If you look closely at the balcony, you will find there are griffins. The griffin, griffon, or gryphon is a legendary creature with the body, tail, and back legs of a lion; the head and wings of an eagle; and sometimes an eagle's talons as its front feet (or an eagle's claws on the lion paws), and with the tail of a snake. Because the lion was traditionally considered the king of the beasts, and the eagle the king of the birds, by the Middle Ages the griffin was thought to be an especially powerful and majestic creature. Since classical antiquity, griffins were known for guarding treasures and priceless possessions, and their claws were considered to be very valuable, as they could detect the existance of poison in liquids. A few words about Heraklion... About the origin of the name Heraklion, the myth says that Rhea, Zeus' mother, ordered Kurites to protect her baby son from his father Kronos. One of the Kurites, Idaean Herakles (perhaps the earliest embodiment of the later hero Hercules) originated the Olympic Games by instigating a race among his four "finger" brothers. This Herakles was the "thumb"; his brothers were Aeonius (forefinger), Epimedes (middle finger), Iasus (ring finger/healing finger), and Idas or Acesidas (little finger). Idaean Herakles gave his name to Heraklion. The Arab traders from al-Andalus (Iberia) who founded the Emirate of Crete moved the island's capital from Gortyna to a new castle. They built a moat around the city for protection, and named the city, rabḍ al-ḫandaq ("Castle of the Moat"). This was hellenized as Χάνδαξ (Chándax) or Χάνδακας (Chándakas) and Latinized as Candia, which was taken into other European languages: in Italian and Latin as Candia, in French as Candie, in English as Candy, all of which could refer to the island of Crete as a whole as well as to the city alone; the Ottoman name was Kandiye. After the Byzantine reconquest of Crete, the city was locally known as Megalo Kastro ('Big Castle' in Greek) and its inhabitants were called Kastrinoi ("castle-dwellers"). The ancient name Heraklion was revived in the 19th century and comes from the nearby Roman port of Heracleum ("Heracles's city"), whose exact location is unknown. English usage formerly preferred the classicizing transliterations "Heraklion" or "Heraclion", but the form "Iraklion" is becoming more common. Today, Heraklion extends far more than the medieval walls of the city, but the areas that lay within the walls, are even referred to today as Chandakas (Chandax). “Chandax” actually means “ditch”. There once was a ditch filled with water surrounding the walls of the city, for protection.
