Buenos Aires, 2010 PATRONES ALTITUDINALES EN LA DIVERSIDAD DE COLEÓPTEROS Y HORMIGAS EPÍGEOS DEL NOROESTE DE LA PATAGONIA ARGENTINA RESUMEN: Se estudió la influencia de factores metodológicos y biológicos sobre los patrones altitudinales en la diversidad de artrópodos, con énfasis en coleópteros y hormigas. A escala global, un meta-análisis de 109 gradientes publicados mostró que el patrón altitudinal en la riqueza de especies de artrópodos tiene múltiples formas, aunque la percepción del patrón puede estar influida por el método empleado para identificar la forma y la calidad de los datos. A escala local, un estudio de campo realizado en cinco montañas, en el noroeste de la Patagonia argentina, mostró cambios altitudinales en la composición de ensambles de especies de coleópteros y hormigas asociados a distintas variables ambientales y una subdivisión fina de los ambientes. Los patrones altitudinales en la riqueza de especies y abundancia de individuos difirieron sustancialmente entre coleópteros y hormigas. Se confirmó la alta diversidad de coleópteros, y la baja diversidad de hormigas. Ambos taxa mostraron la dominancia de pocas especies muy abundantes y muchas especies raras. Distintos factores ambientales explicaron variaciones locales en la diversidad en distintos ambientes del gradiente altitudinal, y afectaron de manera diferencial a coleópteros y hormigas. PALABRAS CLAVE: GRADIENTES ALTITUDINALES, PATAGONIA, INSECTOS, META-ANÁLISIS, DIVERSIDAD. - i - ALTITUDINAL DIVERSITY PATTERNS IN EPIGAEGIC BEETLES AND ANTS FROM NORTH-WESTERN PATAGONIA, ARGENTINA ABSTRACT: This study analysed the influence of methodological and biological factors on the altitudinal diversity patterns in arthropods, with emphasis in beetles and ants. At global scale, a meta-analysis of 109 published gradients showed that the altitudinal pattern in arthropod richness has multiple forms, although the perception of the pattern can be influenced by the method used to identify the form and the quality of basic data. At local scale, a field-study developed in five mountains, in north-western Patagonia, Argentina, showed altitudinal changes in the composition of beetle’s and ant’s species assemblages, associated with different environmental variables, and a fine subdivision of environments. The altitudinal patterns in the species richness and abundance of individuals differed substantially between beetles and ants. The high diversity of beetles and the low diversity of ants were confirmed. Both taxa showed the dominance of a few, very abundant species, and a lot of rare species. Different environmental factors accounted for local variations in diversity in different environments along the altitudinal gradient, and differentially affected beetles and ants. Los coleópteros de la familia Carabidae conforman gran parte de la biodiversidad de los suelos de los agroecosistemas y por eso son buenos organismos modelo para estudiar la composición y la estructura de las comunidades. Los objetivos de este trabajo fueron: a) analizar la diversidad de Carabidae (riqueza, actividad, composición y estructura del ensamble) en ambientes con distinto uso antrópico; b) conocer la asociación de las especies de Carabidae con la vegetación herbácea; c) analizar la proporción de especies de acuerdo a la cantidad de ambientes que ocupan, su capacidad de dispersión por medio del vuelo y su sinantropía; d) identificar potenciales especies típicas de los distintos ambientes, y e) registrar la presencia de larvas. El estudio se realizó en un agroecosistema de la Laguna Nahuel Rucá (37°37’04’’ S - 57°25’16’’ O). Se seleccionaron distintos ambientes de muestreo: tres ambientes de bosque, tres ambientes abiertos y un ambiente mixto, que fueron muestreados mensualmente mediante trampas "pitfall" a lo largo de un año. Se elaboró un índice para clasificar el grado de modificación antrópica de cada ambiente. Los valores más altos de riqueza se observaron en los ambientes de bosque.

