critics Bradbury and Huston display a deep knowledge of the book, although they are limited in how much of it they can present in a film. They are able to include significant lines of dialogue that are over the heads of movie critics, such as the Pequod as a symbol of the world, expressed when Orson Welles as Father Mapple dresses like a sea captain, preaches from a pulpit in the form of a ship’s prow and refers to everyone in the world as “Shipmates.” They also convey the pantheistic divinity of Moby-Dick, who seems to be everywhere in the world at once. As Pip says, “That a great white god.” They establish that the story is a psychological allegory when Ishmael says that the sea is a “mirror” of himself. -
Mistranslations of the Prophets' Names in the Holy Quran: a Critical Evaluation of Two Translations

I. Issa Dept. of English & Translation, Jadara University, PO box 733, Irbid, Jordan Abstract This study is devoted to discuss the renditions of the prophets' names in the Holy Quran due to the authority of the religious text where they reappear, the significance of the figures who carry them, the fact that they exist in many languages, and the fact that the Holy Quran addresses all mankind. The data are drawn from two translations of the Holy Quran by Ali (1964), and Al-Hilali and Khan (1993). It examines the renditions of the twenty five prophets' names with reference to translation strategies in this respect, showing that Ali confused the conveyance of six names whereas Al-Hilali and Khan confused the conveyance of four names. Discussion has been raised thereupon to present the correct rendition according to English dictionaries and encyclopedias in addition to versions of the Bible which add a historical perspective to the study. Introduction In Prophets’ names comprise a significant part of people's names which in turn constitutes a main subdivision of proper nouns which include in addition to people's names the names of countries, places, months, days, holidays etc. In terms of translation, many translators opt for transliterating proper names thinking that transliteration is a straightforward process depending on an idea deeply rooted in many people's minds that proper nouns are never translated or that the translation of proper names is as Vermes (2003:17) states "a simple automatic process of transference from one language to another." Moby Dick By Herman Melville Chapter 8: The Pulpit I had not been seated very long ere a man of a certain venerable robustness entered; immediately as the storm-pelted door flew back upon admitting him, a quick regardful eyeing of him by all the congregation, sufficiently attested that this fine old man was the chaplain. Yes, it was the famous Father Mapple, so called by the whalemen, among whom he was a very great favorite. He had been a sailor and a harpooneer in his youth, but for many years past had dedicated his life to the ministry. At the time I now write of, Father Mapple was in the hardy winter of a healthy old age; that sort of old age which seems merging into a second flowering youth, for among all the fissures of his wrinkles, there shone certain mild gleams of a newly developing bloom- the spring verdure peeping forth even beneath February’s snow. No one having previously heard his history, could for the first time behold Father Mapple without the utmost interest, because there were certain engrafted clerical peculiarities about him, imputable to that adventurous maritime life he had led. When he entered I observed that he carried no umbrella, and certainly had not come in his carriage, for his tarpaulin hat ran down with melting sleet, and his great pilot cloth jacket seemed almost to drag him to the floor with the weight of the water it had absorbed. However, hat and coat and overshoes were one by one removed, and hung up in a little space in an adjacent corner; when, arrayed in a decent suit, he quietly approached the pulpit. -

Isaac and Ishmael, 1985
This was the first High Holy Day sermon I delivered as the new young rabbi at UCSB Hillel in 1985. It was in many ways a classic “rabbinic school sermon,” full of textual analysis…and way too long. It was also a bold attempt to address the sensitive subject of the Arab-Israeli conflict; I remember seeing one of the prominent Jewish professors get up and walk out in the middle! (He has since become a dearly beloved friend). Issac and Ishmael 1985 Rosh HaShanah, UCSB Hillel This morning we read of the exile of Hagar and Ishmael, what the rabbis later called the most painful moment of Abraham’s life. The portion speaks to us directly in a way that it did not for hundreds of years, because the conflict between the children of Isaac, the Jews, and the children of Ishmael, the Arabs, has become the central fact of Jewish life in the second half of this century. The emotional strain of this conflict is par- ticularly terrible because, just as in the biblical story of Hagar and Ishmael, it is exceed- ingly difficult to sort out the rights and wrongs. In fact, it is difficult to escape the conclu- sion that--on certain levels--we, like Sarah, have morally compromised ourselves in this family conflict. The question which this text throws back at us year after year--and with particular vehemence in our generation--is: Can there be peace between Isaac and Ish- mael? Or was it necessary, is it necessary, for Abraham’s house to be broken apart? To most difficult questions, the textual tradition does not offer solution. -

ISHMAEL: Hmmm. Looks too jolly—and, therefore, too expensive. NARRATOR: Moving on, I saw a swinging sign over a door with a white, tall straight jet of misty spray painted on it. The project, which brings three trusted wardens of the community’s history together aims to document this remarkable period in history and the many ways in which the global health crisis has impacted the region. “This pandemic is an historic chapter in human history which will be remembered and studied for generations to come,” explained Jeff Rodgers, Executive Director at the Berkshire Museum. “We have lost friends and loved ones and seen our daily lives and livelihoods upended.
