  • Federico Selvi a Critical Checklist of the Vascular Flora of Tuscan Maremma
Federico Selvi A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy) Abstract Selvi, F.: A critical checklist of the vascular flora of Tuscan Maremma (Grosseto province, Italy). — Fl. Medit. 20: 47-139. 2010. — ISSN 1120-4052. The Tuscan Maremma is a historical region of central western Italy of remarkable ecological and landscape value, with a surface of about 4.420 km2 largely corresponding to the province of Grosseto. A critical inventory of the native and naturalized vascular plant species growing in this territory is here presented, based on over twenty years of author's collections and study of relevant herbarium materials and literature. The checklist includes 2.056 species and subspecies (excluding orchid hybrids), of which, however, 49 should be excluded, 67 need confirmation and 15 have most probably desappeared during the last century. Considering the 1.925 con- firmed taxa only, this area is home of about 25% of the Italian flora though representing only 1.5% of the national surface. The main phytogeographical features in terms of life-form distri- bution, chorological types, endemic species and taxa of particular conservation relevance are presented. Species not previously recorded from Tuscany are: Anthoxanthum ovatum Lag., Cardamine amporitana Sennen & Pau, Hieracium glaucinum Jord., H. maranzae (Murr & Zahn) Prain (H. neoplatyphyllum Gottschl.), H. murorum subsp. tenuiflorum (A.-T.) Schinz & R. Keller, H. vasconicum Martrin-Donos, Onobrychis arenaria (Kit.) DC., Typha domingensis (Pers.) Steud., Vicia loiseleurii (M. Bieb) Litv. and the exotic Oenothera speciosa Nutt. Key words: Flora, Phytogeography, Taxonomy, Tuscan Maremma. Introduction Inhabited by man since millennia and cradle of the Etruscan civilization, Maremma is a historical region of central-western Italy that stretches, in its broadest sense, from south- ern Tuscany to northern Latium in the provinces of Pisa, Livorno, Grosseto and Viterbo.

  • Phylogeny and Systematics of the Rauvolfioideae
PHYLOGENY AND SYSTEMATICS Andre´ O. Simo˜es,2 Tatyana Livshultz,3 Elena OF THE RAUVOLFIOIDEAE Conti,2 and Mary E. Endress2 (APOCYNACEAE) BASED ON MOLECULAR AND MORPHOLOGICAL EVIDENCE1 ABSTRACT To elucidate deeper relationships within Rauvolfioideae (Apocynaceae), a phylogenetic analysis was conducted using sequences from five DNA regions of the chloroplast genome (matK, rbcL, rpl16 intron, rps16 intron, and 39 trnK intron), as well as morphology. Bayesian and parsimony analyses were performed on sequences from 50 taxa of Rauvolfioideae and 16 taxa from Apocynoideae. Neither subfamily is monophyletic, Rauvolfioideae because it is a grade and Apocynoideae because the subfamilies Periplocoideae, Secamonoideae, and Asclepiadoideae nest within it. In addition, three of the nine currently recognized tribes of Rauvolfioideae (Alstonieae, Melodineae, and Vinceae) are polyphyletic. We discuss morphological characters and identify pervasive homoplasy, particularly among fruit and seed characters previously used to delimit tribes in Rauvolfioideae, as the major source of incongruence between traditional classifications and our phylogenetic results. Based on our phylogeny, simple style-heads, syncarpous ovaries, indehiscent fruits, and winged seeds have evolved in parallel numerous times. A revised classification is offered for the subfamily, its tribes, and inclusive genera. Key words: Apocynaceae, classification, homoplasy, molecular phylogenetics, morphology, Rauvolfioideae, system- atics. During the past decade, phylogenetic studies, (Civeyrel et al., 1998; Civeyrel & Rowe, 2001; Liede especially those employing molecular data, have et al., 2002a, b; Rapini et al., 2003; Meve & Liede, significantly improved our understanding of higher- 2002, 2004; Verhoeven et al., 2003; Liede & Meve, level relationships within Apocynaceae s.l., leading to 2004; Liede-Schumann et al., 2005). the recognition of this family as a strongly supported Despite significant insights gained from studies clade composed of the traditional Apocynaceae s.

Several species of this family are known to possess indole alkaloids and other classes of secondary me- tabolites, whereas terpenoids, an inositol and the indole alkaloids harmane-3 acid and braznitidumine have been described in A. nitidum. In the present study, extracts from the wood bark, leaves and branches of this species were prepared for assays against malaria parasites and cytotoxicity testing using human hepatoma and normal monkey kidney cells. The wood bark extracts were active against Plasmodium falciparum and showed a low cytotoxicity in vitro, whereas the leaf and branch extracts and the pure alkaloid braznitidumine were inactive.

However, the stress produced by fires promotes the biosynthesis of compounds which could affect the post-fire resprouting, and this approach has been poorly evaluated in fire ecology. In this study, we evaluate the changes in the concentration of chlorophylls, carotenoids, phenolic compounds, and tannins as a result of experimental burns (EB). We asked whether this biochemical response to fire could influence the resprouting responses. For that, we conducted Citation: Santacruz-García, A.C.; three EB in three successive years in three different experimental units.

  • Research on Spontaneous and Subspontaneous Flora of Botanical Garden "Vasile Fati" Jibou
Volume 19(2), 176- 189, 2015 JOURNAL of Horticulture, Forestry and Biotechnology www.journal-hfb.usab-tm.ro Research on spontaneous and subspontaneous flora of Botanical Garden "Vasile Fati" Jibou Szatmari P-M*.1,, Căprar M. 1 1) Biological Research Center, Botanical Garden “Vasile Fati” Jibou, Wesselényi Miklós Street, No. 16, 455200 Jibou, Romania; *Corresponding author. Email: [email protected] Abstract The research presented in this paper had the purpose of Key words inventory and knowledge of spontaneous and subspontaneous plant species of Botanical Garden "Vasile Fati" Jibou, Salaj, Romania. Following systematic Jibou Botanical Garden, investigations undertaken in the botanical garden a large number of spontaneous flora, spontaneous taxons were found from the Romanian flora (650 species of adventive and vascular plants and 20 species of moss). Also were inventoried 38 species of subspontaneous plants, adventive plants, permanently established in Romania and 176 vascular plant floristic analysis, Romania species that have migrated from culture and multiply by themselves throughout the garden. In the garden greenhouses were found 183 subspontaneous species and weeds, both from the Romanian flora as well as tropical plants introduced by accident. Thus the total number of wild species rises to 1055, a large number compared to the occupied area. Some rare spontaneous plants and endemic to the Romanian flora (Galium abaujense, Cephalaria radiata, Crocus banaticus) were found. Cultivated species that once migrated from culture, accommodated to environmental conditions and conquered new territories; standing out is the Cyrtomium falcatum fern, once escaped from the greenhouses it continues to develop on their outer walls. Jibou Botanical Garden is the second largest exotic species can adapt and breed further without any botanical garden in Romania, after "Anastasie Fătu" care [11].
