May – June:: Pupation Oct – April: Larvae overwinter as pre-pupa Host range in insects • The host range is the number of species utilized by an insect species; narrow range=specialist, broad range=generalist •A host range expansion is an increase in the number of host species utilized by an insect species •A host shift is the addition of a new host to the diet of a species, with a concomitant reduction in the ability to use its ancestral host(s) Ecological fitting • When organisms encounter novel environmental conditions - a new habitat, a changed climate, novel hosts - they survive and persist where and if they "fit" by means of characteristics they already possess. • Host shifts are often initiated because the pest is “preadapted” to the novel host. Chionanthus retusus Chinese Fringetree Our native (southeastern U. S. ) fringetree (Chionanthus virginicus) is fairly well known, even though not widely used as a landscape plant in our area. Its oriental relative, Chionanthus retnsus, is even less used, probably because its flowers and inflorescences are smaller. But the overall effect of C. retusus in bloom is almost as spectacular as that of C. virginicus (Plate I). In addition, it can be grown with minimal pruning, while C. virginicus requires heavy pruning every few years to maintain good form. The largest specimen of C. retusus m the Arnold Arboretum is about 20 feet tall and resembles a miniature American elm in outline. This and its interesting furrowed bark keep this tree interesting during the winter months (Plates I and II).

    Selecting juglone-tolerant plants Landscaping Near Black Walnut Trees Black walnut trees (Juglans nigra) can be very attractive in the home landscape when grown as shade trees, reaching a potential height of 100 feet. The walnuts they produce are a food source for squirrels, other wildlife and people as well. However, whether a black walnut tree already exists on your property or you are considering planting one, be aware that black walnuts produce juglone. This is a natural but toxic chemical they produce to reduce competition for resources from other plants. This natural self-defense mechanism can be harmful to nearby plants causing “walnut wilt.” Having a walnut tree in your landscape, however, certainly does not mean the landscape will be barren. Not all plants are sensitive to juglone. Many trees, vines, shrubs, ground covers, annuals and perennials will grow and even thrive in close proximity to a walnut tree. Production and Effect of Juglone Toxicity Juglone, which occurs in all parts of the black walnut tree, can affect other plants by several means: Stems Through root contact Leaves Through leakage or decay in the soil Through falling and decaying leaves When rain leaches and drips juglone from leaves Nuts and hulls and branches onto plants below. All North American species of ash tested so far are susceptible to it, but there are no published reports of this insect developing fully in non-ash hosts in the field in North America. I report here evidence that emerald ash borer can attack and complete development in white fringetree, Chionanthus virginicus L., a species native to the southeastern United States that is also planted ornamentally. Four of 20 mature ornamental white fringetrees examined in the Dayton, Ohio area showed external symptoms of emerald ash borer attack, including the presence of adult exit holes, canopy dieback, and bark splitting and other deformities. Removal of bark from one of these trees yielded evidence of at least three generations of usage by emerald ash borer larvae, several actively feeding live larvae, and a dead adult confirmed as emerald ash borer.
