As the event season at Heartwood comes to an end, let’s look back at what a success it has been. 6 AUTUMN 2019 www.sandridge-pc.gov.uk Guided walks Heartwood has hosted a total of twelve very well attended guided walks, ranging from dawn chorus to a twilight bat walk. Visitors turned out in all weathers to learn about the impact all our tree planting has had on local wildlife and our carbon footprint. These guided walks are always very popular.

Heartwoof Heartwood’s popular dog event, Heartwoof, has continued to grow from strength to strength over the years. There were even more doggy volunteers running agility activities and more stall holders taking part this year. A real highlight of the day was the new and improved dog show, which had over 150 entrants and saw one Ultimate Heartwoof Champion.

Nature Detectives To finish the summer off, our family membership came to life across two days of Nature Detective Activities that saw the junior woodland warriors whittling, den building, badge making and out on the hunt for mini-beasts. Collecting clues from all our activity stations, Nature Detectives worked out the puzzling whodunit to find the culprit of the missing hazelnut cake.

One of the highlights was the annual 5-mile charity run for the whole school which raised over £4,000 for our nominated charities. The new school year starts with outstanding examination performances at both A-level and GCSE. These results continue to support our ‘World Class Schools’ designation.

Developments

Our new multi-million-pound English and Library block is taking shape and will be ready for occupation in spring 2020. It will include over-sized classrooms to meet our needs for innovative teaching and a wonderful first-floor library that will look out over the fields towards Wheatfields Schools. This will be a really impressive learning environment that will benefit everyone at the school and allow us to meet the demands of the expanding population in St. Albans. Further capital developments to improve the campus will include two new science laboratories, a dedicated second kitchen and canteen and additional teaching space for the arts. Marshalswick Library Manager Enthusiasm

You might have heard that libraries are quiet places. That’s definitely not always true at Marshalswick! At the time of writing, the Summer Reading Challenge is off to a flying start, thanks to our enthusiastic staff and the help of the six local schools we work with – Oakwood, Sandridge, Skyswood, St. John Fisher, Wheatfields Infants and Wheatfields Juniors. Let me say a big thank you to the hardworking staff in all those schools for everything they’ve done to spread the word. The Summer Reading Challenge is the most successful library event in every year and it’s an incredibly busy time for us with thousands of books whizzing off the shelves. It’s incredibly fulfilling too. There’s nothing like seeing a child come alive as they describe their new favourite book! We’re up to date and on point with new technology as well.
