Today, with its sophisticated infra- structure, superb transport network and business-friendly envi- Hronment, it is one of the world’s busiest ports and a major maritime centre. We are pleased to see that container throughput at the Port of Hong Kong recorded double-digit growth in the first half of 2010, signalling the begin- ning of a recovery path. The total gross tonnage of ships on the Hong Kong Shipping Register amounted to 54.6 million at the end of October, making us the 5th largest Register in the world. About 700 shipping-related companies call Hong Kong home. From here, a comprehensive range of high quality maritime services in, notably, ship management, ship finance, shipbroking, ship surveying, maritime legal services and arbitration, marine insurance and other supporting services, are provided to ships calling at our port as well as the shipping community worldwide. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has fos- tered close partnerships with the port and shipping sectors to strengthen Hong Kong’s position as a leading hub port and enhance our competitive- ness as a prominent maritime centre. Our success depends upon our abil- ity to provide ever-improving services to the global shipping community. This handbook introduces you to the wide variety of companies and activities that constitute the Port of Hong Kong. I am sure you will find it a most useful and practical guide to our port and maritime services. The saying is an apt description of the shipping industry in Hong Kong. Hong Kong has long been renowned as a shipping centre. ItsT sheltered harbour is a valuable asset. The city’s immediate catchment area for goods is the huge hinterland in South China. Quality shipping services together with highly developed infrastructure have been providing Hong Kong with both software and hardware necessary for the world’s top shipping firms. Following recent fluctuations in the global trade market, sentiments remain diversified and the pace of recovery remains unclear. However, the Port of Hong Kong aims to maintain its competitiveness. On the government side, the Marine Department endeavours to keep the costs of its services as competitive as possible. Reductions in fees of 27 marine-related services benefit all vessels entering Hong Kong waters and owners of ships registered here. In addition, waiving some charges related to the employment, registration and certification of seafarers effectively lowers the costs for the players in the industry. In response to industrial trends towards ultra-large containerships, the Marine Department is working with the Civil Engineering and Development Department on a project to increase the water depth for Kwai Tsing Container Basin and its approach channel. In short, we will continue to improve our services as technology advances and trading develops. This Port Handbook keeps you abreast of the latest development of the Port of Hong Kong – a port keeping its competitiveness.
