ANNUAL REPORT 2018

PRESIDENT’S REPORT Firstly, congratulations to all members on a successful 2017-18 season. This season was action packed with many of you achieving new milestones and/or passing long standing records. You should be really proud of your achievements and I hope you celebrated with close family and friends when you reached these milestones. If you haven’t done this, make sure you do this before the start of the next season!

For my first annual report I want to highlight what happened more off the field than on it, so I apologise if this bores a few.

The start of my presidency was a smooth one with John Sherry handing over the duties to me as he took on the Registrar role. John has done some amazing work this season getting all the records up-to-date. While putting this report together I could see firsthand John has quite literally re-written history!

At last year’s Annual General Meeting, we saw both Mick Martell and Ian Lock become Life Members’ of the association; both are very deserving members to receive this honour. I’ve mentioned this before on numerous occasions, but I want to reiterate it again, I strongly believe that this association would have ceased to exist in the last decade if it wasn’t for Mick’s support through his sponsorship from his real estate agency, Perth Metro Property Group. I cannot thank Mick and his team enough for his sponsorship again this season and I hope all members consider Mick when looking at the property market.

Following the Annual General Meeting the committee set out with a goal to “work smarter and not harder” this season. Much of this was about automating and speeding up business processes which is difficult in an industry that can be at the best of times, slow moving. However, the committee got cracking and was able to implement:

- Online membership registration forms, - Use of cloud storage for the committee’s data, - Better financial tracking and appropriately budgeting the seasons finances, - Skype for Business for our committee meetings, - Improved use of our website with regularly updated minutes, and - The written committee reports so all members could see what the committee was working on.

These activities along with others really helped the committee free up time so it could focus on some items that have been put off for years or never been looked at. Some of these being:

- Getting our sponsorship with Perth Metro Property Group once again, (thanks Mick)

ANNUAL REPORT 2018

- Getting merchandising done early with over 100 members in our new ‘black and gold’ off field polos in the first half of the season, - Working with the WACA to establish a Memorandum of Understanding, a piece of work still ongoing which is critical to safeguard both parties from any niggles or issues moving forward. - A robust and thorough end of season survey that ended up created a 20-odd page recommendation document in how to improve umpiring in WA Premier Cricket. - A deep and thorough review into Umpire pay rates.

I know the last bullet point created some concern amongst the membership and I copped a lot of flak for not doing what my predecessors did before me or what other state umpiring associations have done with their pay-rates. While I appreciate and respect that viewpoint, my time as President will always be about challenging and innovating the system to benefit our members in full, ideally creating a more open, transparent, honest and agile association along the way. I’m very excited that this will see a new era for pay-rates that will see larger pay increases in the season ahead.

Like any new President before me and after will face, the first year had its ups and downs. Thankfully my first year was one with a lot of ups and successes. The survey data at the end of the season formulated by the Survey Working Party showed the WACUA did a lot of things right this season. Some of the personal comments directed towards myself were really gratifying to see so thank you to those who said kind words. Of course, the survey data and the Working Party’s report did show the committee has a bit of work to do around our communication strategy, giving members plenty of notice about new and exciting social events like our Annual Dinner; something that that should be addressed moving forward with the use-of modern technology.

Sadly, one significant disappointed for me as President this season was seeing one of our members lose the right to umpire in WA Premier Cricket for a conduct related issue. While isolated, this incident has highlighted the issue of making sure that the association can protect its members correctly when a grievance like this occurs. Moving forward I’m optimistic that the WACUA can work with the relevant parties to introduce safe guards and improve on its own constitution to make sure all individuals are treated equally and fairly when a grievance matter is raised.

Moving forward, the association is in great shape. We’re financially stable, modernising and growing every year with us seeing new members this season that did not just umpire in WA Premier Cricket but came from other associations and even overseas. I believe the season ahead will be one about getting back to our core values which is creating a culture that is a lot more social. Some ideas that come to mind are having more social events throughout the year

including the WACUA contributing to bar tabs after rounds in the WA Premier Cricket competition. I’d recommend watching this space!

