OCTOBER 2019

The Riverdale NEWSLETTER YM-YWHA Senior Center

From The Director Wishing everyone a Sweet and Healthy New Year. This month we will be closed for the Jewish New Year and many other important Jewish Holidays. But we still have a packed schedule of pro- grams and activities. In response to member’s requests we will try throughout the year to celebrate a variety of cultural holidays with special menus and events. We celebrated the Jewish Holidays in September with our annual Rosh Hashana Luncheon. For October, we plan to celebrate Spanish Heritage Month with a special meal and Flamenco Dancers on Friday October 4. We are also resuming several popular programs this fall in response to member’s requests. Our choral group, Improv Class, and Sculpture class will all start up again. These classes are not in our regular budget. Instead they are being sponsored by Senior Center fundraisers and members’ do- nations. For the first time in State citizens can vote before election day. Early voting starts Oc- tober 26 and runs through election day, Tuesday November 5. While this is considered an off year for key candidates, there are some important proposals on the ballot such as revisions to the Council. I will post and announce information about the ballot proposals and early vot- ing as we get closer to the October start date. When possible we are asking our members to call Center staff directly instead of calling the Y’s receptionist and asking to be transferred. Staff direct dial phone numbers are on the back of the newsletter. You can also call our main number and ask for a dial by name directory. Again, Happy and Healthy New Year.

Be on the lookout … The Riverdale Y Senior Center Cookbook is going to press later this year. Many of your friends and fellow members have shared recipes that have special meaning to them – and not only that, they’re yummy! Cookbooks go on sale in December, in time for you to buy them as holiday gifts for friends and family. The price will be $10. The Cookbook is our latest fundraising effort. We use your fundraising dollars to pay for your favorite classes, including the Chorus, Improv and Ceramics classes we are bringing back this fall. All Cookbook profits we make after printing costs will go into our Senior Center Fundraising Ac- count. To support our work, starting October 16, we will also offer $10 Sponsorships of the Cookbook. For this $10 contribution, we will list you in the book as a Sponsor, and will include the one- or two-line message of your choice – for example, In honor of [name of person or organization], In memory of [loved one’s name], or In appreciation of [name of person or organization]. You are also free to choose your own message, of course. As always, we are appreciative of your help and support, The Cookbook Committee

CAREGIVERS WEEKLY SUPPORT GROUP RESUMES STARTING MONDAY, OCTOBER 21, 2019.

When a loved one becomes ill and you are the primary caregiver, it can be an overwhelming responsibility, both physically and emotionally. Our Caregivers Support Group provides a safe space to express our feelings, our concerns, our questions. You may be faced with issues you never anticipated or may not understand. In a caregiver support group, members validate each other’s experiences. It can be a relief to know that what you’re feeling and experiencing is normal and you are not alone. See Lydia to discuss if this support group would meet your needs.

HEALTH BUCKS! Health Bucks are $2 coupons redeemable for fresh fruits and vegetables at all NYC farmers markets. They help make fresh, locally-grown produce more affordable for New Yorkers and support neighborhood farmers markets and regional farmers. I have coupons which can be redeemed at our local Farmers Markets through December 31st. Come see me for your coupons and a list of the Markets closest to us.
