National Centre of Biography, ANU Professor Elleke Boehmer: Nelson Mandela: A World Life Date: Tuesday 21 February 2017 Venue: McDonald Room, Menzies Library, ANU Time: 3.30 p.m. Inquiries: [email protected] Professor Boehmer will speak about Nelson Mandela (1918-2013), first president of democratic South Africa, as a world life—a national leader whose life also had global dimensions. How did this passionately nationalist leader, who identified himself completely with his country and his people, also appeal to the world? And what is his legacy for the globalised 21st century? His story of patient onward progression towards justice and democracy, as told in his autobiography Long Walk to Freedom (1994), traces one of the most resonant political stories of the twentieth century, whose influence impacted South Africa, and the rest of the southern African sub-continent, and by extension, if in highly mediatized ways, the world. Elleke Boehmer is Professor of World Literature in English, in the English Faculty at the University of Oxford. She is the director of The Oxford Research in the Humanities (TORCH) and deputy director of the Oxford Life Writing Centre at Wolfson College, where she is also a governing body fellow. She is General Editor of the Oxford Studies in Postcolonial Literatures Series, and she was a Man Booker International judge 2013-15. During February 2017, she will be a visiting fellow in the school of history, ANU. The author of five monographs and five novels, Boehmer is a foundational figure in the field of colonial and postcolonial literary studies. Her monographs are Colonial and Postcolonial Literature (1995, 2005), Resistance in Interaction (2002), Stories of Women (2005), the biography Nelson Mandela (2008), and Indian Arrivals 1870-1915: Networks of British Empire (2015). -

Shedding light on the impact of this theory in the field of literary criticism, the paper focuses on Edward Said's views for the simple reason that he is considered the one who laid the cornerstone of this theory, despite the undeniable role of other leading figures. This theory is mainly based on what Said considers the false image of the Orient fabricated by Western thinkers as the primitive "other" in contrast with the civilized West. He believes that the consequences of colonialism are still persisting in the form of chaos, coups, corruption, civil wars, and bloodshed, which permeates many ex-colonies. The powerful colonizer has imposed a language and a culture, whereas those of the Oriental peoples have been ignored or distorted. Referring to some works of colonial and postcolonial novelists, the paper shows how being free from the repression of imperialism, the natives could, eventually, produce their own culture of opposition, build their own image, and write their history outside the frame they have for long been put into. -

Dibrugarh, Assam, Pin-786612 Abstract: The aim of this study is to critically examine from postcolonial point of view how the so called modern Christianity displaced the primitive Igbo religion ,its history and culture in the process of pacification by European powers as depicted in Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart. He attempted to understand both the merits and demerits of the culture. He even seems to show that a culture or religion which cannot change itself with time would obviously fall apart. For the Hypothetical statement of the study we hold that the primitive Igbo history and culture was in a form of democratic and well balanced state which was not inferior to that of the colonizer. Given the chance, the Igbos could have developed equally to a 'modern' and evolved culture and religion in due time. The modern European cultures were also primitive in their past. They have developed in course of time only with different degrees. But it must be remembered that the 'modernity' associated with ‘Christianity’ is mostly for material progress. Any nation, culture or religion may get advantages for such material progress. -

Alessandrini, Frantz Fanon and the Future of Cultural Politics (Lanham: Lexington Books, 2014), 295pp. Bhakti Shringarpure University of Connecticut It is no easy task to add to the existing and somewhat saturated body of work on Frantz Fanon, which has found a renewed impetus in light of the events of the Arab Spring. The year 2011 not only marked fifty years since the death of Fanon at the young age of 36, but it is also fifty years since the publication of his heavily read and most impactful work, The Wretched of the Earth. Now, more than half a century after his death, the specter of Frantz Fanon haunts the field of postcolonial studies, and his reflections on decolonization, nationalism and violence seem more poignant than ever. -

(Nicole Brossard, These Our Mothers)1 The silenced and wounded body of the colonised is a pervasive figure in colo- nial and postcolonial discourses, although its valencies obviously shift with the transition from colonial into postcolonial history. In the postcolonial process of rewriting, certainly, the trope of the dumb, oppressed body undergoes sig- nificant translations or transfigurations, which this chapter will examine in closer detail. In Maru (1971), a novelistic indictment of intra-black racism, the South African writer Bessie Head stakes out a number of epigraphic moments with which to begin the discussion. Maru recounts the tale of a woman who learns to paint – to figure – and in so doing undergoes significant changes of status and position in her society: from having no place or recognition she becomes a figure in the community.2 This character, Margaret Cadmore, is marginalised on a number of counts: she is a woman, an orphan and above all a Marsarwa (more commonly known by the derogatory term ‘Bushman’). -

Introduction to Victorian and Twentieth-Century Literature Heesok Chang Unlike the preceding three volumes in this Companion to British Literature – the Medieval, Early Modern, and Long Eighteenth Century – the current one attempts to cover at least two distinct periods: the Victorian and the Twentieth Century. To make matters more difficult, the second of these hardly counts as a single period; it is less an epoch than a placeholder. In terms of periodization, the Victorian era is succeeded – or some might say, overthrown – by the Modern. But modernism is not capacious enough to encompass the various kinds of literary art that emerged in Britain following World War II, the postmodern and the postcolonial, for example. We could follow the lead of recent scholars and expand the modernist period beyond the “high” to include the “late” and arguably the “post” as well. But this conceptual as well as temporal expansion does not take in the vital British literature written from the 1970s onward, an historical era distinct from the “postwar” that critics refer to, for now, as the “contemporary” (see English 2006). Of course, all periods are designated after they have finished, including the Victo- rian, which was very much a modernist creation. Yet it is unlikely we will come to call the period stretching from the middle of the last century to the early decades of the new millennium, from the breakup of Britain’s empire to the devolution of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, “Elizabethan.” And this despite the Victo- rian longevity of the Windsor monarch’s reign. The queen is one and the same, but the national culture is anything but. -

Special Issue on Literature No.2 October, 2014 Pp. 167-181 Confronting Racism and Hegemony in World Literature: Extending Achebe’s Critique of Conrad’s Heart of Darkness Abdullahi, Kadir Ayinde Department of English, Faculty of Arts, Social and Management Sciences, Yobe State University, Nigeria Abstract The interest of this paper is to examine racial issue and historical references, as well as the imperial discourse that Achebe has succinctly appropriated as thematic material and out of which his fiction emerged. The concern extends to Achebe‟s theoretical directions and the important debates about racial politics and hegemony in fiction. The essay serves as a reminder that the prevailing condition of what critics refer to as post colonial culture emerged from the historical phenomenon of colonialism, with its wide range of material practices and effects such as slavery, displacement, emigration and racial as well as cultural discrimination. These material conditions and their relationship to question of ideology are the heart of the most vigorous debates in Achebe‟s works. Since the colonial space is an antagonistic one, the paper reviews the divergent opinions of participants in the imperial discourse and locates the neutralizing influence of Achebe‟s literature in the colonial world. Several Australian scholars have suggested that book history has taken over where postcolonial studies let of. In their choice of subject matter, however, Australian book historians reinforce the very constructions of literary value they purport to dismantle, similar to how scholars of postcolonial studies have been critiqued for reinforcing the construction of colonial identities. hus, this article looks to the intellectual history of postcolonial studies for examples of how it has responded to similar critiques. What is revealed is a surprising, and heretofore untold, relationship between book history and postcolonial studies, which focuses on their transnational potential versus their ability to remain irmly grounded in the national.
