HEPTADIC VERBAL PATTERNS IN THE SOLOMON NARRATIVE OF 1 KINGS 1–11 John A. Davies Summary The narrative in 1 Kings 1–11 makes use of the literary device of sevenfold lists of items and sevenfold recurrences of Hebrew words and phrases. These heptadic patterns may contribute to the cohesion and sense of completeness of both the constituent pericopes and the narrative as a whole, enhancing the readerly experience. They may also serve to reinforce the creational symbolism of the Solomon narrative and in particular that of the description of the temple and its dedication. 1. Introduction One of the features of Hebrew narrative that deserves closer attention is the use (consciously or subconsciously) of numeric patterning at various levels. In narratives, there is, for example, frequently a threefold sequence, the so-called ‘Rule of Three’1 (Samuel’s three divine calls: 1 Samuel 3:8; three pourings of water into Elijah’s altar trench: 1 Kings 18:34; three successive companies of troops sent to Elijah: 2 Kings 1:13), or tens (ten divine speech acts in Genesis 1; ten generations from Adam to Noah, and from Noah to Abram; ten toledot [‘family accounts’] in Genesis). One of the numbers long recognised as holding a particular fascination for the biblical writers (and in this they were not alone in the ancient world) is the number seven. Among the more elusive members of the alliance has been Ba-J-sa miir 1 Ru-bu-bi .KUR A-ma-na-a-a, listed in the Monolith Inscription, column II, line 95. The majority view holds that the toponym A-ma-na-a-a refers to Ammon. the small state located in Transjordan = biblical cammon (Gen. 19:38, etc.). This iden tification ,:>riginated among late 19th and early 20th century scholars,2 is repeated in more recent works,3 and appears in standard translations.4 The ~llinority view was first offered by E. ONE SESSION SESSION INNOCENT BLOOD — PART ONE Tel Megiddo, where this session was filmed, is located at a strategic mountain pass overlooking the Plain of Jezreel, which made the city of Megiddo one of the most important cities in ancient Israel. The Via Maris, the main trade route between the dominant world pow- ers of the day — Egypt and the Mesopotamian empires of Assyria, Babylon, and Persia — crossed the mountains at Megiddo. So who- ever controlled the city could exert great power over world trade and have significant influence over world culture. In fact, the Via Maris was one source of Solomon’s wealth because God gave him the political might to control the key cities along that trade route — Hazor, Gezer, and of course Megiddo. Some scholars believe that because of Megiddo’s strategic location more battles have been fought in the Jezreel Valley below it than in any other place in the world. But in the context of the Bible, Megiddo repre- sents more than political control, more than economic and cultural influence. It also represents the battle for spiritual control of the minds and hearts of people — the ongoing battle between good and evil. That battle was waged when the people of ancient Israel lived in the land, it continues to this day, and it will culminate in the bat- tle of Har Megiddo, or Armageddon. So let’s take a closer look at the significance of Tel Megiddo. Centuries before the Israelites settled in the Promised Land (from about 2950 – 2350 BC), Megiddo was a prominent “high place” where the p eople of Canaan worshiped their fertility god, Baal, and his supposed mistress, Asherah. -

David’s Heir: The Five Prophecies of the Davidic Covenant; Three Words in the Covenant Establishing Perpetuity of Davidic Kings: “House, Kingdom, Throne,” 2 Sam 7:16; Matthew’s Messianic Genealogy of Jesus: the Chart Pedigree, Matt 1:1; Uses of the Title “Messiah”: the Anointed One, Ps 18:50; 89:20, 28–29, 34–36; 132:11 16. The Lord now reveals to Nathan the eternal significance of this covenant to David: 2 Samuel 7:16 - “Your [ David’s ] house [ the Davidic bloodline ] and your kingdom [ Israel ] shall endure before Me forever [ the kingdom is permanent ]; your throne shall be established forever [ rulership of the Davidic line through Christ is eternal ]. v. 17 - In accordance with all these words and all these visions, so did Nathan communicate the Davidic Covenant to David. 17. There are five prophecies contained in the Davidic Covenant: (1) David will have a son that will succeed him on the throne of Israel and who will establish his kingdom. (2) That son will be Solomon; it is he that will build the temple. (3) The Davidic dynasty on the throne of Israel is established for eternity. (4) Even though Solomon will fail, enter reversionism, and become involved in idolatry, the covenant will not be broken but remain in force. (5) The house of David, his throne, and his kingdom are established forever. 18. The Lord uses three words in the covenant that expresses the immutability of David’s right to the throne of Israel. 19. The word “house” is ty]B^ (bayith) and it refers to the dynasty of a monarch, in this case the house of David.
