The main community is approximately 163 kilometers southwest of Winnipeg and 135 kilometers southeast of Brandon. It is approximately a half hour drive to the US border. As of December 2013, the population of Swan Lake First Nation is 1,253 with 725 residing on reserve and 527 residing off reserve. The people of Swan Lake are governed by a Chief and four (4) council members who are elected every two years. Swan Lake First Nation is a signatory to Treaty 1 which was signed on August 3, 1871. As it operates, the knowledge and skills of community members improve and productivity levels increase. SLFN is proud to say that its greatest assets are its people. Through collaborative efforts with the Swan Lake Development Corporation and other agencies, SLFN has likewise created a database of skilled workers, business, and other resources in the area. SLFN is ready and willing to deploy its people who underwent extensive training to be gainfully employed. Potential employers who need the expertise of Swan Lake people may submit a request form available at www.swanlakefirstnation.ca In addition to employee database, SLFN is continuously updating its comprehensive community plan. The plan is a multi-year blueprint that encompasses the whole community with emphasis on applying the strengths of their people to achieve their goals. On the business side, SLFN has been active towards operating the following business ventures: a) Kitchi – Nodin Wind Farm to be operational in March 2013. Centre for Indigenous Environmental Resources has been instrumental in working closely with Chief & Council in the development of the business plan for this. b) Swan Lake Reserve 7A has been selected as the host site for the South Central Casino Project. Hence, the Spirit Sands Casino and Resort is scheduled to open in the fall of 2012. Having at least two community-wide Boat Launch events helps keep our community alive. Our new Splash Park is Fishing Area open and available for use.
