Sunday, April 3 @ 7 PM Zellerbach Theatre Part of the African Roots, American Voices series. 15/16 Season 45 ABOUT THE ARTISTS Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s most celebrated sons. He is a singer, songwriter, dancer, anthropologist and musical activist whose infectious crossover music, a vibrant blend of Western pop and African Zulu rhythms, has exploded onto the international scene and broken through all the barriers in his own country. In France, where he enjoys a massive following, he is fondly called Le Zulu Blanc – the white Zulu. Over three decades, Clegg has sold over five million albums of his brand of crossover music worldwide. He has wowed vast audiences with his audacious live shows and won a number of national and international awards for his music and his outspoken views on apartheid, perspectives on migrant workers in South Africa and the general situation in the world today. Clegg’s history is as bold, colorful and dashing as the rainbow country which he has called home for more than 40 years. Clegg was born in Bacup, near Rochdale, England, in 1953, but was brought up in Zimbabwe and South Africa. Between his mother (a cabaret and jazz singer) and his step-father (a crime reporter who took him into the townships at an early age), Clegg was exposed to a broader cultural perspective than that available to his peers.

ABSTRACT This thesis introduces the reader to rock music in Durban from 1963 to 1985, tracing the development of rock in Durban from rock'n'roll to hard core punk. Although the thesis is historically orientated, it also endeavours to show the relationship of rock music in Durban to three central themes, viz: the relationship of rock in Durban to the socio-political realities of apartheid in South Africa; the role of women in local rock, and the identity crisis experienced by white, English-speaking South Africans.

Their music has its roots in Zulu rhythms, melded with EuroAmerican jazz. Formed in 1986, the ensemble has sold more than two million albums in South Africa, including the number one hit, "Asimbononga," and "Scatterlings of Africa," which appeared on the sound track of the movie, "Rain Man." The ensemble's popularity in Europe has led it to appearances in North America, including network television exposure on the Arsenio Hall Show, the Today Show, the Tonight Show, and Saturday Night Live. Clegg has worked with two of the groups musicians, percussionist Dudu Zulu and drummer Derek De Beer, since 1979, when they were members of another very popular South African band, Juluka. Clegg and Savuka (Zulu for "we have arisen") have released two albums, "Third World Child" and "Shadow Man," and have toured extensively, appearing at the famed Montreux Jazz Festival, opening for David Bowie in France, fronting for Earth, Wind and Fire in Germany, and appearing in North America with Steve Winwood. Clegg and Savuka also appeared in the Amnesty International Human Rights' "NOW!" tour, in Abidjan on the Ivory Coast, with Bruce Springsteen, Sting and Tracy Chapman. Michael Lerner of Newsweek says, "Long before Paul Simon ever dreamed of fusing South African music with Western pop on his blockbuster "Graceland" album, Clegg--who was a university lecturer on socio-anthropology in South Africa and who speaks fluent Zulu--was hard at work doing just that.

SRO Artists, Inc. http://www.sroartists.com | [email protected] PHONE: (608) 664.8160 FAX: (608) 664.8161 ARTIST BIO: Johnny Clegg (revised June-2017) p. 1 of 4 Johnny Clegg occupies a peerless position on the global music stage – one that is built on more than four decades of making life- changing, life-affirming and groundbreaking music for hundreds of thousands of fans scattered throughout the world. From the time he began mastering Zulu music and traditional Zulu Inhlangwini dancing as a teenager, to the formation of Johnny and Sipho and then Juluka with Sipho Mchunu in the late 1970s, the creation of Savuka and the past 23 years as a solo artist, Clegg has carved out a music career that places him alongside the world’s most acclaimed artists. While Clegg is quick to acknowledge that the idea of mixing music and cross-cultural experimentation already existed in the sub-culture of Zulu migrant labour in the 1940s and 1950s , his major artistic achievement is as an innovator of truly crossover music. Clegg’s mixing together of English lyrics and Western melodies with Zulu musical structures came a full decade before Paul Simon’s global breakout album, Graceland. When awarded the degree of Doctor of Music honoris causa by the University of KwaZulu-Natal in 2013, Clegg recalled how this crossover music sprung to life. “From 1970 to 1977, Sipho and I played traditional Masikande music. I learnt the rules of composition and the rules of presentation. However, from time to time, I could not help hearing echoes of certain characteristics of Celtic Folk music in some of the Zulu war songs.

  • Talking About Music and Lyrics and the Influence They Can Have on Our Lives and Society in General
Music, a part of our lives Level: A2 Communicative Objectives: Talking about music and lyrics and the influence they can have on our lives and society in general. Vocabulary: Music, Apartheid Documents used: A biography, a song, lyrics and an interview. Johnny Clegg is one of South Africa’s favourite musicians. His music reflects the joys and sorrows of a country struggling against division. Take turns to read pieces of the following biography aloud, and I will explain any terms that are unfamiliar to you. Johnny Clegg, born in Rochdale, England in 1953 was raised in his mother’s native land of Zimbabwe before immigrating to South Africa at the age of nine. At the age of 14, Johnny began to learn to play the guitar. Through his interest he met CHARLIE MZILA, a Zulu flat cleaner who played street music near Clegg’s home. For two years Johnny learned the fundamentals of Zulu music and traditional Zulu INHLANGWINI dancing with Charlie. He was 13 years old when he saw the dancers for the first time. Equipped with his guitar, Johnny accompanied Mzila to all the migrant labour haunts – from hostels to rooftop shebeens. In this difficult and complex political landscape, Johnny managed to navigate a path, which enabled him to enter the hidden world of the Zulu migrant labourers. During this period he developed a reputation as a competent Zulu guitarist in the MASIKANDE (from the Afrikaans “Musikant”) tradition. This reputation reached the ears of SIPHO MCHUNU, a migrant Zulu worker who had come up to Johannesburg in 1969 looking for work.

  • Johnny Clegg, Musician and Philantropist
Johnny Clegg, Musician and Philantropist Johnny Clegg (1953-2019) was a South African musician, popularly called the “White Zulu.” His musical collaborations in the late 20th century made a powerful statement against apartheid, the enforced segregation of black and white people and traditions in South Africa. Have you heard the word apartheid before? Do you know what it means? Apartheid is a former social system in South Africa in which black people and people from other racial groups did not have the same political and economic rights as white people and were forced to live separately from white people. Find the antonym for integration. Segregation Born in England, Clegg moved with his mother to her homeland, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) when he was a small child. There she met and married a South African journalist, and moved to Johannesburg, South Africa. Where was Johnny Clegg born? England What is Rhodesia currently known as? Zimbabwe Clegg’s home environment was both musically and politically liberal; his stepfather was an anti-apartheid crime reporter with an interest in black African culture, and his mother was a cabaret singer. As a young adult, Clegg studied social anthropology, and after receiving a master’s degree, taught at a university for several years. In the 1970s he left his teaching position to focus on musical pursuits. What does the word liberal mean? Not opposed to new ideas or ways of behaving that are not traditional or widely accepted. Find a word that has a similar meaning than calling or profession. Pursuits As an adolescent in Johannesburg, Clegg encountered the underworld of the city's Zulu migrant workers' music and dance.
