AREA � Native plants are species that existed in Virginia before Jamestown, Virginia was founded in 1607. They are uniquely adapted to local conditions. Native plants provide food and shelter for a myriad of birds, butterflies, and other wildlife. Best of all, gardeners can feel the satisfaction of preserving a part of our natural heritage while enjoying the beauty of native plants in the garden. Hardy herbaceous perennials form little or no woody tissue and live for several years. Some of these plants are short-lived and may live only three years, such as wild columbine, while others can live for decades. They are a group of plants that gardeners are very passionate about because of their lovely foliage and flowers, as well as their wide variety of textures, forms, and heights. Most of these plants are deciduous and die back to the ground in the winter. Ferns, in contrast, have no flowers but grace our gardens with their beautiful foliage. Herbaceous perennials and ferns are a joy to garden with because they are easily moved to create new design combinations and provide an ever-changing scene in the garden. They are appropriate for a wide range of shade gardens, from more formal gardens to naturalistic woodland gardens. The following are useful definitions: Cultivar (cv.) – a cultivated variety designated by single quotes, such as ‘Autumn Bride’. -

Manitoba Conservation Data Centre Surveys and Stewardship Activities, 2014 By Colin Murray Carla Church Manitoba Conservation Data Centre Wildlife Branch Manitoba Conservation and Water Stewardship Winnipeg, Manitoba Executive Summary In 2014, the Manitoba Conservation Data Center (MBCDC) added 538 new occurrences to its biodiversity geospatial database. This represents thousands of species at risk (SAR) observations for 260 plant, 92 animal and 19 invertebrate species. Observations were gathered by MBCDC staff and also submitted to the MBCDC by individuals and other organisations. This information will further enhance our understanding of biodiversity in Manitoba and guide research, development, and educational efforts. This year MBCDC field surveys targeted 21 species which are listed under the federal Species at Risk Act, assessed by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada (COSEWIC), and listed under Manitoba’s Endangered Species and Ecosystems Act, and especially occurring in the mixed-grass prairie and sand hill areas of southwestern Manitoba. -

Gastony’s Cliffbrake ( Pellaea gastonyi ) in Manitoba: new records and assessment of conservation status. Canadian Field-Naturalist 129(1): 45–52. Gastony’s Cliffbrake ( Pellaea gastonyi Windham) is a globally rare fern (Pteridaceae) that grows on limestone cliffs and ledges, including those associated with alvars. until now, the only record in Manitoba was from a location just north of Fish - er Branch. We report additional records and locations, one of which is over 250 km north of the initial collection. We also provide a conservation status assessment of this species in Manitoba that indicates that this species is rare in the province and is threatened in a least a portion of its range by habitat loss and degradation. Appendix D – Rare Plant Species and Wildlife Habitats Rare Plant Species and Wildlife Habitats The habitat profiles created for the Wildlife Action Plan have been developed for the purpose of describing the full range of habitats that support New Hampshire’s wildlife species. However, these habitats can also serve as useful units for identifying rare plant habitats. This appendix provides lists of rare plant species known to be associated with each WAP habitat type. In accordance with the Native Plant Protection Act (NH RSA 217-A), the New Hampshire Natural Heritage Bureau (NHB) maintains a list of the state’s rarest and most imperiled plant species. This list has been developed in cooperation with researchers, conservation organizations, and knowledgeable amateur botanists. Plant locations have been obtained from sources including herbarium specimens, personal contacts, the scientific literature, and through extensive field research. The list is updated regularly to reflect changes in information. For each habitat, a list of associated rare plant species is presented. These rare plant – habitat associations are based on known occurrences of each species in New Hampshire. It is possible that an individual species will have different habitat associations elsewhere in its range. For more information on dominant and characteristic plant species for each habitat, refer to the individual habitat profiles. Volume 19, No. 3 September 2018 Local Flora Kentucky Yellowwood Revisited by Arieh Tal N OUR NEWSLETTER of last March [Solidago 19(1), March 2018, pp. 1-3], I wrote of finding a small population of Kentucky Yellowwood (Cladrastris kentuckea) in the Cascadilla Gorge at the edge of the Cornell University campus. At the time, I was uncertain how the trees arrived at the location. Peter MarksPeter wrote to me shortly after the newsletter was published to suggest a likely source for the trees: June 2, 2018. ~ 2 ~ Solidago 19(3), September 2018 “There used to be a huge Yellowwood tree growing on a piece of land that no longer exists. It was where the Cornell Performing Arts Center is located. The tree was thus not far from the gorge, and its seeds could easily have dispersed into the gorge. I would guess the tree was perhaps 100 years old before it was cut down; thus there would have been lots of opportunities for seed dispersal over the decades.” So, a mystery has been solved. Since then, I’ve noticed a couple other young Yellowwood trees near the entrance to the gorge (where the stone trail steeply descends, the water cascades beneath the bridge, and the Performing Arts building now stands). As is often said in a different context, “The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” I resolved to return in spring to the site where I first found the trees, to photograph the flowers.
