2016 International WFTDA Championships Digital Program WELCOME 2016 International WFTDA Championships On behalf of the WFTDA Board of Directors, Officers, and staff, I am excited to welcome you to the 2016 International WFTDA Championships. Nothing compares to being here. Plain and simple. The fantastic feats of athleticism on the track, the excitement and emotion in the stands, the concentration and attention to detail on the dais, and the enticing goods in the vendor village. This is roller derby. We are roller derby. So who will you be today? Will you be persistent and powerful, strong and swift, a leader on the track? Will you be fierce and fast and forceful, a goal setter…a record breaker? Will you be focused and creative? Will you capture that amazing shot? Will you paint your face and put on your colors? Will you chant and sing and cry and scream? One thing is clear—whether you’re a Skater, Official, photographer, announcer, or fan (or any combination thereof), TODAY YOU WILL BE ROLLER DERBY! This weekend wouldn’t be possible without the tremendous amount of support and time our hosts, Rose City Rollers, and all of their volunteers have put in. When you see their event staff, be sure to thank them for hosting such a fantastic tournament. Enjoy your time in Portland and we’ll see you ‘round the track! Alisha Campbell WFTDA TOURNAMENTS DIRECTOR 2 FROM YOUR HOST WELCOME FROM THE ROSE CITY ROLLERS Welcome to Portland, Oregon! The Rose City Rollers are excited that you are here and stoked to be hosting the WFTDA Championship Tournament this year! Our tournament is being held at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum, part of the Rose Quarter complex and home of the Portland Trailblazers. This complex is centrally located in Portland, near shops and restaurants and an easy light rail ride from beautiful downtown Portland. Around the area you will find plenty of coffee shops, cafes, and bars as well as a whole bunch of shops to meet your traveling needs. Portland is becoming quite the travel destination these days, what with our mild climate and “keep it weird” attitude. We are proud to be in the Pacific Northwest, home of evergreen trees, lumberjacks, and grunge music. The Rose City Rollers hope that you have an amazing time while in our town and encourage you to stick around after this weekend and check out some of what we have to offer. From waterfalls in the Columbia River Gorge to Powells Books, we really do have it all. ABOUT THE ROSE CITY ROLLERS Rose City was founded in August 2004 by a small group of gritty, gutsy, and nostalgic gals who decided to dust off their quad skates and hit the rink. From those humble beginnings, Rose City has become the largest roller derby league in the world with over 500 active skating members, including an awesome junior derby program, and hundreds of volunteers and support staff. And we wouldn’t be true to ourselves if we didn’t mention that we are the current WFTDA Champs, bringing the Hydra trophy home in 2015! • Roller Derby: Past, Present, Future RESEARCH PAPER for ASU’S Global Sport Institute
Devoney Looser, Foundation Professor of English Department of English, Arizona State University Tempe, AZ 85287-1401 [email protected] Roller Derby: Past, Present, Future RESEARCH PAPER for ASU’s Global Sport Institute SUMMARY Is roller derby a sport? Okay, sure, but, “Is it a legitimate sport?” No matter how you’re disposed to answer these questions, chances are that you’re asking without a firm grasp of roller derby’s past or present. Knowledge of both is crucial to understanding, or predicting, what derby’s future might look like in Sport 2036. From its official origins in Chicago in 1935, to its rebirth in Austin, TX in 2001, roller derby has been an outlier sport in ways admirable and not. It has long been ahead of the curve on diversity and inclusivity, a little-known fact. Even players and fans who are diehard devotees—who live and breathe by derby—have little knowledge of how the sport began, how it was different, or why knowing all of that might matter. In this paper, which is part of a book-in-progress, I offer a sense of the following: 1) why roller derby’s past and present, especially its unusual origins, its envelope-pushing play and players, and its waxing and waning popularity, matters to its future; 2) how roller derby’s cultural reputation (which grew out of roller skating’s reputation) has had an impact on its status as an American sport; 3) how roller derby’s economic history, from family business to skater-owned-and- operated non-profits, has shaped opportunity and growth; and 4) why the sport’s past, present, and future inclusivity, diversity, and counter-cultural aspects resonate so deeply with those who play and watch.

Book of Abstracts North American Society for the Sociology of Sport 2017 Annual Conference Windsor, Ontario, Canada November 1-4 Age Matters: Canadian Hockey-style Masculinity Comes to Curling Kristi Allain, St Thomas University As Canadian baby boomers reach retirement age and the country becomes increasingly defined by its old(er) citizens, it is surprisingly rare to see the bodies of old(er) men on sports channels and in the newspapers’ sports sections. Men’s curlers have been a noteworthy exception to this trend. Men’s curling — with its focus on older men, hospitality, affability, and a lack of physical exertion — has always stood apart from men’s hockey — which often privileges aggressive and violent masculinity. However, since the Sochi Olympics, when the media heralded the curlers on Team Jacobs for bringing to curling a young, muscular style, a troubling shift has taken place. I argue that media representations of curling draw on both the language and values of Canadian hockey-style masculinity, showing how this results in the problematic erasure of curling’s once-unique form of Canadian sports masculinity. I discuss how curling and hockey connect to the Canadian consciousness and construct the nation as white and male. I then explain how curling’s privileging of non-athletic qualities such as sociability, makes it unique among Canadian sports. Thus, the emerging media discourse, which applies the norms of hockey masculinity to male curlers, demonstrates a complex social reordering of popular understandings of men who curl, and a “sweeping away” of an older, less aggressive masculinity. The Paradox of Professionalism: Elite Women Athletes Negotiate Gender Inequality in Sport Rachel Allison, Mississippi State University Based on interviews with 20 U.S.

  • Roller Derby Changed My Life’: Rethinking Marxist Theory of Emancipatory Praxis Through a Case Study of Women’S Flat-Track Roller Derby
91,500 words ‘Roller derby changed my life’: Rethinking Marxist theory of emancipatory praxis through a case study of women’s flat-track roller derby Polly Lisa Bennett (nee Lisa Farrance) B Social Science (RMIT University) MA Global Media Communication (University of Melbourne) November 2020 Institute of Sustainable Industries and Liveable Cities Victoria University Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Roller derby and emancipatory praxis 2 Abstract This thesis develops upon theories of alienation, social reproduction, ideology and emancipation through a study of how roller derby changes skaters’ lives. The thesis focuses on research participants’ experiences of their bodies within a women-led sport that rejects mainstream conceptions of femininity. It demonstrates how a reimagining of the body through physical activity in an alternative, liberating and mutually-supportive subculture can lead to a renewed sense of power and a rejection of internalised ideological constraints. The thesis describes a five-year, ethnographic case study of roller derby in and around Melbourne, Australia. The thesis draws upon observation of major events, and in-depth interviews with a selection of local skaters and visiting international coaches and organisers, all of whom identified with the saying ‘roller derby changed my life’. The skaters’ life changes are various: leaving abusive relationships; coming out as same-sex attracted or transgender; changing their appreciation for their bodies; or ‘finally finding myself’. The thesis asks, why? It discovered several, inter-connected responses. First, freedom and fulfilment come from becoming physically strong but also competent in a technically difficult sport. Skaters coming to understand what the body can do, for the first time in their lives, is common even to those starting out.
