2019 Leatherstocking Council Annual Report LEATHERSTOCKING COUNCIL 2019 ANNUAL REPORT from the council president Creating an Impact in our Community. Let me start by saying “Thank you”. Two words we use so often but honestly mean so much. I want to thank the over 3,000 volunteers that keep Scouting alive in each one of our communities. I also want to thank our donors; without your kind donations we couldn’t support the program that is building the next generation of leaders. Without all of you our program couldn’t continue to function. We’ve had a busy 2019. We’ve done the traditional stuff like Scouting for Food, Matthew E. Dziedzic volunteering our time at parades, completing community projects and earning a few Leatherstocking Council advancements on the way. Things might look a little different now that young ladies are President with us, but we have always been a family program. From my personal experience with my daughter Maria, we’ve had a blast learning so much together. Truly, what this is all about, is finding that family bonding time we all need. I’m proud to let you know we have had one of the largest Eagle classes in recent memory. With 70 graduates in 2019, it was awesome to see most of them at our annual Eagle Recognition Dinner. This council in proud of you and your perseverance during your journey. If you try to understand the economic impact of our Eagles alone, we donated over $148,750 back to our communities. We continue to invest in our program annually. Currently we are trying to fund the Barnes Center at Camp Kingsley. I hope you have already heard of our plan on building a new welcome center at Kingsley. It will be the new home of the Scout Store, Medical Lodge and your sign-in point before heading out on your adventure. We have been blessed by so many community members already that have donated to building this structure. We look forward to sharing more exciting news with you on this project in 2020. Let me close by telling you a story I recently heard from a colleague. He shared, while raising his kids and volunteered his time to be a Den leader. Unfortunately, his career path required a move and they had to leave their current Pack. When he made the announcement to the Den of Bears, one of the children tearfully asked him not to leave. Till this day, that memory of scouting sticks in his mind the most. Sometimes we forget the impact we have on those around us. Those of you who have fond memories of your time in Scouting, please don’t forget to pay that back to the current generation in the program. If you talk to any of our troops or packs, we always need more leaders, committee members and merit badge instructors. We talk about donating time, treasure and talent. Imagine what a few hours of your time could mean to a young man or lady in our program. Sincerely, Matthew E. Dziedzic Council President Leatherstocking Council, BSA Thanks to our volunteers and financial donors, the Boy Scouts of A SCOUT IS America Leatherstocking Council TRUSTWORTHY proudly serves approximately 2,700 Scouts across Delaware, Hamilton, LOYAL Herkimer, Lewis, Madison, Oneida, HELPFUL Otsego and Schoharie counties in Friendly Central New York. • Welcome! New Cub Scout Family
WELCOME! NEW CUB SCOUTA FAMILY INFORMATION FAMILY GUIDE Why Join Cub Scouting? • If you could give only one gift to the young people who are most important in your life, what would it be? No matter what your family situation is, it is within your power to help these children grow into people with a good feeling about themselves and a genuine concern for others. Cub Scouting can assist you in providing this greatest gift of all. • Cub Scout-age children benefit developmentally from belonging to a small group of peers. Your child will be a part of a den, a small group of Cub Scouts in the same grade level and who are of the same gender. Through this sense of belonging, children build self-esteem and learn to get along with others. • As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups that your child joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, personal fitness, and leadership. The values we seek to instill are found in the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Scout Law Scout Oath A Scout is trustworthy, loyal, helpful, On my honor I will do my best to do friendly, courteous, kind, obedient, my duty to God and my country and cheerful, thrifty, brave, clean, to obey the Scout Law; to help other and reverent. people at all times; to keep myself physically strong, mentally awake, and morally straight. We know that kids do not join Cub Scouting for character building. Kids join because it is fun. Your child will learn great lessons, but they will be far too busy having fun to notice.

  • 2020 Leatherstocking Council Annual Report
LEATHERSTOCKING COUNCIL 2020 ANNUAL REPORT from the council president The challenges are what define us. I’d like to start off by saying thank you. Between our volunteers and our donors, you have done so much to help continue our mission. The young men and women of our program thank you as well. 2020 started as most years do, but as you know, by mid-March things changed drastically. Even with COVID, Scouting lived on. We adapted and overcame. We met in our dining rooms or back yards and utilized online meeting programs. But that’s what scouting is about, being prepared for the unexpected. I’m proud of each of you for continuing. Matthew E. Dziedzic Leatherstocking Even during these difficult times, we had some great successes. Thirty seven Scouts achieved Council President their rank of Eagle and 88 Cub Scouts earned their Arrow of Light. Additionally, we met the Barnes Family Challenge for Camp Kingsley. We received 382 gifts and pledges totaling $326,000 to be used to create a new welcome center. Seven local foundations answered our call to support our efforts, including three who supported our mission for the first time. One of our anonymous donors generously increased their normal pledge from $750 to $20,000 so that we could meet our goal and deadline by March 1st. Again, thank you! Sadly this year we lost some loyal supporters, one being Jean Mary Hastie. Her estate donated all the billboards and advertisements and even a sixty-second television commercial that aired 180 times honoring our Council’s Class of 2020 Eagle Scouts.
