Jean-Luc Nancy and the Deconstruction of Christianity by Tenzan Eaghll A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto ©Copyright by Tenzan Eaghll 2016 Jean-Luc Nancy and the Deconstruction of Christianity Tenzan Eaghll Doctor of Philosophy Department for the Study of Religion University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a study of the origins and development of the French philosopher Jean- Luc Nancy’s work on the “deconstruction of Christianity.” By situating Nancy's work in light of the broader Continental philosophical analysis of religion in the 20th Century, it argues that what Nancy calls the "deconstruction of Christianity" and the "exit from religion" is his unique intervention into the problem of metaphysical nihilism in Western thought. The author explains that Nancy’s work on religion does not provide a new “theory” for the study of religion or Christianity, but shows how Western metaphysical foundations are caught up in a process of decomposition that has been brought about by Christianity. For Nancy, the only way out of nihilism is to think of the world as an infinite opening unto itself, for this dis- encloses any transcendent principle of value or immanent notion of meaninglessness in the finite spacing of sense, and he finds the resources to think this opening within Christianity. By reading Christian notions like "God" and "creation ex nihilo" along deconstructive lines and connecting them with the rise and fall of this civilization that once called itself "Christendom," he attempts to expose "the sense of an absenting" that is both the condition of possibility for the West and what precedes, succeeds, and exceeds it. -

Any art historian, philosopher of art, or theorist of the visual who is concerned with issues of historiography and interpretation above and beyond a particular chronological specialization, will undoubtedly be familiar with Martin Heidegger’s writings. Heidegger’s best-known contribution to the history of art, his 1935–36 essay ‘Origin of the Work of Art’, calls into question the essence of the artwork, the status of the artist as originary creator, and thus, the stability of the artwork’s meaning. It is here that Heidegger challenges the notion of intentionality as a meaning bestowed by the artist to the work of art and in so doing repositions the notion of intentionality altogether, from the work of art’s inherent content to the path of questioning that the work elicits. Further, Heidegger refutes the method of comparison, already an established approach to situating works of art in a particular place in history. Instead, he posits hermeneutic movement as an access into the fundamental terms that constitute the work of art in a time and place: its origin, materiality (or thingliness), its status as a ‘work’, and its operation of setting up a world. In short, the essay stands as an imperative to both ask the essential questions of artworks and scrutinize our ways of interpreting them for our own time. |Puberty in Crisis Puberty has long been recognised as a difficult and upsetting process for individuals and families, but it is now also being widely described as in crisis. Reportedly occurring earlier and earlier as each decade of the twenty-first century passes, sexual development now heralds new forms of temporal trouble in which sexuality, sex/gender and reproduction are all at stake. Many believe that children are growing up too fast and becoming sexual too early. Clinicians, parents and teachers all demand something must be done. Does this out-of-time development indicate that children’s futures are at risk or that we are entering a new era of environmental and social perturbation? Engaging with a diverse range of contemporary femi- nist and social theories on the body, biology and sex, Celia Roberts urges us to refuse a discourse of crisis and to rethink puberty as a combination of biological, psychological and social forces. Arguing that displacement resonates textually, I interrogate the degree to which artists purposely leave their works in states of flux. Framed through the lens of nomadic, transitional figures (including diasporic cultural orphans, child clairvoyants, and reincarnated ghosts), this project develops the notion of an aesthetics of displacement – that is to say, an aesthetics informed by political urgency. Writers such as Michael Ondaatje, Toni Cade Bambara, and Octavia Butler rearrange customary geographic and chronological placements, unsettle narrative lines, and challenge shared histories of oppression. Propelled into active engagement, readers are encouraged to adopt new roles as migrants and witnesses. The political significance of works that displace radiates externally, as readers are directed toward sites of change well beyond the confines of individual texts. BRIDGING ASPECTS OF RHYTHM AND PROSE FICTION AND DEMI-GODS Eliza Robertson A thesis submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy March 2017 © Eliza Robertson 2017 All Rights Reserved 2 Abstract My novel, Demi-Gods, begins when nine-year-old Willa meets Patrick, eleven, in 1950. Patrick is visiting their Salt Spring Island beach house from San Diego. On the first morning, Willa follows him to the beach, where he coaxes her into a dilapidated rowboat. Their cruise ends when she is stung by a jellyfish and Patrick convinces her to urinate on herself. This transaction, in which Patrick asserts authority over her body and she complies, cinches a knot of power between them. As the years proceed, this bond thickens. It’s not until later that she realizes their relationship is essentially self-effacing. Willa has never felt exalted under anyone else’s gaze, and Patrick has never felt as powerful. The knot of power has altered them both. Rather than explore my creative practice thematically, I have found it more fruitful to unpack a concept central to the novel’s form and formation: rhythm. My thesis seeks to understand that centrality—how rhythm initiates and sustains my writing and fiction more broadly. Before Plato emphasized the link between rhuthmos (ρυθμός) and metron (μέτρον), rhythm signified a fluid or flowing form. The first chapter contrasts two traditional metaphors for rhythm, rheos vs. cadentibus guttis. By tracing the etymology of rhuthmos, I find these metaphors are not mutually exclusive. In the second chapter, I question the metaphors we use to identify “presence” in prose fiction.
