Abstract Let F4 be the root system associated with the 24-cell, and let M(F4) be the simple linear dependence matroid corresponding to this root system. We determine the automorphism group of this matroid and compare it to the Coxeter group W for the root system. We find non-geometric automorphisms that preserve the matroid but not the root system. 1 Introduction Given a finite set of vectors in Euclidean space, we consider the linear dependence matroid of the set, where dependences are taken over the reals. When the original set of vectors has `nice' symmetry, it makes sense to compare the geometric symmetry (the Coxeter or Weyl group) with the group that preserves sets of linearly independent vectors. One can interpret these results in the following way: combinatorial sym- metry (preserving dependence) and geometric symmetry (via isometries of the ambient Euclidean space) are essentially the same. -

BRIDGES Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science Uniform Polychora Jonathan Bowers 11448 Lori Ln Tyler, TX 75709 E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Like polyhedra, polychora are beautiful aesthetic structures - with one difference - polychora are four dimensional. Although they are beyond human comprehension to visualize, one can look at various projections or cross sections which are three dimensional and usually very intricate, these make outstanding pieces of art both in model form or in computer graphics. Polygons and polyhedra have been known since ancient times, but little study has gone into the next dimension - until recently. Definitions A polychoron is basically a four dimensional "polyhedron" in the same since that a polyhedron is a three dimensional "polygon". To be more precise - a polychoron is a 4-dimensional "solid" bounded by cells with the following criteria: 1) each cell is adjacent to only one other cell for each face, 2) no subset of cells fits criteria 1, 3) no two adjacent cells are corealmic. If criteria 1 fails, then the figure is degenerate. The word "polychoron" was invented by George Olshevsky with the following construction: poly = many and choron = rooms or cells. A polytope (polyhedron, polychoron, etc.) is uniform if it is vertex transitive and it's facets are uniform (a uniform polygon is a regular polygon). Degenerate figures can also be uniform under the same conditions. A vertex figure is the figure representing the shape and "solid" angle of the vertices, ex: the vertex figure of a cube is a triangle with edge length of the square root of 2. -

Boe) Abstract Let g be a simple Lie algebra over the field C of complex numbers, with root system Φ relative to a fixed maximal toral subalgebra h. Let S be a subset of the simple roots ∆ of Φ, which determines a standard parabolic subalgebra of g. Fix an integral weight ∗ µ µ ∈ h , with singular set J ⊆ ∆. We determine when an infinitesimal block O(g,S,J) := OS of parabolic category OS is nonzero using the theory of nilpotent orbits. We extend work of Futorny-Nakano-Pollack, Br¨ustle-K¨onig-Mazorchuk, and Boe-Nakano toward classifying the representation type of the nonzero infinitesimal blocks of category OS by considering arbitrary sets S and J, and observe a strong connection between the theory of nilpotent orbits and the representation type of the infinitesimal blocks. We classify certain infinitesimal blocks of category OS including all the semisimple infinitesimal blocks in type An, and all of the infinitesimal blocks for F4 and G2. We introduce a method to construct binary polyhedral groups as a subset of quaternions H via spin map of SO(3). In addition, we show that the binary icosahedral group in H is the set of vertices of a 600-cell by applying the Coxeter–Dynkin diagram of H4. Introduction The classification of finite subgroups in SLn(C) derives attention from various research areas in mathematics. Especially when n = 2, it is related to McKay correspondence and ADE singularity theory [1]. The list of finite subgroups of SL2(C) consists of cyclic groups (Zn), binary dihedral groups corresponded to the symmetry group of regular 2n-gons, and binary polyhedral groups related to regular polyhedra. These are related to the classification of regular polyhedrons known as Platonic solids. There are five platonic solids (tetrahedron, cubic, octahedron, dodecahedron, icosahedron), but, as a regular polyhedron and its dual polyhedron are associated with the same symmetry groups, there are only three binary polyhedral groups(binary tetrahedral group 2T, binary octahedral group 2O, binary icosahedral group 2I) related to regular polyhedrons. -

Introduction to Representation Theory of Lie Algebras Tom Gannon May 2020 These are the notes for the summer 2020 mini course on the representation theory of Lie algebras. We'll first define Lie groups, and then discuss why the study of representations of simply connected Lie groups reduces to studying representations of their Lie algebras (obtained as the tangent spaces of the groups at the identity). We'll then discuss a very important class of Lie algebras, called semisimple Lie algebras, and we'll examine the repre- sentation theory of two of the most basic Lie algebras: sl2 and sl3. Using these examples, we will develop the vocabulary needed to classify representations of all semisimple Lie algebras! Please email me any typos you find in these notes! Let G be a connected compact Lie group that is 0 semisimple (equivalently, ZG is finite, or G = G ; see Exercise 4(ii) in HW9) and for which the associated root system is isomorphic to (V; Φ) (so G 6= 1). More specifically, we pick a maximal torus T and suppose an isomorphism (V; Φ) ' (X(T )Q; Φ(G; T ))) is chosen. Where can X(T ) be located inside V ? It certainly has to contain the root lattice Q := ZΦ determined by the root system (V; Φ). Exercise 1(iii) in HW7 computes the index of this inclusion of lattices: X(T )=Q is dual to the finite abelian group ZG. The root lattice is a \lower bound" on where the lattice X(T ) can sit inside V . This handout concerns the deeper \upper bound" on X(T ) provided by the Z-dual P := (ZΦ_)0 ⊂ V ∗∗ = V of the coroot lattice ZΦ_ (inside the dual root system (V ∗; Φ_)). Computation of Real-Valued Basis Functions Which Transform As Irreducible Representations of the Polyhedral Groups
COMPUTATION OF REAL-VALUED BASIS FUNCTIONS WHICH TRANSFORM AS IRREDUCIBLE REPRESENTATIONS OF THE POLYHEDRAL GROUPS NAN XU∗ AND PETER C. DOERSCHUKy Abstract. Basis functions which are invariant under the operations of a rotational point group G are able to describe any 3-D object which exhibits the rotational point group symmetry. However, in order to characterize the spatial statistics of an ensemble of objects in which each object is different but the statistics exhibit the symmetry, a complete set of basis functions is required. In particular, for each irreducible representation (irrep) of G, it is necessary to include basis functions that transform according to that irrep. This complete set of basis functions is a basis for square- integrable functions on the surface of the sphere in 3-D. Because the objects are real-valued, it is convenient to have real-valued basis functions. In this paper the existence of such real-valued bases is proven and an algorithm for their computation is provided for the icosahedral I and the octahedral O symmetries. Furthermore, it is proven that such a real-valued basis does not exist for the tetrahedral T symmetry because some irreps of T are essentially complex. The importance of these basis functions to computations in single-particle cryo electron microscopy is described.
