Chairman’s Statement

What has become clear is that the Princeton track and cross country program is now taking on a national presence as never before. Princeton has always had performers on the national stage: , David Pellegrini, Augie Wolf, , , Al Dyer, Craig Masback, Lynn Jennings, Ashley Higginson, Nicole Harrison and Debbie St. Phard. What is happening now is that our presence on the national stage is becoming more frequent. This has profound implications for Princeton, the program and certainly our student athletes. After lengthy conversations with the coaches it’s clear that the financial support from Friends has had a dramatic impact on recruiting and performance. As such, know that your contributions are having the impact that you want and deserve. Our coaching staff from top to bottom may be the best in the country. We know Princeton is. With that package and proper funding our dominance and national presence can be assured to continue. On behalf of the coaches, our student athletes and the board, may I respectfully thank you for your contributions last year and ask you for your continued support this year. Enjoy Tiger Tracks. It’s a great read. It tells the story about one of Princeton’s finest athletic programs. GO TIGERS!!!!

Financial Report for 2012-13

We cannot express enough our deep gratitude for another year of generous contributions in 2012-13. Your overwhelming support for our student-athletes, coaches and support staff is appreciated by all. Please continue your essential support of the men’s and women’s programs as we again look forward to another successful year of Princeton track. We raised a total of $180,203 from 448 donors for 15.8% participation. A special thank you to Tony Yoseloff ’96 and Lora Robertson ’92 for their leadership gifts and matching gift challenge that took us to new levels. Below is a summary of revenues and expenses for the year. Your donations helped to underwrite expenses that the University does not or cannot cover, such as the 2011 trip to Greece. We believe that these expenses contribute importantly to the remarkable achievements and experiences of individual Princeton athletes and their teams. Specifics of the 2012-13 year are provided beneath the Contributions Report. If you have a question about any line or need further explanation, please email me at [email protected].

We Need Your Support

The activities listed under expenses would not be possible without your support. The University underwrites fully only those expenses associated with Ivy League, Heptagonal, IC4A/ECAC and NCAA competition. The Penn Relays and meets with local colleges. It will not underwrite fully the following expenses: • Team participation in international meets such as the trip to Greece in 2011. • Team participation in special meets, such as the cross country Pre-Nationals. • Individual participation in special high caliber competition meets at a distance such as Mt. Sac Relays. • Spring training expense in warmer locals. Again, an endowment fund, the Peter Morgan Spring Trip Fund, established in 2000 by Buzz and Barbara Taylor, provides substantial support for the spring training trips for the men and women. • Most recruiting expenses. • Expense for awards and dinners/picnics at season end and recognition for championship teams. Again we now have several endowments which fund several awards (Bonthron, Kramer, Morgan, McGraw, Myers, Rosengarten) but some awards and related expense are not covered. • Newsletters and other alumni communications. • Receptions for and recognition of officials, receptions for alumni and parents. • Special events such as those in recent years to honor Larry Ellis and Sam Howell. • Salaries and benefits for part-time coaches (partially funded by the University). Funding these activities annually has contributed significantly to Princeton’s many team championships in the past 35 years. Your continued support is essential to maintaining and improving the level of success achieved by 150 men and women annually. Building on a promising 2012-13, we are sustaining a high standard for participation and contributions in 2013-14. We take great pride in continuing to be one of the most supportive Friends groups at the University, and your pride as parents and alumni is a big boost to our student-athletes. Please consider supporting the teams financially this year, if you have not done so in the past year or years, or continuing your generous support if you have been a contributor. Your gifts make a difference. You may send back the enclosed contribution card or make a gift online at http://makeagift.princeton.edu/athletics (select “Friends of Track & Field/CC” from the drop-down menu). 7 August 2013 Tiger Tracks

