However, I take responsibility for any lapses that may still be found in the work. vi ABSTRACT Among the Igbo people of South Eastern Nigeria, the art of conversation is regarded very highly and proverbs are seen as “abubo e ji eri okwu” that is (condiments to speech) or literally defined as “the palm oil and salt with which words are eaten”. Igbo proverbs have aesthetic appeals which have revealed that apart from being the store house of the people‟s wisdom, they appeal to their various senses. The study sets out to examine the common themes and aesthetic devices of Igbo proverbs in order to ascertain the extent to which they affect understanding, meaning and function in communication. As proverbs add sense to discourse, the study portrays that an understanding and effective interpretation of Igbo proverbs depend largely on the knowledge of the different themes in which they are couched and the utilization of the aesthetic devices embedded in them. The study is built on Traditional grammar and Functional grammar. Using Traditional grammar, the study examines the common themes of the proverbs. The theoretical framework for the study is based on the systemic functional linguistic (SFL). Approach to language study proposed by Halliday and Hassan (1985), Butt, Fahey, Spinks, Yallop (1999) and also Halliday and Maitthiessen (2004). The SFL theory is used to analyse the context of culture, context of situation and metafunctional components of the text. These consist of the variables of field, tenor and mode of discourse. These three parameters of context of situation affect our language choices because they reflect the three main uses of language identified by Halliday and Maitthiessen (2004) as the three metafunctions of language – ideational, interpersonal and textual, but the analysis focuses on the first two. The study analysed 40 Igbo proverbs randomly selected from the 200 Igbo proverbs obtained through audio recording and observation of live performances during formal and informal occasions involving Igbo people. Books on Igbo proverbs and interviews with four elderly Igbo men, two elderly women and four youths helped a great deal. The study found that Igbo proverbs are a repository of several aspects of the culture, orature and linguistic habits of the Igbo people. Another finding of the study is that the appreciation of the full functionality of a proverb is a property of the context of use, and the theme of the proverb influences this.     Igala people The Brazilian-designed Volkswagen Brasilia was sold in Nigeria as the Igala. The name of the car was derived from the Yoruba word for antelope "ìgalà" and has no connection with the Igala ethnic group. Igala are an ethnic group of Nigeria. Igala practice a number of different religions, including animism, Christianity, and Islam. The home of the Igala people is situated east of the river Niger and Benue confluence and astride the Niger in Lokoja, Kogi state of Nigeria. The area is approximately between latitude 6°30 and 8°40 north and longitude 6°30 and 7°40 east and covers an area of about 13,665 square kilometers (Oguagha P.A 1981) The Igala population is estimated at two million, they can also be found in Delta, Anambra and Edo States of Nigeria. The Igala language is closely related to the Yoruba and Itsekiri languages. In Igala tradition, infants from some parts of the kingdom, like Ankpa receive three deep horizontal cuts on each side of the face, slightly above the corners of their mouths, as a way of identifying each other. However, this practice is becoming less common. The Igalas are ruled by a father figure called the Attah. The word Attah means 'Father' and the full title of the ruler is 'Attah Igala', meaning, the Father of Igalas (the Igala word for King is Onu). Among the most revered Attahs of the Igala kingdom are Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko and Atta Ameh Oboni. According to oral tradition, Attah Ayegba Oma Idoko offered his most beloved daughter, Inikpi to ensure that the Igalas win a war of liberation from the Jukuns' dominance.

Enang Abstract This Study: Engaging Appropriate Affixation System for English and Anaang: Amorpho-Syntactic Study at Distributional Equivalence for Education and Development in Nigeria Beyond 2020 which is the first in the area, takes a look at all the morphological processes which are involved in affixation; as well as the application of these processes on syntax-related rank scales in order to account appropriately for affixation as a very important aspect of morphology. It also aims at revealing the possible universals of the two languages in the field of word-formation.. The theoretical frameworks used in this study are the three-in –one tool; contrastive analysis (CA), error analysis (EA)and needs analysis (NA) which are identifiable by the researchers to be effectively operational in revealing the linguistic universals between the two languages. The general assumption here, is that the aspect of similarities will facilitate learning the second language, especially if a rule in L1 is identical to a rule in L2 and applied to propagate Educational sensitization that will usher in Development in Nigeria in 2020 and beyond. Such institutions gained legitimacies through royalty. Traditional institutions were and remained the only legitimate authority in most societies of Nigeria. They were revered, respected and obeyed by all. In some societies they held the power of life and death over their subjects and their courts remained the highest court in the land. In reciprocity, the traditional authorities provided the needed security and protection to the peoples. However, this old tradition of kingship faced enormous challenges arising from the growing influence of modern technology which propelled the move for contacts between the indigenous peoples in Nigeria and those branded as “super human”- the Whites. The emergence of the White Colonialist beginning from the 19th Century had ushered in a change that shook the foundation of Royal or Traditional institutions in Nigeria. This paper looks at the historical narratives of interactions between the indigenous peoples and the alien Colonialist that shook the foundation of traditional institutions among the Igala people of Central Nigeriaand sustained even by the post- colonial successive administrations in Nigeria. Introduction Traditional institutions are an aged long institution cherished, respected and carriedwith a sense of responsibilities and royal patronage. In most settlements Africa either at a micro or macro level, people findit a sense of duty to rally round someone who stands for them, be their mouthpiece and possibly defend them as the case may be.

Data for this work was gathered during several field trips undertaken to the four speech communities of Anaang to collect data on Anaang folklore, for the on-going research on the Lower Cross Languages Development Project (LCLDP) sponsored by the Linguistics Department of the University of Uyo, for the documentation and revitalization of the endangered languages in the Cross River Area. A vast number of data on proverbs were recorded during interview with the people on a folk session. From the recordings, data on proverbial ideophones were elicited and used for this work. This paper adopts the theoretical framework of Speech Acts theory for analysis. It has been observed that Anaang proverbial ideophones are rich in the use of style and language, as well as literal and contextual techniques. The contents as well as the contexts are carefully selected to reflect the socio-cultural background of the people. The application of proverbial ideophone is a special skill in speech, and requires a clear knowledge of the socio-cultural background of the people.

The study population covers the household equipment line of Main Market Onitsha in Anambra State, Nigeria, which has shop capacities of over five hundred, which were used to assume the population of the study – out of the 300 questionnaires administered to the directors of the business or the Masters/Mistresses, who were the business owners during the study, 180 were returned, 73 were invalid, so the researcher was left with 107 valid questionnaires to work with . The data collected were tested using frequency tables, percentages, Pearson Product-Moment correlation analysis, and regression analysis .
