Syllabus for English 200: Introduction to Literature Section 001 Instructor: Billy Longino Semester: Spring 2015 email: [email protected] Location: Ferguson 181 Office: LAN 328 Time: MWF 10:00 – 10:50 Office Hours: M/W/F 9:00 – 10:00; Tues 1:30 – 3:30; or by appointment Course Description English 200: Introduction to Literature is an introductory level literature course designed with the goal to aid students, who may not be familiar or versed in the various genres of literature, in acquiring the skills necessary to engage, understand, critically analyze, and (hopefully!) enjoy the literary genres of the shorty story, poetry, the novel, drama, and the graphic novel. As they read a range of works belonging to these genres, students will explore the basic concepts of literary technique, narrative, poetic, and dramatic structures and innovations, and begin to engage with the more advanced cognitive aspects of literature. In addition to these theoretical skills, students will also read below the surface of the texts in this class for their historical, ethical, psychological, social, and philosophical value, developing insight in how literature gives us a window into both the experiences of others and wider appreciation for the human condition. In addition, through assignments in class (quizzes, exams, essays, and discussions) students will learn how to intelligently respond to the sometimes complicated concepts found in works of literature. The goal here is for students to be able to take skills of critical thought beyond engagement with literature only into their wider interactions with an increasingly complicated world, which of course will continue to be reflected in the human output of literary works.

Six of Crows / / Leigh Bardugo by Sara Frunzi Six of Crows is about a band of teenagers in a gang, with its ringleader being seventeen year-old Kaz Brekker. Kaz gets called upon by a councilman to save a prisoner from Fjerda, a notoriously cold and unforgiving country, which has the most impenetrable prison known to the world. No one has ever broken into it, until now. Kaz assembles a group of allies to go with him to kidnap the scientist. If they fail, there will be grave consequences on the world, causing anyone with magic to be able to heighten their powers beyond the laws of this world. Plot Sequence What is Plot Sequence? Plot sequence is how a story?s time line goes along, showing different snippets and sections of the story. Six of Crows has a nonlinear plot sequence, meaning that the time line switches around. • A Comprehensive Guide to the Book Adaptations Coming to Various Screens in 2020
A COMPREHENSIVE GUIDE TO THE BOOK ADAPTATIONS COMING TO VARIOUS SCREENS IN 2020 Emily Wenstrom Dec 31, 2019 https://bookriot.com/2019/12/31/book-adaptations-2020/ Books have always made for great movies, because hey, a good story is a good story. Gone with the Wind, anyone? James Bond? Jurassic Park? But of late, as new networks like Netflix scramble for an edge in winning viewers’ loyalty, old pros in the game like HBO hustle to prove they’re still king of the game, and major film moguls hunt for the next hot franchise or Oscar winner, it seems like everyone is looking for the best book adaptations. Which means we’re not only living in the second golden age for television—it’s also a freaking fantastic time to be a reader (and maybe an even better time to be an author? One can dream.) Among the biggest book adaptations news of 2019, Leigh Bardugo’s megahit Six of Crows was picked up for adaptation by Netflix (date TBD, probably not 2020), Big Little Lies author Liane Moriarty has a new adaptation in the works for another thriller, and of course, everyone is on the hunt to discover the next Game of Thrones. Apparently it won’t be a spinoff show, after all. But these are only a few rumblings among a long list of projects coming in the next year, with even more plans already firm for 2021. That said, one area where Hollywood’s not so golden is in its diversity, which is glaringly missing from this list.

The books you read will be used in your English class during the first few weeks of the first trimester. As you read, we urge you to remember that the art of reading is a creative act, a collaboration between reader and writer. Hold a dialogue with these books: question, argue, disagree; underline those passages that exhilarate you as well as those that infuriate you. Keep a notebook to jot down your imme- diate responses to each of these works and write questions that you want to discuss in your English classes. Encourage your family and friends to join you in these reading experiences. A number of the books on this list have been made into movies, many of them wonderful in their own right. Seeing a movie instead of reading the book, however, will not prepare you for your teacher’s assignment related to that book, nor will it replace the unique experience of interacting with a specific text.
