Marion -t'Cl-ark is responsible for introducing me to the co-author of these books, Rex Horoi; and for encouraging him to work with me. on them, DanielMaeke,thePermanent SecretaryoftheMinistryof Education and Training,generously granted Rex a leave of absence from his teaching responsiblities so that he might participate in this project. The staffsoftheGovernment InformationOffice,the Solomon Islands Museum, and the Solomon Islands Toktok all helped to make these books a little more appealing to :-he eye by providing photographs frOm which the illustrators could get ideas, Ron Campbell,training project coordinator for the Peace Corps group which trained in the fail of 1978, compiled a pamphlet entitled Resour I _.s,which wasusedasthe basis, for many of _the follow-upactivitiesin -The Communication and Culture Handbook.{ The trainees during that program and many of the volunteers who were in the country at that time were very candid in telling of their rektions to their- own Pijin courses, of the cross cul- tural and ling-aisticj difficulties they had had; and of what they would like to see in a new \course: Back in Honolul,Bob Gibson and Bonnie Davis of the Pacific Area Language Materials D velopment Project of the University of Hawaii and Ken Rehg and Rick = ackson. of the Bilingual Education for the Trust TerritoriesProject of the University of Hawaii were very helpful in sho*ing me, how to avoid some of the pitfalls in work' of this kind.In additien; Bob and Bona were responsible for findinrme the excellent illustrators who worked n the project.' . Dick Day and HeleHarper of the Department of English as a Second Language,and yron Bender and Larry Thompson of .the Department of Linguisticsat the University of Hawaii were'very kind to allow Rex to take advantae of the expertise. they have to offer in their respective fields while he s in Honolulu. Renee Heyum, Curator of the Pacific Collection of Hamilton Library at the University of Hawaii, was helpful in providing us with access to the closed shelves of thatollection and in leading us to information when we didn't know where to look. Don Topping, Director of the Social Sciences Research Institute at the Unkftrsity encouraged us to make. tapes to accompany the materials and provided us with our first contact with the University of Hawaii Foreign Language Laboratories.Jerry Chalig and his staff saw toit that the tapes we made were of the finest quality. The tapes of the custom stories were made by Luke Susuta of the Solomon Islands Br(')adcasting Corporation.He also ihelped record the basic materials for The Communication and Culture Handbook and edited the Pijin materials in that volume.' ivs During the Spring;1979;training program;the Pijin teachers, Johnny Morgan; Patrick- Billy, Eric Sepi; Joshua 'Tenau, Malachai Hato; and Grace Wale,- pointed out many of the weaknesses in the first draft of the materials and had many useful suggestions for= revisions.Ernie Lee,who satinonthattraining program,also had many- useful suggestions from both a linguistic and a pedagogical point of view. CarolineSiota;theAdministrativeOfficer_ ofthePeace_. Corps Solomons;and finny Marten;the Secretary; were very suportive; patient;andhelpful. Discussions .cwith.Peace Corps Solomonsco- director Terry Marshall led to a change in the format of the lessons in The Communications and Culture Handbook- whichresultedinan >im- proved product. Three people I've never met; but whose ideas made a great con- tribution to the basic direction these books have taken are E. Thomas Brewster and Elizabeth S.12 Brewster, 'co-authors of Language Acquisition Made Practical,and Alan Healey,author of Language Learner's Field Guide.
