Appointment of Clergy Office Holders a Guide To
Appointment of clergy office holders A guide to good practice Produced in support of the Ecclesiastical Offices (Terms of Service) Measure 2009 Prepared by TSIP in 2013 for final approval by the Standing Committee of the House of Bishops and updated by RACSC in February 2015 Foreword 1. The process by which people are chosen for particular roles is one of the most important and sensitive in all institutions. The Church of England has, for many years, invested significantly in well resourced and nationally agreed arrangements for discerning the vocation of those called to ordained ministry. But, for a variety of reasons the Church of England has traditionally found it much more difficult to reflect nationally on the processes which come later, once someone is due to be considered for a parochial clergy appointment. 2. There have been a number of reasons for this reticence. The most obvious is the sheer fragmentation of responsibility for making appointments in a church with some 13,000 parishes. The Church of England is not a legal entity and is made up of many different bodies; in many ways it has more the qualities of an organism than an organization. 3. In addition, the patronage system, though much reformed over the years, has continued to make the practical operation of parochial appointments within the Church of England more complex than in many other institutions. In the appointment of incumbents, it remains the patron who has the right of initiative, though an appointment cannot proceed without the consent both of the bishop and of the two parochial representatives. -

The origins of the Ukrainian Catholic Church lie in the time when much of present-day Ukraine formed part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. It was then, in 1596, that for a variety of reasons, many of the Orthodox bishops of the region decided to accept communion with Rome.(1) After almost four hundred years the resulting Union of Brest remains a contentious subject.(2) The new "Uniate" Church formally recognized the Pope as Head of the Church, but maintained its traditional Byzantine or eastern rite, calendar, its right to ordain married men as priests, and its right to elect its own bishops. -

Measuring and Modelling Demographic Trends in Malta: Implications for Ageing Policy
International Journal on Ageing in Developing Countries, 2019, 4 (2): 78-90 Measuring and Modelling Demographic Trends in Malta: Implications for Ageing Policy Marvin Formosa1 Abstract. Malta’s population experienced a sharp ageing transition due to increasing and decreasing levels of life expectancy and fertility rates respectively. This article reviews demographic changes relating to population ageing that took place in Malta, and future population projections which anticipate even higher numbers and percentages of older persons. At end of 2017, 18.8% of the total population, or 89,517 persons, were aged 65-plus. The largest share is made up of women, with 53.4% of the total. The sex ratios for cohorts aged 65-plus and 80-plus in 2013 numbered 83 and 60 respectively. Population projections indicate clearly that Malta will be one of the fastest ageing countries in the European Union. the (Maltese) percentage of children (0-14) of the total population is projected to increase slightly from 14.5% to 15.4% (+0.9%), whilst the working-age population (15-64) will experience dramatic decrease, from 68 to 56.1% (-11.9%). On the other hand, the older population segment will incur extraordinary increases. The 65-plus/80-plus population will reach 28.5%/10.5% of the total population in 2060, from 17.5%/3.8% in 2013 (+11.0/6.7%). The ageing-related challenges that the Maltese government that is currently facing traverse three key overlapping areas of policy boundaries and include the labour market, health care, and long-term care. There will also be policy issues which, if not immediate, will certainly need to be addressed in the foreseeable future. -

THE CONFESSOR's AUTHORITY the Catholic Church Meets
CHAPTER THREE THE CONFESSOR'S AUTHORITY The Catholic Church meets people's need for authority and abso lution with its doctrine on the penance sacrament and its teaching that the priest possesses divine qualities to administer the sacrament and exercise moral authority. During the ceremony of ordination, God Himself has made a priest the instrument of His power in this world. Thus, the priest is endowed with a character indelebilis which distinguishes him from all secular persons and qualifies him to carry out his mission as intercessor between God and Man, indeed even to deputize for God among mortals. A Catholic writer has said that the priest shows his extraordinary qualities as director of souls by his "apostolic zeal, knowledge of God's ways and supernatural wisdom". 1 But those gifts are not enough for a priest when he officiates in the penance sacrament. They could have their effect also outside that sacrament. As administrator of the sacrament he possesses a special and divine instinct: this shows him the way when he instructs penitents on remedies for their sins and gives them guidance on their future conduct. 2 Such an image of the priest's high office is inculcated in Catholics by their creed itself. A good Catholic accepts a priest's authority; consequently he is prepared in advance to follow confessional advice and to comply in all matters with directions as to his way of life. 3 This maintenance of clerical authority has an integral place in the structure of Roman Catholic doctrine. It is connected there both with the concept of the Church as a whole and with teaching on the sacraments. -
The Holy See
The Holy See PASTORAL VISIT OF THE HOLY FATHER BENEDICT XVI TO "ST JOHN THE BAPTIST" ROMAN HOSPITAL OF THE SOVEREIGN MILITARY HOSPITALLER ORDER OF MALTA HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI First Sunday of Advent, 2 December 2007 Dear Brothers and Sisters, "Let us go to the house of the Lord!". These words that we repeated in the response of the Responsorial Psalm clearly express the feelings that fill our hearts today, the First Sunday of Advent. The reason why we can go ahead joyfully, as the Apostle Paul has exhorted us, lies in the fact that our salvation is now at hand. The Lord is coming! With this knowledge we set out on the journey of Advent, preparing ourselves to celebrate with faith the extraordinary event of the Lord's birth. In the coming weeks, day after day the liturgy will offer for our reflection Old Testament texts that recall the lively, constant desire that kept alive in the Jewish people the expectation of the Messiah's coming. Watchful in prayer, let us too seek to prepare our hearts to receive the Lord, who will come to show us his mercy and give us his salvation. Precisely during this time of waiting, Advent is a season of hope, and it is to Christian hope that I wished to dedicate my second Encyclical, officially presented the day before yesterday; it begins with the words St Paul addressed to the Christians of Rome: "Spe salvi facti sumus - in hope we were saved" (Rom 8: 24). In the Encyclical, I write among other things that "we need the greater and lesser hopes that keep us going day by day. -
