we are students we are teachers we are performers we are creators we are storytellers we are explorers we are the rncm

we are migrants Migration has been in the DNA of the RNCM from its earliest roots, when in 1893 the German-born conductor Sir Charles Hallé realised his vision of founding a Northern conservatoire which became the Royal Manchester College of Music. Ever since then, musicians have migrated to this city from all over the world to study, teach and perform here.

Move forward to 2019/20 and the RNCM now has over 950 students from 55 countries, each with their own unique experience of migration. #WeAreMigrants celebrates the stories and creative output of musicians past and present who have left their homes, through choice or necessity, and explores the impact of migration on their music and on their adopted countries. 10 Fri 24 – Sun 26 Jan RNCM BRASS BAND FESTIVAL This year’s RNCM Brass Band Festival promises to be one of the most exciting since its inception as the Festival of Brass at BBC Manchester 30 years ago. We welcome world-class soloists - including LSO Principal Trumpet Philip Cobb, tuba virtuoso Les Neish, two of Black Dyke Band’s outstanding soloists Katrina Marzella (baritone horn) and Brett Baker (trombone) - plus six leading UK bands, as well as the Greater Manchester Youth Band, not to mention the RNCM’s own outstanding brass students. We’ll be celebrating milestone birthdays of two major creators of brass band repertoire, Edward Gregson (75 in July) and Philip Wilby (70 last year). There are also world and UK premières from young and more seasoned composers, among them Christopher Gunning - whose work you may have heard on ITV’s Poirot.

21 Fri 07 Feb // 7.30pm // RNCM Theatre VIDEO JAM In an age of mass displacement, what does it mean to feel ‘at home’? Video Jam presents five commissioned short films by artists based around the world, each scored by a different UK composer, reflecting on home and history, desire and estrangement, nationhood and mythology, extinction and exile. The event will explore and re-imagine a variety of indeterminate, contested or hidden spaces: deserted opera houses in the Middle East and incomplete cityscapes in Eastern Europe, ancient mythological hinterlands and places now only accessible via Google Maps. While the film programme boldly bridges the gap between cinema and artist moving image, premiering new works by Saodat Ismailova, Joe Namy, Christin Turner, Razan AlSalah and Oleksiy Radynski, the RNCM stage will be co-inhabited by an eclectic mix of approaches to sound and music, including Lafawndah, Nabihah Iqbal, Seaming To, CHAINES and RNCM composer Alexia Sloane. Douglas Boyd, Clark Rundell, Harish Shankar, Ellie Slorach conductors In their review of the LSO’s 2018 UK première of the Genesis Suite conducted by Simon Rattle, the Guardian described the piece as: ‘the most fascinating work you’ve never heard of.’ Praise indeed! 1945: the world is reeling from war and persecution on a scale never seen before. Nathaniel Shilkret, himself a second-generation Jewish immigrant, took a break from writing film scores to plan this collaborative seven-part work with two benevolent purposes - on one hand to galvanise American morale with a stirring musical work accompanying a narration of the , on the other, to provide refugee composers with paid work. The result? A work of incredible ambition with political themes that still resonate today – stories of displaced peoples, broken promises and destruction. The Genesis Suite displays an unsurprising mix of styles and influences, with Schoenberg’s evocative opening, nods to Hollywood and inspired flashes throughout. Our performance will be conducted by Clark Rundell alongside two former RNCM conductors, Harish Shankar and Ellie Slorach, rapidly making their names in the profession, and we’ll be working with students from MMU’s School of Art who’ll be creating original artwork as backdrops for each of the seven movements. The programme also features Dvořák’s towering masterpiece, a work that heralded a new dawn for American music. The clue is in the subtitle, From the New World. It very much looks back, from the USA, to Dvořák’s native Bohemia, as if the composer is standing at the feet of the Statue of Liberty, desperately looking to see if he can make out his faraway homeland.
