7 Agricultural Practices Some of the wineries represented by Monterey Bay Wine Company have chosen to grow their grapes natu- rally, without the aid of synthetic chemicals or genetically modified organisms. “Sustainable farming” refers to the ability of a farm to produce food indefinitely, without causing damage to ecosystem health. Biody- namic agriculture perceives the farm as an organism, a self-contained entity with its own individuality, and eschews the use of artificial chemicals on soil and plants. Organic farmers rely on crop rotation, integrated pest management, crop residues, animal manures and mechanical cultivation to maintain soil productivity. In addition, several wines are Certified Organic by CCOF, Organic Certifiers or Demeter Certified Biodynamic.

9 Richard and Mary Kay Alfaro acquired an aging 75 acre apple farm in Corralitos south of Santa Cruz, which they subsequently transformed into Alfaro Family Vineyards & Winery. With 56 acres current- ly under vine, the most recently planted eight acres were CCOF Certified Organic in 2010. The hillside vineyards are located less than four miles from the cooling influence of the Monterey Bay, at the south- ern end of the Santa Cruz Mountains appellation.

As a curator of the brightest talent, best vineyards and the divining rod of winning concepts at Precept Wine, where he serves as its CEO, his groundbreaking feats across the wine industry carry through to his own family legacy in wine, Browne Family. Throughout his 20-year career ascent in the wine industry, he was laying the foundation for his namesake family winery which he founded in 2005. Inspired by the greatness of one man - his grandfather, William Bitner Browne - integrity and excellence are the standards upon which Browne wines are created.

Côte Bonneville was founded in 2001 to create wines that best express the spectacular site each year. Combining traditional techniques with cutting edge science, our winemaker Kerry Shiels crafts estate-grown DuBrul Vineyard grapes into beautifully balanced world class wines. 16 Limited production single vineyard Malbec handcrafted by renown wine- maker, Jesse Katz. Devil Proof has been named “cult wine of the year” and is the highest rated 100% Malbec from California from Robert Parker, Wine Spectator and Wine Enthusiast and rated in the top 100 wines by Virginie Boone of Wine Enthusiast. Jesse’s photographer father, Andy Katz, captured the black and white photograph, which graces the label, of a Cuban woman smoking a cigar. The name Devil Proof comes from the Cuban theory that if you live well and drink well, then the devil can’t get you.

18 In 1998, inspired by the majesty of the wild Sonoma Coast, Linda and Lester Schwartz began planting the Fort Ross Vineyard, which clings to the steep rugged coastal ridges. The cool maritime climate of the Fort Ross-Seaview AVA allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly to create wines with vibrant fruit, structure, balance and finesse. Annual production is limited to approximately 5000 cases as they use only estate grown grapes from the single 55-acre vineyard. Since 2009 they have worked close- ly with their esteemed winemaker, Jeff Pisoni, to masterfully craft profound wines that express the unique terroir of this exceptional vineyard that lies high above the coastal fog.

Winegrowers/Proprietors John Hilliard and Christine Bruce purchased their 101 acre Sta. Rita Hills estate in 2002. Determined to pursue their collective dream of cultivating a S.I.P. certified vineyard, in 2004 they planted 16 acres to Pinot Noir and 5 acres of Chardonnay and now oversee every step of wine growing, production, promotion and sales.

Winery Consultant Greg Brewer’s 25 year career has been espoused solely to the Sta. Rita Hills which he helped to map and establish in 1997. 24 LIOCO was conceived in the alley behind Spago Beverly HIlls in 2005 by wine director Kevin O’Connor and wine salesman Matt Licklider. Their interest was in making some local wines that fa- vored nuance over power - an approach that placed them at the vanguard of the New California Wine movement. Today the win- ery is owned by Matt & Sara Licklider, who along with their small team produce the wines in a warehouse in Santa Rosa. All of the fruit is contracted from premier vineyards in Santa Cruz, Sonoma, and Mendocino with a focus on sites with older vines, interesting soil, and heritage clones.

The Basque Blend was conceived after winemaker, Deborah Elissaga- ray, travelled with her family back to the French Pyrenees to the vil- lage where her father was born. Made in collaboration with husband and master blender Greg Stokes of Ursa Vineyards; D’Elissagaray is a unique approach to the time honored style of Basque wine. Though there are vintage variations, the Basque Blend is always made with vari- etals native to the South of France, created in California and reflective of the tradition in the Pyrenees.