On a personal note, the season gone was a very difficult one for me. The enjoyment I had for umpiring (on field) had been quite low all season. Thankfully the key factors that led to this were around premature burnout which can be attributed to doing too much with the pre- season like conducting almost all the training and writing the new set of Playing Conditions for the WADCC. Thankfully this is something I can easily resolve by minimising my workload in these areas and focusing on things that are important; my own personal umpiring and this amazing association we have.

Thank you and all the best for the upcoming season. Trent Steenholdt WACUA President

SECRETARY’S REPORT The 2017-18 season was another strong one membership wise with many new umpires joining the WACUA family. Attendance at our monthly meetings continues to improve with members enjoying the lively discussion and chance to socialise with their fellow umpires. As always, the Life Members’ Breakfast and the Grand Final Breakfast were highlights of the WACUA 2017-18 calendar. We held our second WACUA Annual Dinner this season at the Leederville Function Centre at Leederville Oval with Mathew Cheeseman, former A-League Assistant Referee, the guest speaker for the evening. It was a great evening enjoyed by all which I’m sure will grow over the years to come.

Thank you all again for your support throughout the season.

I hope you enjoyed the season, see you all again for the 2018-19 season! Ashlee Gibbons WACUA Secretary

ANNUAL REPORT 2018

TREASURER’S REPORT Thanks to everyone for bearing with me through my first season as treasurer! There’s a formal report on the finances towards the end of this document for those that want to skip straight to that.

We started out the season with a plan of boosting our cash reserves after a couple of flat seasons. When the season started, the committee set a target of finishing the season with $1000 more than what we started with. Due to several factors, we’ve actually finished up $2043, with the main reason being the cancellation of the planned T20 game at Kent Street High School. It’s also no secret that the communication coming from the committee wasn’t the best this season, which contributed to lower attendance than planned at some of our events. I understand that we’re a non-profit organization, so if I’m elected back on to the committee for the upcoming season I will definitely push to spend all of the money that we make so that we can provide better returns to all members.

During the season, the finances were emailed out to members along with the notices of upcoming general meetings. We’re slowly getting even more up to speed with technology, and I’m pleased to say that our finances are now on our website! For those of you that love numbers, you can find them at http://www.wacua.asn.au/information/finances/.

Thanks for supporting me over the course of the year. Let’s make 2018/2019 a great one for umpiring! Andrew Micenko WACUA Treasurer

OBITUARIES BRIAN ALBERT ROSE 20 November 1926 - 2 April 2018

Brian Rose passed away recently, aged 91. Part of the famous south-west farming family his father belied the time-honoured pursuit into agriculture. Instead he became a grocery shop- keeper in Kelmscott. Consequently, his son was schooled in the local area and on leaving school joined in the business.

However, Brian later joined the army and saw some overseas service in Japan. When he returned home and was discharged he re-trained in the telecommunications industry. He spent some time in Broome before returning to the south.

For the time he was in the metropolitan area he watched his son play junior cricket. He, like many fathers, was pressed in umpiring. Although his son did not progress beyond juniors Brian decided to carry on to senior level In the years 1965-66 to 1968-69 he stood in 44 WACA district cricket matches, reaching first grade for 8 of them, and 1 Sunday league match.

However, several country postings prevented him from continuing to participate. He maintained his great interest in the game on his retirement but did not take up umpiring again. He leaves his wife, Margaret, a son and a daughter.

BRIAN GOYNICH 13 October 1933 - 2 June 2018

Born in the Subiaco area Brian Goynich was educated locally and at Perth Boys School. It was here that he showed a flair for drawing and so trained as a draftsman. As a youngster he played football and cricket with his contemporaries.

However, in a local junior football match he suffered the ignominy of a broken nose so that activity was curtailed. He played in a semi-social level of cricket in the summer. His interest in the game was such that he trained as an umpire and joined the WACA district competition in 1975-76

His competency was quickly recognised that he went up the ranks. In fact of his 112 matches 62 were in first grade, and 23 in Sunday League. Unfortunately after six seasons he was forced to retire but continued to maintain an interest.

In 1983-84 he was invited to join the Umpires Appointment Board and served on that board for four seasons.

He passed away recently, aged 84 leaving his wife, Robyn, two sons and a daughter.
