  • BOB SEDERGREEN: the INTERVIEW by Adrian Jackson*
BOB SEDERGREEN: THE INTERVIEW by Adrian Jackson* _______________________________________________________ [This interview appeared in the December 1981 edition of Jazz Magazine] ver the last decade, I have had the pleasure of hearing pianist Bob Sedergreen play on many occasions: with vibist Alan Lee, with a succession of bands led O by Brian Brown, as the focal point of the Ted Vining Trio, with Onaje, as the wild card in Peter Gaudion’s Blues Express, providing fairly heroic support to visiting stars Jimmy Witherspoon, Phil Woods, Richie Cole and Milt Jackson, even solo. I have always enjoyed and admired his playing for its unflagging swing and qualities of joy, resourcefulness and commitment, and his determination to take chances at all times in search of inspiration, which he seems to find more frequently than most. He has long impressed me as a jazz musician who often plays ‘above himself’ because he has the courage to do just that. Bob Sedergreen: the sum total of his music is pure Sedergreen… In the last few years, he has continued to increase the scope and depth of his playing, and his confidence in it, to the point where he is obviously one of the best musicians in Australia. We have too few others who can so consistently be so exciting, original, inventive, surprising and enjoyable. __________________________________________________________ *In 1981 when this was published, Adrian Jackson was a freelance writer, who had been jazz critic with the Melbourne Age since 1978. 1 I won’t try to describe his playing. As with any really good jazz artist, his playing is a reflection of his listening and playing experiences, and his own personality.

ANNUAL REPORT 2015 16_A70_TV_Acad_Ad.qxp_Layout 1 7/8/16 11:43 AM Page 1 PROUD MEMBER OF »CBS THE TELEVISION ACADEMY 2 ©2016 CBS Broadcasting Inc. MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN AND CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER AS THE QUANTITY AND QUALITY OF CONTENT HAVE INCREASED in what is widely regarded as television’s second Golden Age, so have employment opportunities for the talented men and women who create that programming. And as our industry, and the content we produce, have become more relevant, so has the relevance of the Television Academy increased as an essential resource for television professionals. In 2015, this was reflected in the steady rise in our membership — surpassing 20,000 for the first time in our history — as well as the expanding slate of Academy-sponsored activities and the heightened attention paid to such high-profile events as the Television Academy Honors and, of course, the Creative Arts Awards and the Emmy Awards. Navigating an industry in the midst of such profound change is both exciting and, at times, a bit daunting. Reimagined models of production and distribution — along with technological innovations and the emergence of new over-the-top platforms — have led to a seemingly endless surge of creativity, and an array of viewing options. As the leading membership organization for television professionals and home to the industry’s most prestigious award, the Academy is committed to remaining at the vanguard of all aspects of television. Toward that end, we are always evaluating our own practices in order to stay ahead of industry changes, and we are proud to guide the conversation for television’s future generations.

  • Performing Othello in South Africa Natasha Distiller
Authentic Protest, Authentic Shakespeare, Authentic Africans: Performing Othello in South Africa Natasha Distiller ugh Quarshie famously declared Othello a play that black actors Hshould avoid: “If a black actor plays Othello does he not risk making racial stereotypes seem legitimate… namely that black men… are over- emotional, excitable and unstable?”1 Ben Okri, referencing the reception of Shakespeare’s tragedy by critics and audiences,2 said that if Othello were not originally a play about race (as indeed it was not in the modern sense of the term), its history has made it one.3 By now, Othello both invokes and confounds modern notions of race and racial difference, speaking powerfully to the long history of misogyny it has facilitated.4 The play also points to the ways in which race and gender are imbricated in one another and co-depend.5 The meaning of Desdemona’s whiteness and femininity depend on each other, as do Othello’s blackness and masculinity. As Celia Daileader has pointed out, Desdemona’s punishment for being an unruly woman is symbolized by and through Othello’s racial identity.6 One might say that Othello both is and is not about race and racial difference, a play that invokes a relation between gender and the range of human cultures, religions, civic belongings, and/or appearances that we now encode as “race.” Whichever ideological frame one chooses to read through (an early modern construction of Moorishness, a postmodern antiracism, a feminist awareness of domestic violence, a combination of these, or any of the other possible lenses one could apply), to understand the play one must recognize the ways it explores the experience of difference as emotionally fraught at best, potentially dangerous at worst.
