  • White Violence and Spectral Blackness in Don Delillo's Zero K
COPAS—Current Objectives of Postgraduate American Studies Issue 20.2 (2019) White Violence and Spectral Blackness in Don DeLillo’s Zero K Mariya Dimitrova Nikolova ABSTRACT: Don DeLillo’s work is often framed as a visionary and ethical reflection on contemporary crises. Such reception redoubles an idea of white American farsightedness and morality that is already embedded in many of DeLillo’s stories—most recently in his 2016 novel Zero K. The following article challenges celebratory rhetoric surrounding this narrative both in terms of how texts work to position DeLillo in the line of American writers who address and thus metaphorically dismantle social evils, and how these texts enable visions of American heroism and transcendence despite and due to narrative exclusions, politics of exclusion, and repeated legitimization of white supremacy. I signal towards long- disregarded anti-blackness in DeLillo’s oeuvre, and consider some of its pronunciations in Zero K. I thus analyze some of the techniques and technologies through which DeLillo’s novel prolongs narratives of white supremacy. KEYWORDS: White Supremacy, Anti-Blackness, Orientalism, Don DeLillo, Narrative, Zero K Out of the Shadows There is nothing original in ending a story with light on the horizon, characters facing or moving towards it, the light flashing as a promise for a brighter future. For Toni Morrison, this “light” motif, which happens to be a symbol of whiteness, concludes a great number of American fictions (32-4). Don DeLillo’s most recent novel, Zero K, makes no exception. At the end of a rather bleak story, the main character stares at the light ahead.

  • Mimodiegetic and Volodiegetic Levels of Diegesis, Together with Variable Frame Rates, As Tools to Define a Tentative Early Film Language
Lund University Christoffer Markholm Centre for Languages and Literature FiMN09, spring 2017 Master Program in Film and Media History Master’s Thesis Supervisor: Prof. Erik Hedling Seminar Date: 31-05-2017 Mimodiegetic and Volodiegetic Levels of Diegesis, Together with Variable Frame Rates, as Tools to Define a Tentative Early Film Language Abstract This thesis focuses on the era of early film, with the aim to address an almost forgotten film language. Three aspects have been taken into account—variable frame rates, suppressed sound and hearing, and projection speeds—to analyze several examples of film to ascertain the techniques used by early filmmakers. I have also applied my findings of the techniques of yesteryear to contemporary films that have tried to imitate the early era production methods, in order to present the possibilities and difficulties in reproducing and utilizing the “old” language. The thesis also examines what separated the early era from the modern era, thus identifying future avenues of research. In so doing, I have introduced two novel diegetic terms, namely mimodiegetic and volodiegetic, with the former referring to sound imitating the visuals and the latter relating to a volatile sound rising from the image. Neither of the terms represents a technique, or, for that matter, are restricted to the early era—both rather provide a means to define a specific technique. Finally, based on my findings, I argue that the early film language is problematic to utilize fully today but that it is, at the same time, not confined to the early era. Keywords: silent era, diegesis, frame rate, frames per second, early film, intertitles, projection, Girl Shy, The Movies, Fiddlesticks, One Week, Neighbors, Easy Street, Ask Father, The Artist, La Antena, Dr.

  • Keaton Chronicle Vol
The Keaton Chronicle VOL. 23, ISSUE 2 / SPRING 2015 Sybil Seely Buster’s Most Charming Leading Lady By Lea Stans If you ask Buster Keaton fans to name their favorite The Leading Lady leading lady, chances are they’ll respond right away with “Sybil Seely.” Charming, natural and gracefully spirited, the brunette ingénue appeared in only five shorts with Buster but has been leaving a fresh Project impression on viewers ever since. Even with all the praise, little has been known about Sybil. Who was this young woman who just happened to enhance some of the greatest short comedies of all time? She was a California girl, born Sybil Travilla on January 2, 1900, only a couple of days into the start of the 20th century. Her parents were Harry Richard Travilla and his wife Lucie Travilla, of French, English and Scottish descent. Sybil was the second youngest of seven children: Edith, Guy, Jack, Ford, Elaine and Connie. The Travillas lived in the Los Angeles area, mostly in San Bernardino. They also lived briefly on Catalina Island, a small island off the coast which was later considered a playground for Hollywood’s elite. Pennsylvania-born Harry Travilla was a businessman, described by one local paper as “one of the most gentlemanly men it has been our good fortune to meet for some time.” He was at various times a hotel- keeper, the owner of a saloon called The Office and a tire dealer. Sybil had an athletic family. All three of her broth- ers were champion swimmers who had participated in numerous competitions in Catalina.
