Russia will hope for a gentle introduction to UEFA EURO 2016 qualifying as they take on Liechtenstein for the fifth time in Group G. Match background • Russia's record in four games against Liechtenstein is W4 D0 L0 (W2 D0 L0 at home – W2 D0 L0 away), averaging exactly two goals a game in those fixtures. This will be the sides' first meeting in the UEFA European Championship. • The teams have been paired twice in FIFA World Cup qualifying; Aleksandr Kerzhakov (23) and Andrei Karyaka (37) put Russia in the driving seat on 26 March 2005 in their first meeting in the 2006 qualifying competition, only for 's free-kick (40) to give Liechtenstein hope. Indeed, it took a fine Vyacheslav Malafeev save from to deny the home side a point. It was more plain sailing in the return leg on 3 September 2005, Kerzhakov (27, 66) scoring both goals in a 2-0 home win. • In qualifying for the 2010 finals, Russia once more had a hard time in Vaduz on 1 April 2009, Guus Hiddink's side unable to add to Konstantin Zyryanov's 38th-minute opener in a 1-0 win. However, the return fixture in St Petersburg proved to be more straightforward, Roman Pavlyuchenko scoring two penalties (39, 45) after Vasili Berezutski (17) had broken the deadlock. • The nations' only meetings in UEFA age-group tournaments both ended in 6-0 wins for Russia's Under-19s – in 2003 and 2006.

5 Russia - Liechtenstein Monday 8 September 2014 - 18.00CET (20.00 local time) Match press kit Arena Khimki, Khimki Head coach Fabio Capello Date of birth: 18 June 1946 Nationality: Italian Playing career: Spal 1907, AS Roma, Juventus, AC Milan Coaching career: AC Milan (twice), Real Madrid CF (twice), AS Roma, Juventus, England, Russia • Forged a successful playing career, winning four titles – three with Juventus, one with Milan – and scoring eight goals from midfield in 32 games for Italy, including the winner in the Azzurri's first victory over England at Wembley in November 1973. • Despite lacking coaching experience Capello replaced Arrigo Sacchi at Milan in 1991, launching a hugely impressive five-year spell in which he led a star-studded team to four Italian championships – the first without losing a match – and the 1994 UEFA Champions League, beating Johan Cruyff's FC Barcelona 4-0 in the final. • Left Milan for Real Madrid and lifted the Spanish title in his only season there before an unsuccessful return to Milan. Re-established himself as one of world's foremost coaches at both Roma, where he won the 2000/01 Scudetto, and Juventus, where he ended each of his two campaigns as Serie A champion – only for both titles to be revoked as a result of the sporting fraud scandal. • Another one-year Liga title-winning effort at Madrid (a decade after the first) prompted the Football Association (FA) to appoint him England coach. Took over in January 2008 and steered the side to the 2010 FIFA World Cup with eight straight victories. Stayed on for UEFA EURO 2012 qualifying despite failing to progress beyond the last 16 in South Africa and guided his charges to the finals in Poland and Ukraine. • Stood down from England in February 2012, less than four months before UEFA EURO 2012, but the following summer took the Russia job and led them to the 2014 World Cup, where they failed to progress beyond the group stage. Signed a contract extension in January 2014 to remain in charge until after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. René Pauritsch Date of birth: 4 February 1964 Nationality: Austrian Playing career: ASK Voitsberg, Grazer AK (twice), Donawitzer SV Leoben, Red-White Rankweil, SV Frohnleiten Coaching career: USV Eschen/Mauren, AKA Vorarlberg, SC Austria Lustenau (assistant), Liechtenstein (youth), Liechtenstein • Enjoyed a modest playing career, making a total of 35 Austrian appearances for Graz and Leoben in addition to spending time in the lower leagues with Voitsberg, Rankweil and Frohnleiten. • His sole top-flight goal was a decisive one – the winner for Leoben in a 2-1 victory against Kremser SC on 3 November 1990. • Began coaching at Eschen/Mauren before returning home to Austria to lead Vorarlberg and, subsequently, work as assistant at second-tier Austria Lustenau under Heinz Fuchsbichler. • Took charge of Liechtenstein's youth teams in 2008, eventually stepping up to succeed Hans-Peter Zaugg at the helm of the senior national side in late 2012. • Enjoyed some early success in his new role, guiding Liechtenstein to 1-1 home draws against Latvia and Slovakia in his first two competitive fixtures.

EURO finals: The UEFA European Championship was a four-team event in 1960, 1964, 1968, 1972 and 1976 (when the preliminary round and quarter-finals were considered part of qualifying).

From 1980 it was expanded to an eight-team finals and remained in that format in 1984, 1988 and 1992 until 1996, when the 16-team format was adopted. UEFA EURO 2016 was the first tournament to be played as a 24-team finals.

Records of inactive countries A number of UEFA associations have been affected by dissolution or splits of member associations. For statistical purposes, the records of these inactive countries have been allocated elsewhere: therefore, all Soviet Union matches are awarded to Russia; all West Germany – but not East Germany – matches are awarded to Germany; all Yugoslavia and Serbia & Montenegro matches are awarded to Serbia; all Czechoslovakia matches are allocated to both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.

Abandoned/forfeited matches For statisical purposes, when a match has been started and then abandoned but later forfeited, the result on the pitch at the time of abandonment is counted. Matches that never started and were either cancelled or forfeited are not included in the overall statistics.
