  • The Symbolic Significance of the String-Course in Orthodox Sacred Architecture
European Journal of Science and Theology, June 2007, Vol.3, No.2, 61-70 _______________________________________________________________________ THE SYMBOLIC SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STRING-COURSE IN ORTHODOX SACRED ARCHITECTURE Mihaela Palade* University Bucharest, Faculty of Orthodox Theology, Department of Sacred Art, Str. Sf. Ecaterina nr. 2,040155 Bucharest IV, Romania (Received 7 May 2007) Abstract A brief analysis of the decorative system peculiar to Romanian sacred architecture leads to singling out an element that distinctly stands out, being present in the overwhelming majority of the respective worship places. It is the string-course, a protruding ornament that circumscribes the median part of the façade and is made of various materials: stone, brick, plaster. At first sight it appears to be an agreeable, ingenious aesthetic solution, since the horizontal line it emphasizes enters into a pleasant dialogue with the vertical arches, windows, pillars and other upright elements. The present essay points out that this element is not a mere aesthetic device, but has a deep symbolic significance related to that of the church it girdles. Keywords: girding one’s waist with the belt, the Church – Christ’s mystical body, string- course, girding one with strength Motto: Thou hast turned for me my mourning into dancing; Thou hast loosed my sackcloth, And girded me with gladness. (Psalm 29/30.10, 11) 1. The presence of the string-course in the Orthodox sacred architecture; types and variations exemplified within the Romanian area In the Byzantine architecture, one or several horizontal profiles mark the outside decoration, surrounding the façade either from end to end or only partially.

  • Moldavia and Maramureş – Micro-Destinations for Relaunching the Romanian Tourism*
Theoretical and Applied Economics Volume XVIII (2011), No. 10(563), pp. 45-56 Moldavia and Maramureş – Micro-destinations * for Relaunching the Romanian Tourism Aurelia-Felicia STĂNCIOIU Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies [email protected] Ion PÂRGARU “Polytechnica” University of Bucharest [email protected] Nicolae TEODORESCU Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies [email protected] Anca-Daniela VLĂDOI Bucharest Academy of Economic Studies [email protected] Monica Paula RAŢIU Romanian American University of Bucharest [email protected] Abstract. Since Romania holds a rich tourism heritage and a great tourism potential, the tourism division into zones was drawn up as “a possibility toward a superior and complex development of the tourism resources, in a unified vision…” (Erdeli, Gheorghilaş, 2006, p. 264), this representing a permanent concern of the specialists from all fields that are related to the tourism management. Although the criteria for selection and ranking of the tourist attractions have been the subject of some controversies, regarding the types of tourism that can be practiced in these areas, there were arrived almost unanimous conclusions. In order to ensure the representativeness and considering that all historical regions of the contemporary Romania are to the same extent micro- destinations with a substantial “tourism heritage”, the regions of Moldavia (including Bukovina) and Maramureş were merged into one for the elaboration of the research that presents, in essence, the main types of tourism and a part of the treasury of Romanian age-old heritage. Keywords: tourism destination; tourism micro-destination; destination image; regional tourism brand; type of tourism; destination marketing. JEL Code: M31.

Abstract: In the last century nationalism as a spiritual element – according to the 1919 state- ment of the historian, archaeologist and philosopher Vasile Pârvan – was a blessed plant grown on Romanian soil during the ’48 revolution, the ’59 union under Prince Cuza, the ’77 war of independence and the preparation of such a national project as the Union with the Romanian Kingdom of several Romanian-speaking provinces dominated by two em- pires – the Austrian and the Russian – epitomized by Transylvania which came finally to the motherland on the 1st of December 1918, the same day when the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes was born. In the nationalism project, the Union Transylvania was a political priority. But we must add immediately that in the events of 1914–1916 in the neighbourhood of Romania a symbol of the national struggle became what Nicolae Iorga, in a famous lecture of 1915, called “the heroic and martyr Serbia”. Keywords: nationalism, Romania, Transylvania, Nicolae Iorga sed for the first time on the 4th of July 1892 by Maurice Barrès in his Uarticle “La querelle des nationalistes et des cosmopolites” in Le Figaro, the word “nationalism” was employed by the interwar and post 1945 dictatorship regimes of Central and Eastern Europe on several occasions in the twentieth century.

Kiseleff 32 Bucharest Romania , Herastrau Anyone who still thinks that Bucharest is a city of concrete and cement has clearly never been to the city’s lung, the incomparable Herastrau Park. Quite simply, this glorious park, spread over 187 hectares around Herastrau lake is one of the jewels in Bucharest’s crown, which might explain why half of the city chooses to spend its summer Sunday afternoons here. Herastrau was laid out from 1930-36 on what had until then been mainly marshland around the (natural) lake. The Village Museum - which occupies a large part of Herastrau and which is one of its most popular attractions was created at the same time. As early as the late 19th century, however, parts of the lakeshore served as a promenade for Bucharest’s wealthy, and the area surrounding the lake had long since become the most fashionable in the city. Indeed, the residence of Romania’s royal family, the Elisabeta Palace, is found inside Herastrau (although it is closed to the public). The name Herastrau has been in general use since the early 1960s. Herastrau was long neglected in the wake of the Romanian revolution of 1989, as the priorities of a country in transition lie elsewhere. In recent times however, the park has enjoyed much investment and has for a couple of years now once again been able to claim the title of the city’s best.
