  • Puberty in Crisis
    |Puberty in Crisis Puberty has long been recognised as a difficult and upsetting process for individuals and families, but it is now also being widely described as in crisis. Reportedly occurring earlier and earlier as each decade of the twenty-first century passes, sexual development now heralds new forms of temporal trouble in which sexuality, sex/gender and reproduction are all at stake. Many believe that children are growing up too fast and becoming sexual too early. Clinicians, parents and teachers all demand something must be done. Does this out-of-time development indicate that children’s futures are at risk or that we are entering a new era of environmental and social perturbation? Engaging with a diverse range of contemporary femi- nist and social theories on the body, biology and sex, Celia Roberts urges us to refuse a discourse of crisis and to rethink puberty as a combination of biological, psychological and social forces. CELIA ROBERTS is Senior Lecturer and Co-director of the Centre for Gender and Women’s Studies in the Department of Sociology at Lancaster University. • The Present Elsewhere: Theorizing an Aesthetics of Displacement in Contemporary African American and Postcolonial Literatures
THE PRESENT ELSEWHERE: THEORIZING AN AESTHETICS OF DISPLACEMENT IN CONTEMPORARY AFRICAN AMERICAN AND POSTCOLONIAL LITERATURES Mary Alice Kirkpatrick A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature. Chapel Hill 2010 Approved by: Minrose Gwin William L. Andrews Pamela Cooper Rebecka Rutledge Fisher Trudier Harris © 2010 Mary Alice Kirkpatrick ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Mary Alice Kirkpatrick: The Present Elsewhere: Theorizing an Aesthetics of Displacement in Contemporary African American and Postcolonial Literatures (Under the direction of Minrose Gwin) “The Present Elsewhere” investigates the aesthetic traits and political implications of displacement in contemporary African American, Caribbean, and Canadian works. Arguing that displacement resonates textually, I interrogate the degree to which artists purposely leave their works in states of flux. Framed through the lens of nomadic, transitional figures (including diasporic cultural orphans, child clairvoyants, and reincarnated ghosts), this project develops the notion of an aesthetics of displacement – that is to say, an aesthetics informed by political urgency. Writers such as Michael Ondaatje, Toni Cade Bambara, and Octavia Butler rearrange customary geographic and chronological placements, unsettle narrative lines, and challenge shared histories of oppression. Propelled into active engagement, readers are encouraged to adopt new roles as migrants and witnesses. The political significance of works that displace radiates externally, as readers are directed toward sites of change well beyond the confines of individual texts. By bringing together seemingly divergent traditions, “The Present Elsewhere” examines the specific historical conditions, cultural backgrounds, and geographic contexts that produce sites of displacement within the Caribbean island, U.

BRIDGING ASPECTS OF RHYTHM AND PROSE FICTION AND DEMI-GODS Eliza Robertson A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2017 © Eliza Robertson 2017 All Rights Reserved 2 Abstract My novel, Demi-Gods, begins when nine-year-old Willa meets Patrick, eleven, in 1950. Patrick is visiting their Salt Spring Island beach house from San Diego. On the first morning, Willa follows him to the beach, where he coaxes her into a dilapidated rowboat. Their cruise ends when she is stung by a jellyfish and Patrick convinces her to urinate on herself. This transaction, in which Patrick asserts authority over her body and she complies, cinches a knot of power between them. As the years proceed, this bond thickens. It’s not until later that she realizes their relationship is essentially self-effacing. Willa has never felt exalted under anyone else’s gaze, and Patrick has never felt as powerful. The knot of power has altered them both. Rather than explore my creative practice thematically, I have found it more fruitful to unpack a concept central to the novel’s form and formation: rhythm. My thesis seeks to understand that centrality—how rhythm initiates and sustains my writing and fiction more broadly. Before Plato emphasized the link between rhuthmos (ρυθμός) and metron (μέτρον), rhythm signified a fluid or flowing form. The first chapter contrasts two traditional metaphors for rhythm, rheos vs. cadentibus guttis. By tracing the etymology of rhuthmos, I find these metaphors are not mutually exclusive. In the second chapter, I question the metaphors we use to identify “presence” in prose fiction.

MAKING A WORLD FOR AMERICA: ELECTRIC COMMUNICATION, EXPANSIVE PROTESTANTISM, AND GLOBALIZATION IN THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Jenna Supp-Montgomerie A dissertation submitted to the faculty of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Ph.D. in the Department of Religious Studies. Chapel Hill 2013 Approved by: Randall Styers Jason Bivins Lawrence Grossberg Christian Lundberg Laurie Maffly-Kipp Grant Wacker ©2013 Jenna Supp-Montgomerie ALL RIGHTS RESERVED iv ABSTRACT JENNA SUPP-MONTGOMERIE: Making a World for America: Electric Communication, Expansive Protestantism, and Globalization in the Nineteenth Century (Under the direction of Randall Styers) On August 12, 1858, the Atlantic Telegraph Cable was laid across the ocean from the west coast of Ireland to Newfoundland, Canada. Claims that distance had been annihilated, peace was imminent, and the world would unite through this new medium for intercontinental communication took America by storm. These promises of unity were particularly strange because the cable failed after only twenty-three days, colonial conflict rocked the world, and the Civil War loomed. This study explores this early form of globalization in America at the advent of the first opportunity for Americans to communicate with Europe in a matter of hours rather than weeks. The “world” is not a given or natural entity. Americans in the mid-nineteenth century produced a modern global imaginary: a constellation of symbols, meanings, practices, and material objects that was structured and sustained in dynamic form by practices of variable affective investment that shaped how Americans conceived of and lived in the world.

H.P. Lovecraft's Literary "Supernatural Horror" in Visual Culture A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Nathaniel R Wallace December 2014 © 2014 Nathaniel R Wallace. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled H.P. Lovecraft's Literary "Supernatural Horror" in Visual Culture by NATHANIEL R. WALLACE has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Charles Buchanan Associate Professor of Interdisciplinary Arts Margaret Kennedy-Dygas Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT WALLACE, NATHANIEL R., Ph.D., December 2014, Interdisciplinary Arts Lovecraft's Literary "Supernatural Horror" in Visual Culture Director of Dissertation: Charles Buchanan H.P. Lovecraft, an early twentieth-century author of supernatural horror, was a materialist who believed that science had diminished the mysteries that previously existed in everyday life. To counteract this development, he felt that the arts could be a viable platform where reality, especially the dimensions of time and space, might be disrupted. His literary approach in achieving this effect was to introduce phenomena to the audience that were complex and vast in scope, potentially creating a sense of the sublime. Two particular elements that characterize such disruptive phenomena are repetition and symmetry. This dissertation considers Lovecraft’s aesthetic theories and his larger body of work in order to establish a theoretical framework concerning disruption which can be applied to visual culture. As a self-described “visually minded” author, Lovecraft’s literary approach bears a close relationship to visual culture, since he often appropriated existing artistic works and incorporated them through description within his literature.
