A Note on the St. John Co-Cathedral Marble Tombstones: The Artisans, Foreign and Maltese John Debono One cannot but feel hesitant in writing on the tombstones, masterpieces of marble, much like varied marquetry work in St John's when one can consult the long standing volume 'The Church of St John in Valletta' by Hannibal Scicluna, a composition which must necessarily remain an excellent and remarkable publication.! The aim of this brief study is to modestly review the documentation principally in the notarial archives concerning the tombstones, mainly in the period 1678 to 1819 and the marble craftsmen, local and foreign, who executed their masterpieces so expertly (see Table 1). Though it has been only possible to trace in those documentary archives evidence for some eighteen tombstones, it is to be presumed that most of the others largely followed a similar pattern of commissioning: i) some form of contract or a privately written agreement stipulating the names of the parties, ii) a time-limit set for the undertaking, iii) the price to be eventually paid at times in instalments or otherwise in full on termination of work, and iv) the supply of designs, none of which could be traced. One may wonder at the paucity of recorded public deeds that could be traced, when it was so customary to resort to such means in similar dealings between customer and supplier of services. It could be that some tomb stones were of foreign workmanship and then transhipped to Malta. Private agreements would render it difficult or impossible for future posterity to discover the documentation. -

Nicolò Isouard (1773-1818) is considered Malta’s national composer. After studies in France and Naples, he returned to his homeland, where from 1794 to 1798 he was an aspiring composer, and employee of the Order of Malta. In 1994 a collection of thirty-three autographs of hitherto unknown sacred music by Isouard appeared at the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, and I recognised the importance of these manuscripts. My intentions are to provide a précis on the Order, as the sovereign entity ruling Malta at the time, and the sacred music composed for them in their great Conventual Church in Valletta – now St John’s Co-Cathedral. The thesis will provide the background to Isouard’s early career and a complete edition and commentary of all of his sacred music, including additional works found during the research process, and a catalogue of his stage works. -

It includes thirteen localities – Ħ’Attard, Ħal Balzan Birkirkara, il-Gżira, l-Iklin, Ħal Lija, l-Imsida, Tal- Pietà, San Ġwann, Tas-Sliema, San Ġiljan, Santa Venera, and Ta’ Xbiex. The Region has an area of about 25km2 and a populations of about 130,574 (2017) which constitutes 28.36 percent of the population of the country. This population occupies about 8 percent of the whole area of the Maltese Islands which means that the density is of around 6,635 persons per km2. The coat-of-arms of the Central Region was granted in 2014 (L.N. 364 of 2014). The shield has a blue field signifying the Mediterranean Sea in which there are thirteen bezants or golden disks representing the thirteen municipalities forming the Region. The blazon is Azure thirteen bezants 3, 3, 3, 3 and 1, all ensigned by a mural coronet of five eschaugettes and a sally port Or. -

Introduction In this paper, we present the results of Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) measurements performed in the church of the Jesuits in Valletta, Malta, during the International Training School on “Ground- Penetrating Radar for civil engineering and archaeology” organised by the COST (European COoperation in Science and Technology) Action TU1208 “Civil engineering applications of Ground Penetrating Radar” (Pajewski and Benedetto, 2013) and held in The University of Malta on January 25-29, 2016. The Jesuits' church (in Maltese Knisja tal-Ġiżwiti) is one of the oldest and largest churches in Valletta. It was re-built in the 17th century, after an explosion caused serious damage to the previous church and the adjacent college. Four streets bound the site. In Fig. 1(a), a map showing the location of the church is reported. St Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Society of Jesus in 1534, had considered founding a college in Malta in 1553. Ignatius hoped for Jesuit vocations from Malta: He had been informed that the Maltese spoke Arabic and thought they would make excellent missionaries in North Africa among Muslims. However, the idea of a college in Malta did not materialise in Ignatius’s lifetime: It was 1592 when Pope Clement VIII solicited the setting up of a Jesuit college and church in Malta; Grandmaster Martin Garzez laid the Foundation Stone of the Collegium Melitense on 4 September 1595. The present church was built according to the plan and design of the architect and engineer Francesco Buonamici from Lucca: It was the first work on the island of Malta to be designed by an architect of international repute. -

ArcHistoR anno IV (2017) n. 7 Architettura e trasformazioni urbane di Mdina durante il regno del Gran Maestro Anton Manoel de Vilhena (1722-1736) Conrad Thake [email protected] Le origini della città fortificata di Mdina risalgono al periodo romano, anche se i suoi attuali confini furono definiti durante l’occupazione araba di Malta (870-1090 c.). In epoca medievale, durante il dominio aragonese (1283-1530), Mdina o la Città Notabile come era allora conosciuta, fiorì e prosperò come il principale insediamento urbano dell’isola. Tuttavia, con l’arrivo sull’isola dell’Ordine di San Giovanni, nel corso del XVI e XVII secolo Mdina declinò e perse la sua preminenza politica ed economica a vantaggio della nuova “Città dell’Ordine”, Valletta. Questo contributo esamina l’impatto del terremoto del 1693 sulla città e l’impegno profuso dalla Chiesa locale nell’opera di ricostruzione nel tentativo di consolidarne il prestigio di antica sede episcopale. La ricostruzione della vecchia cattedrale medievale e la nuova edificazione del palazzo vescovile, e più tardi del seminario, fu parte integrante di una impresa architettonica che il Capitolo della cattedrale condusse con l’obiettivo di rafforzare la sua presenza all’interno della città. Tuttavia nel 1722, con l’elezione del Gran Maestro portoghese Anton Manoel de Vilhena (1722-1736), l’Ordine di San Giovanni dimostrò per la prima volta un reale interesse a intervenire entro la città murata. Vilhena avviò un vasto programma di rinnovamento urbano, riconfigurando tutta la zona di ingresso di Mdina, con la costruzione in stile barocco dell’imponente Palazzo Magistrale e Corte Capitanale e della Banca Giuratale.
