Wine Cellar 1: New World Wines Lots #300 Lot #301 2004 MAJELLA ”THE MALLEEA” Value: $720 Six 750 ml bottles. ”The Malleea” by Majella is recognized as one of Australia’s great collectible wines. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz from the famous Coonawarra wine region in South Australia, the wine has been included in the Langton’s Classification of Australia Wines for many years. ”The Malleea” is regarded by many as the perfect example of ”The Great Australian Blend.” This 2004 sample has been selected by winemaker Bruce Gregory from the Majella wine museum, and he suggests the wine could be aged for another 10 years or so before drinking. Five bottles of Black Label: a powerful expression of the Wolf Blass philosophy of synergistic blending, Black Label is built on persistence of flavour, seamless texture and long, velvety tannins, with opulent yet elegant fruit from the Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale providing richness, depth and exceptional complexity. The Vicar is Chapel Hill’s flagship wine and is an annual vineyard selection of Chapel Hill’s most outstanding and expressive parcels of McLaren Vale Shiraz. This wine is intended to embody the commitment to McLaren Vale and its regal and noble variety in their belief in minimal intervention winemaking. 100% Shiraz, 100% McLaren Vale. Matured for 20 months in French oak. Charismatic layers of blueberry, roasted fennel seeds and cured meats, seamlessly interwoven into the firm but poised savoury texture. The synergistic balance of the cascading layers of varietal flavour, palate weight, tannin and acidity will ensure that the wine will develop further complexity over the next 15 to 20 years. A set of four limited-edition Kings Series magnums from world renowned wine company Marisco Vineyards – home of The Ned. Signed by Brent Marris, owner and winemaker of Marisco Vineyards and The Ned. Brent is one of New Zealand’s leading winemakers and has received international accolades for his outstanding ability to create wines of exceptional quality. Bodega Colomé is located in northern Argentina, in the province of Salta. This selection of high altitude Malbecs showcases the wonderful expressions the Malbec grape can achieve at higher elevations. Each of these selections reveal the rich fruit, complexity and intense flavour that high-altitude Malbecs in Argentina can produce. This selection includes the 2009 Amano, the 2010 Malbec and the 2011 Cabernet Sauvignon from Decero. The Amano has complex aromas and flavours from the violets of the Malbec to the dark fruit flavours of the Cabernet Sauvignon. The Malbec features a core intensity of red fruit flavours and lifted violet aromas that remain the signature of Malbec from the Remolinos Vineyard in Argentina, exquisitely balanced by freshness of acidity and an elegant integration of French oak. The Cabernet Sauvignon is defined by its taut dark fruit and cassis flavours with a hint of graphite. Layers of bold tannins and a long, complex finish. Luigi Bosca is Argentina’s oldest family-owned winery whose CEO Alberto Arizu is heralded as a visionary. Exemplified in this wine, the DOC Malbec, which is one of the first appellation-controlled vineyards in the country. His effort is to create quality control and understanding of local terroir in Argentina and this stunning Malbec is a fabulous ambassador of the program. Consistently scoring above 90 points from all major critics, this wine is ready to drink or may be aged up to 10 years. This Maipo Valley Cabernet has received high praise from many wine critics and has won numerous international wine awards. The handpicked grapes come from a specific lot in a vineyard planted in 1957. The wisdom of the vines endows the wine with deep flavours, balance, and concentration. Donated by: Carmen Vineyards Lot #311 2009 PANGEA SYRAH Value: $800 Two 3 L bottles. Originating from the exclusive zone of Apalta in the Colchagua Valley, this wine brings together the vision, experience and philosophy of two prominent winemakers with two very different visions: John Duval, one of Australia’s most acclaimed winemakers of Penfold’s fame, and Felipe Tosso, chief winemaker at Viña Ventisquero. A Syrah distinguished by complex flavours and aromas that mesh together to create something extraordinary. Pangea is full-bodied with noteworthy concentration. It is aged for 18 months in French oak barrels, then in bottle for another year. This imparts balance and brings into focus all the purity, vivacity and elegance of our Apalta fruit. Donated by: Viña Ventisquero Lot #312 2001 CONCHA Y TORO MERLOT Value: $300 One 5 L bottle. Concha y Toro has made a big, burly Merlot with mass appeal given how rich, extracted and oaky it is. The nose is dense as chocolate cake and deep as a well. The mouth is chewy and thick, with chocolate-covered berries and another whack of wood. The Gruet family, already well-established making Champagne since 1952 in France, knew a few European winemakers who had started vineyards in New Mexico with pleasing results. So they visited the state and realized it had an ideal climate for growing grapes. In 1983, the Gruets purchased a vineyard near the Elephant Butte Reservoir and expanded their legacy to the US. The Russian River Valley provides a climate that is ideal for growing Burgundian style wines. This cool region in Sonoma County allows the grapes to maintain their acidity and balance. The 1998 Pinot Noir shows deep nuances of raspberry and bright fruits. The elegant oak is well integrated and hints of cinnamon and clove add complexity. Overall, James Laube of Wine Spectator rates the wines as 5-star in his book, California Wine. This is an opportunity to try a Napa legend … donated from the estate of John Levine, founder of the wine festival, who had a legendary cellar. Dense currant and black cherry fruit are framed by heady cedar, vanilla and spice aromas and flavours. Drinking more like a Right Bank Bordeaux than a Merlot from Napa Valley. Recommended to decant for an hour prior to enjoyment.
