24 To any budding gardeners out there, you may be interested to know that after the success of our upcycled vegetable garden outside Marshalswick Community Centre as part of our involvement with Sustainable St. Albans, the Parish Council has decided to expand the initiative and create a permanent community garden in this location. We will be starting this coming winter by creating four raised beds to grow vegetables, herbs and bee attracting plants. There are many recognised health benefits to communal gardens – providing fresh food, relieving stress and loneliness through communal gardening, creating an opportunity to learn and share gardening and cooking ideas, community building, and enhancing our environment. We are excited to welcome members of the community to join us in the venture and would love to hear from you if you are interested. Rebecca Pannese, Project & Amenities Officer [email protected]. uk

Our more traditional Carol Service at 4pm on 15th December (BSL interpreted) and our Christmas Day Family Service at 11am are both at Sandringham School. If you want to get in the Christmas spirit earlier, why not join us at the Blackberry Jack on Thursday 12th December at 6.30pm for carols, mince pies and mulled wine - an opportunity to switch off from all that Christmas shopping and remind ourselves about the coming of Jesus. This year’s theme of Saints and Heroes produced a particularly diverse crop of subjects to be interpreted in flowers. It was noticeable how many contributors chose not a single hero or heroine, but a group of individually anonymous “everyday” heroes. Newcomers to the festival, Beverley and sister Jane, chose the Lifeboat Service. Also celebrated were the medical professions, air ambulance crews and WaterAid workers, while Fellowship members included relatives’ service badges in their “Help for Heroes” baskets. The impressive cake created by Lucy Baldock for the ceremonial opening by the Mayor of St. Albans, Janet Smith, continued in the same vein with an amazing proliferation of perfect sugar paste Remembrance poppies. at St. Leonard’s Harvest Flower Festival
