The month of June is famous for “June Gloom.” May and June together are usually the cloudiest months in coastal Southern California. It’s ironic that in this month we celebrate the holiday of Shavuot where it’s customary to Sharon and Rose decorate one’s house with beautiful flowers. While we have fresh flowers each week at Garden of Palms we look forward to taking our decorations to the next level for Shavuot and bringing you fantastic programming as well! The month of June also includes Father’s Day! You know I love a good joke, so here’s one for Father’s Day: “I gave my father $100 and said, “Buy yourself something that will make your life easier.” So he went out and bought a present for my mother.” On behalf of all our staff, we want to wish all the fathers at Garden of Palms the Happiest Father’s Day! Having played the instru- ment for, then, almost two decades, I thought that a novelist would not, could not, feature specialty instruments such as the C-melody sax if he did not play the horn himself. Once the saxophone had caught my attention, I noticed all sorts of uncommon references that seemed to confirm my hunch that Thomas Pynchon himself played the instrument: McClintic Sphere’s 4½ reed, the contra- bass sax of Against the Day, Gravity’s Rainbow’s Charlie Parker passage.

Two years later EMI U.K. created the Tamla Motown imprint, an international umbrella for the company’s multi-label output.