Charles Forlidas ’89

Charles Forlidas was turned away from high jumping in seventh grade. The coaches told him to find another . Two years later, Forlidas saw a board in the locker room that listed all the best performances and there was a guy jumping 5-10. Standing at 6-4, Forlidas knew he could do better and went out to jump 6-4 his junior year and placed third in the state. His senior year he won states with a 6-10 jump. Although Forlidas had applied early admission to Princeton, his high jumping helped land him a spot in the Class of 1989. Decathlete Peter Hunt who was already excelling at Princeton, and would later earn All-America honors, was from the same high school as Forlidas. Princeton was quite a change for the small town boy from the South, but he quickly made an impact during his first indoor season. “The only good thing I did freshman year was that I finished sixth at indoor Heps in 1986,” Forlidas said. He explains that Princeton beat Cornell by ¾ of point to win Heps for the first time since 1982. Finishing in a three- way tie, Forlidas earned 1 ¾ points and the dubbed him the “hero of Heps.” It started a run of four straight Heps titles for the Tigers. Forlidas won outdoor Heps three times and indoor Heps once. He ranked second all-time at Princeton in the high jump outdoors at 7-3.25 (2.22) and is fourth all-time indoor at 7-1.75 (2.18). Tora Harris ’02, a fellow Southerner, who Forlidas helped recruit out of Atlanta, holds both records. Post-Princeton, Forlidas took a year off before starting law school at University of Tennessee, where he became a graduate assistant coach of the track team and met his wife Suzanne. At Tennessee Forlidas coached high jumper Randy Jenkin, who won the NCAAs indoor in 1993 hitting 7-5.75 before training through cancer his junior year. Jenkins then won NCAAs again both indoor and outdoor in 1994, reaching 7-7 both times, during a medical redshirt year. Forlidas also continued to compete in open meets. “My goal was to make the Olympic Trials in 1992 but I missed by 2-3 centimeters. While I was good, I was never going to make a living at it.” “My wife finished first in our class and I was No. 3 or 4, so I knew who to study with,” Forlidas joked. “She told me that everybody hated me in law school because I was so happy to be back in school. I had taken a year off Forlidas is a first-time grandfather to five-month old Savannah. and now I was back in school and going to track practice every day. I got to eat in the athlete’s dining hall. I was really happy.” Suzanne, now an associate general counsel for Coca Cola Enterprises, returned to law school as a second career. When she and Charles married, he inherited two teenage step sons. The pair are enjoying being first- time grandparents to five-month old baby Savannah. They make the trip from Atlanta to Knoxville every other week. “I never did the little kid thing because my step sons were 15 and 16 when we got married. Having a baby is something I never had the pleasure of experiencing.” The couple have also taken up golf, but Forlidas admits he doesn’t have the knack for that as he does high jumping. “It’s very frustrating. Golf is something I do not have a natural affinity for.” Forlidas joined Miller Martin in Chattanooga right out of Tennessee and made the move to Atlanta in 1998 when Suzanne was hired away from Miller Martin by Coca Cola. Forlidas works in the areas of trademarks & patents and franchising. “When I started at Miller Martin in Chattanooga we (his wife and he) were the 46th and 47th attorneys but still relatively small. There was a guy who did patents and trademarks and another did franchising. They were both odd but I could get along with just about anybody. So I started working for both of them so I have a combination practice.” Miller Martin represents midsize, growing businesses and market themselves towards that middle market. It makes for a much more relaxed and congenial atmosphere. Forlidas’ winning jump at the Adidas Princeton Invitational in 1988. “I was lucky to get in at the right place. You hear about law firms having a lot of associates and a few partners. We have a reverse pyramid. We have a lot of partners. Out of 130 attorneys we have 20 or so associates. It’s been a really great place to practice.” “But I still wish I could have made a living high jumping.” 17 August 2013 Tiger Tracks

Kristin Beaney-Chisum ’94 One of the most prolific distance runners in Princeton history is Kristin Beaney ’94. She is one of just two athletes in program history (along with Emily Kroshus ’04) to earn three All-America honors in each season during the same academic year. Although a two-time first-team All-Ivy League runner in cross country, Beaney-Chisum didn’t make the NCAAs until her senior year in 1993. “I was nervous before the race,” Beaney-Chisum recounts. She was in a new atmosphere and among a different caliber of harrier. “Peter told me to just go out there and run my race. I think he and I were both surprised by how high I finished,” she said about her 15th-place finish. Beaney-Chisum followed up that season by earning her second Heps Indoor Athlete of the Meet honor, after receiving the award her junior year as well. She won the distance double taking the 5k and 10k, and did the same during outdoors when she posted wins in both the 3k and 5k. In total, Beaney-Chisum won six individual Heps titles during her career at Princeton. Nationally, she reached the finals of the indoor 5k in 1994 and finished eighth in the nation with a 17:07.18. Outdoors she did even better, placing sixth in the 5k at 16:43.58. The first ever recipient of the Varsity Rosengarten Cross Country Trophy in 1993, Beaney-Chisum was also the recipient of the Nancy Kraemer Women’s Track Award in 1994. Track was her life at Princeton, and she shared it with her parents. Nearly an extension of the team, her parents Bruce and Barbara never missed a meet, no matter where it was. They continued following Beaney- Chisum’s post-collegiate running career. After graduating Beaney-Chisum moved to Boston. “It was the pre-Internet era and I didn’t know about how many running Beaney-Chisum is one of just two athletes in program his- clubs there were out there, and all the running that I could take part in post tory to earn All-America honors in each of three seasons in college.” one academic year. With the help of Peter Farrell, Beaney-Chisum found a running club. It was through her running club that she met her husband Jamie, an assistant principal at a high school near their Newton, Mass. home.