Bininda-Emondsa aInstitut fu¨r Spezielle Zoologie und Evolutionsbiologie, FSU Jena, Germany bMuseo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Madrid, Spain Received 14 October 2005; accepted 17 May 2006 Abstract A supertree for Adephaga was reconstructed based on 43 independent source trees – including cladograms based on Hennigian and numerical cladistic analyses of morphological and molecular data – and on a backbone taxonomy. To overcome problems associated with both the size of the group and the comparative paucity of available information, our analysis was made at the genus level (requiring synonymizing taxa at different levels across the trees) and used Safe Taxonomic Reduction to remove especially poorly known species. The final supertree contained 401 genera, making it the most comprehensive phylogenetic estimate yet published for the group. Interrelationships among the families are well resolved. Gyrinidae constitute the basal sister group, Haliplidae appear as the sister taxon of Geadephaga+ Dytiscoidea, Noteridae are the sister group of the remaining Dytiscoidea, Amphizoidae and Aspidytidae are sister groups, and Hygrobiidae forms a clade with Dytiscidae. Resolution within the species-rich Dytiscidae is generally high, but some relations remain unclear. Trachypachidae are the sister group of Carabidae (including Rhysodidae), in contrast to a proposed sister-group relationship between Trachypachidae and Dytiscoidea. Carabidae are only monophyletic with the inclusion of a non-monophyletic Rhysodidae, but resolution within this megadiverse group is generally low. Non-monophyly of Rhysodidae is extremely unlikely from a morphological point of view, and this group remains the greatest enigma in adephagan systematics.

Biological invasions are usually thought to have a negative impact on native communities. However, data supporting this idea are often based on comparative studies between invaded and non-invaded areas, and are spatially and temporally limited. 2. The present study experimentally assessed the impact of an exotic wasp, Vespula germanica , on the native arthropod community of north-west Patagonia during 3 years in an area of 80 ha. Vespula germanica is an exotic social vespid that invaded north-west Patagonia 20 years ago. It has been suggested that its populations affect native arthropods because of its broad diet and also because Patagonia lacks natural enemies and potential competitors for these wasps. 3. Using wasp-specific toxic baits, V. germanica abundance was reduced in five sites of native woodlands during 3 consecutive years. The abundance, species richness, and composition of arthropods between non-poisoned (control) and poisoned sites was then compared, both before and after the wasps were poisoned. 4. Wasp abundance represented 6% of the total arthropod catches in non-poisoned sites and was reduced, on average, by 50% in the treated areas.

Three subgenera are recognized within the genus; one of them, Cardiophthalmus Curtis, is endemic to the Patagonian Steppe. Together with the members of the genus Cnemalobus Guérin-Ménéville, these beetles are the largest Carabidae of the Patagonian Steppe. New studies in the northern region of Patagonia, the Payunia, reveal the presence of two new species, Baripus (Cardiophthalmus) nevado, new species, and Baripus (Cardiophthalmus) precordillera, new species, restricted to isolated montane habitats. In this paper, we provide morphological descriptions of the new taxa with illustrations of male and female genitalia. We also conducted a phylogenetic analysis including all known species of Baripus. The cladistic analysis showed that B. (C.) mendozensis, B. (C.) nevado and B. (C) precordillera constitutes a monophyletic group of species. These three species are allopatric, but B. (C.) mendozensis and B. (C.) nevado ranges are in close proximity.

However, from the descriptions and figures, neither of these species seem to belong to ]\T oto11c11s, for the pronotum and rnetanoturu lack the character­ istics of that genus, and again ocelli should be present, as in other species of Notoncus.

Here the quantitative relationships between ecology, taxonomy, and morphology of ant workers are explored. The morphospace for worker ants taken from 112 genera and 12 subfamilies of New World ants is described. 2. Principal components analysis was used to characterise a morphospace based on 10 linear measurements of ant workers. Additionally, strongly covarying measures were removed to generate a simplified morphological space that uses three common and ecologically relevant traits: head size, eye size, and appendage length. 3. These morphological traits are then associated with diet and foraging sub- strate. For example, workers in predaceous genera tend to be small, with rela- tively small eyes and limbs; omnivores, while small, have proportionately large eyes and limbs.
